im not a big fan of them either. id say these had some worthwhile qualities:

Chronicle (straight-up cool)
Cloverfield (a big-screen film, fun ride)
VHS (well made, brisk, some shocking, separate vignettes)
Blair Witch (acting & script are standout features)

I havent seen anything else yet that was exceptional.

TED (2012). A lot better than I thought it would be ***1/2

I just finished Ted 2. 5/10.

I didn't mind the remake of REC...that was found footage right?

Of course Cloverfield comes right up the top there. That movie was just very atmospheric, and having half decent actors for the better part helped too.

I recall a fair chunk of "footage" mode as well...I don't know if this is what made the movie good...but yeah, great film right there.

Chronicle was the superpowers one right?
I liked that it actually changed as the guy got better control of the cameras, so we had a bit found footage, a bit "regular" movie.

I seem to like the ones better when it's just segments.
I find the whole found footage bit kind of played out at this point though.

Quarantine was just a bland remake in my opinion. It had some moments but it didn't change anything from the original and the atmosphere wasn't asure scary.

Never saw REC to compare - but yeah that seems to be the general consensus. I just thought it seemed a well made film for a FF.

Yes, Chronicle they gained the telekinesis. I thought it was thoughtful, realistic & fun.

I also agree - I think found footage works well with the vignette/segments, series of shorts.

Paranormal Activity worked well as a found footage too.

I think I might end up liking Quarantine better -- I only saw original Rec. It irked me a bit, but I liked the concept.

CLOWN 2014

This was pretty good. A real estate agent finds an old clown suit in a house he's selling and decides to wear it to his sons birthday party after his wife phones him to tell him the booked clown didn't show up. After the party, he falls asleep still wearing the clown suit and awakens the next day to find that he can't take it off.
Its really nothing to do with the overworked "scary clown" premise and to me was quite unique and horrific.

It sounds interesting where Daddy put on the clown suit and can't get took it off, and he gets it off and it grows back on him. But where it makes him a possessed killer against his will... that premise always irks me in general. http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/ack.gif
