Filmmaking on a grand scale, acted to perfection and meticulously drawn. The film isn't so much about what age does to our physicality but what time does to our souls, and while the story can be painful, and sometimes heartbreaking to watch, it is a warm picture about the beauty of mortality and the importance of enjoying what we've got when we've got it. It is becoming ever more clear that David Fincher is one of Hollywood's most promising talents, and his pictures seem to mature in both subject matter and craft with every step. This is a movie to get excited about- it's the kind of sweeping epic that places us somewhere else and makes us excited about the movies again.

Weren't you annoyed with the modern day scenes?

I think it would have been infinitely better if they had kept those to a minimum.

I also watched Bangkok Dangerous over the weekend......but it left such little impact...I almost forgot I watched it.

I'm in awe of John Lithgow right now...what a great performance!

The movie itself was a bit of a letdown thanks to the writeup on the DVD cover being loaded with spoilers, but Lithgow was more than good enough to make up for it.

Seriously, I can't quite see the point of that...the DVD box ruins pretty near the whole damn plot, save for the final twist. Bullshit. It was still a great movie, but I would have enjoyed it a lot had I not known exactly what to expect

That sucks about the spoilers dude. I watched it when it came out without knowing anything about it and it blew me away. A lot of people forget what a great villain Lithgow made... he seems to be forever remembered as the guy from 3rd Rock From The Sun.

**SPOILER**

They were pretty annoying. Besides the opening and when she found out Benjamin was her dad, I didn't see the need.

**END SPOILER**

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
-Extremely fun and entertaining. Funniest thing I've seen in awhile.

Phalanx 01-05-2009 07:46 PM

Lithgow is a good villain, yeah...aside from the two mentioned (never saw raising cain personally), he was also pretty damn good in the Denzel Washington flick "Ricochet"

Elvis_Christ 01-05-2009 08:02 PM

Oh hellz yeh Ricochet was killer. I really need to check that out again its been years.

**Spoilers- kind of**

Ehh, I'm not sure. Maybe. I do like how such a strange tale was so cleanly grounded into reality (via Hurricane Katrina). It is touching, too, to know that a new generation was to carry on the tale after everything was said and done, and to see what Benjamin was able to leave behind.

But I was not impressed with the elderly actress who played Daisy; she had some weird Hepbern thing going on and it was hard to understand her.

Phalanx 01-05-2009 11:43 PM

Hey, maybe we could put spoilers in white guys, I mean I get that you've all put spoiler warnings and that's appreciated, but sometimes when the page loads you can just find yourself looking at the segment announced or otherwise.
S'up to you, just throwing it out there...

I just watched Phantasm 2, it was pretty good...like the first one, which I've seen for the first time relatively recently, atmosphere it does quite well. I thought this one had more balls than the first, bit more reliant upon splatter factor than the psychological but it didn't hurt it any.
I liked it, and at this point, I'm still considering purchase of the box set if the rest are any good (they were made in the 90's, so I know roughly what to expect...)
I do rather like the character of the tall man, his character is similar to Krueger, well, in that he's another supernatural "villain" badguy, mystical background and all...he exudes the same kind've vibe.

Now, for someone who has seen these films...slight spoiler beneath...
So what was Phantasm 1 then,
Was it a psychic "dream" of some kind, to serve as forewarning of things to come? ...or did reality get changed by the tall man?
Do they do this again?

Cube2 and Cube Zero.

Forgettable.

Phalanx 01-06-2009 01:59 AM

I'd agree on cube 2...aside from the slightly interesting time-fracture kind've theme it breifly visited, I didn't like it at all, and the ending of course, just stupid IMO.

Too bad to hear that about zero though, always thought it may've been a step up.

#1 is still among my favourite scifi films though.

neverending 01-06-2009 02:03 AM

I liked Cube- but the original filmmaker's idea was to never reveal what was outside the cube. Cube2 and Zero both reveal that and Zero spells everything out explicitly. It really ruins all the mystery.

In dvd shops here...they have only Cube Zero and this is the only series that I haven't seen any single part so far!:o

Alien Raiders (2008)

http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/1958/ar1za3.jpg

A pretty decent low budget sci-fi thriller.

Body of Lies (2008)

http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/3928/bol1df6.jpg

An ordinary terrorist hunt-spy thriller. Even Traitor was much better & more entertaining than this one. Only the names of the director & the two highly reputed actors should definitely help to grab an audience. Actually I was expecting much more from it.

That was fun in the theatres. Fairly unnerving and scary too!

You can't be serious? Night of the Comet is not scary in the slightest. Nor would it be considered a classic. My boyfriend bought this movie recently and told me how much he loved it when he was a kid. We both watched it and he apologized at the end of the screening. Let's just say it did not live up to both of our expectations...but to each their own...although not a classic either...I've loved the movie Fright Night since I was a kid.

As stated in the forum description, Classic Horror refers to films from the 1960s AND BEFORE.

I understand what a classic movie is. That's why I mentioned "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1944) in my last post. Perhaps you are referring to the post I responded to regarding "Night of the Comet"? Which (of course) is an eighties movie. In this post I acknowledge that it's not a classic. However, I understand your need to reiterate structure and protocol in regards to the forum description. After all it might turn into total chaos and anarchy setting off a series of events that signals the end of the world, right? Ha ha. Indeed.

Elvis_Christ 01-06-2009 03:16 PM

Dollar For The Dead

Dug it especially because of the strong cast. One of the better made for TV flicks out there.

The Mummy returns

It wasn't a very good idea....

Wristcutters: A Love Story

A whimsically profound story that takes place in a purgatory world where suicides live. What would a world be like that was inhabited only by people who had comitted suicide? It's a pretty funny world, actually- even if nobody ever smiles. This is the driest dark comedy I've ever seen, and the three leads who find themselves on a road trip in this world, each for their own reasons, travelling in a rundown car with a black hole in the floor, are perfectly cast. I particularly enjoyed Eugene, a young musician of Russian ancestry who comitted suicide by pouring beer onto his electric guitar and electrocuting himself.

Tom Waits turns up, as does the guy who played Jerry on ER, and the lead of that awful Fearnet movie Catacombs. Turns out she can really act.

One of the best and most varied assembled soundtracks I've come across, with music by Tom Waits, Artie Shaw, Gram Parsons, Screaming Lord Sutch, Del Shannon, Joe Meek and a trio of tunes by Gogol Bordello, a post-modern Balkan cabaret outfit that add immeasurably to the atmosphere.

Watch this if you get a chance.

SO glad that you checked it out and liked it!!! Definitely one of my favorite movies to come out last year. :)

I actually bought the DVD and CD for my boyfriend for his Birthday - I'm pretty psyched about giving them to him (he especially loved the soundtrack).

A very heavy film, and epic to be sure, but I still loved it no matter what people say.

Punisher: war zone. An excellent, but gory comic book film. I was suprised at how gory this movie was actually. I'm glad they made another punisher movie after that crapfest they made in 2004. Man did that movie suck...

alkytrio666 01-07-2009 08:59 PM

Monsters, Inc. (2001)

4/5

An intelligent film which not only succeeds at pure and natural entertainment but also as a commentary on entertainment itself. Just like a certain 1941 Preston Sturges movie, the revelation of the power of laughter (especially in its superiority over terror) is a theme both maturely complex and innocently simplistic. Backed by a superb voice cast and an elite direction team, the film also serves as an incredible milestone in animation; hair waves, eyes water, bodies move rhythmically with breath. And best of all, the film ends on what is probably Pixar's most touching final note- a sweet and gentle sigh of kindness.

_____V_____ 01-07-2009 09:23 PM

The Incredible Hulk.

Revisits can be more entertaining than the initial viewing. In fact, I realised I was more partial towards Hulk than Iron-Man, but Iron-Man was still the better made movie.

Anyway, Hulk did most things right than the Ang Lee version. In Edward Norton we had someone who did the character of Bruce Banner a lot of justice, Tim Roth as Blonsky/Abomination was a real shot-in-the-arm revelation, and the CGI was really jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring.

Cons - Liv Tyler. She didnt fit the bill of Elisabeth Ross for some reason. I actually preferred Jennifer Connelly's version a lot more. Also General Ross. The guy had an empathic look on his face throughout the flick, unlike the real Ross who was a hardened sob who didnt take shit.

Still, this is the sort of Hulk movie everyone would expect. The character is larger than life, and he deserves a larger than life treatment.
