The Great Escape......haven't seen this one in years...what a great movie and great cast. 3 hours just flew by.

The Fall

Tarsem Singh totally redeems himself for the disaster that was The Cell in this epic fairy-tale that hits the perfect balence between childhood innocence, magic realism and the pain of real life. Anyone who loved Pan's Labyrinth or Terry Gilliam's underrated Tideland will dig this visually stunning work of art.

This easily hits my top 10 for 2008

8/10

Noted. Sounds wonderful.

It was more a series of nods (involving the cone of silence, for example, Smart's car, and a few key quotes), but they took liberties with the character's personality (especially 99's). Carell really made it his own.

I Know What you Did Last Summer.

I've been on this teen slasher kick ever since I wrote my essay. (Got a great grade on my first draft, thanks to all your help :D) Something is seriously wrong with me though. I rearely cringe at the worst horror movies but recently I can't even deal with seeing m ovies like Scream and IKWYDLS. I get all paniced and have to look away sometimes. It's so strange. I need a diagnosis.

Love this series.

Fixing The Shadow

Really enjoyed watching this one again. Michael Madsen should make more biker movies because he's great in this one and Hell Ride.

ChronoGrl 11-25-2008 06:57 PM

Just watched The Spiderwick Chronicles.

I generally enjoy the occasional children's movie, especially if there's decent CGI and well-crafted beasties.

That being said, never before have I wanted to shoot a child in the face more than I have while watching this film. I HATE child actors. I HATE pandering scripts for "children's movies." And I HATE interesting stories that should have made fun films.

1.5/5 (that extra .5 is for the cool looking monsters)

joshaube 11-25-2008 08:59 PM

Au Revoir Les Enfants

Watched it for free, legally, on Criterion's new website.
Ah, digital... the future, for sure.

Creepshow.

Still a blast after all these years. And I must admit, I am a fan of the Ed Harris school of dancing.

Crimson Tide.

A taut, suspenseful action drama. Impressive watching two acting giants- Denzel & Hackman going head to head against each other.

needless to say i watch a ton of kids films - so i'm always praying for something i'll actually enjoy.

i didnt mind this one because i did enjoy the visuals, but ill admit that i found the kid weak (and weird looking)

loved those toad monsters though.

with the success of Harry Potter - every single decent selling kids novel is being optioned. we're going to see a lot more of these..

The Toolbox Murders.

The remake. The original didnt leave much of an impression, anyway, and it was good to see a fresh take on it. Tobe Hooper does a competent job, and Angela Bettis impresses again (after May). This is one lady who should get more exposure in such kind of flicks - she looks like almost a natural with her ease. After a kickass beginning, the middle 30 mins get a bit slow, but the finale is quite stunning and more than makes up for it.

All in all, a good little fun flick to get the pulse racing in a winter evening.

Last horror movie was The Strangers. And yes it scared me. I get scared easily nowadays.

Equilibrium.
I really like this film.
The numerous comments I've heard that this "rips off" the matrix piss me off - they can only really attribute this to one scene. One.
It's a far superior film anyways IMO, although the first (and by god only the first) matrix came close.
See it if you like good, solid scifi.

I was really impressed with the strangers. I love it. I saw it in theaters and it scared me pretty good. I keep watching it online. I wanted to buy it today at best buy but I should wait until the price drops a bit before I break the bank.

Vacancy 2: The First Cut (2008/2009)

It's the prequel and more or less same like the original one. Overall, pretty mediocre, nothing new.

"Mirrors" 7/10

Better than the original. More tense, faster pacing and the kills were great.

I also enjoyed the underground scenery. Spooky.

ferretchucker 11-27-2008 10:02 AM

Dead Set.

Technically it was a series of episodes put together to make a feature length. It's basically what would happen if people were in Big Brother, and then the world was overrun by Zombies. It's okay, though a bit dull in places.

I'm only 2 episodes into it, the first one didn't do much for me the second was a lot better.. It's just a rip off of 28 days later though. And as you pointed out technically it is a tv show so your in the wrong thread.

Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten

I really enjoyed this, I loved Joe Strummers music and his ethics, this was a nice photo album and reminiscence.

7/10

Great stuff! Enjoyed it a lot especially the elements of Nightbreed. Easily the best Clive Barker flick since Candyman.

See Two Days. If you like Paul Rudd, it's essential viewing. Hell, I think everyone should check it out anyway...great, really overlooked little movie.

Amazing flick which literally blew me away. Being a late 60s flick, it is rooted in the realistic racism of those times, but Poitier and Steiger make us feel as if we stand there ourselves, facing the fidgety heat which hits us like waves.

Wonderful atmosphere, and a great mystery whodunnit to boot. Highly recommended to everyone who loves atmospheric flicks - Fortunato, NE, Rod, Alky, Return, Urge, Newb, Hellfire, Chrono, etc. All of you need to see this one.

Seen it, love it...keep forgetting to buy it. Really have to watch it again.

----------

Ok, so I've been absent for a bit - my monitor conked out on me and works been too busy for me to sneak online. Here's what I've watched in the meantime, though I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple:

The Duchess

A very good script and fantastic performances, but the bland direction kind of brings it down a few notches. Still, this is the best work I've seen from Knightley - between this and Atonement, I think she's easily one of the best actresses of her generation. Ralph Fiennes is also at the top of his game...a must-see for fans of either of the stars, but otherwise it's nothing to write home about.

Cube

2nd viewing...love this movie. Put the any of Saw movies to shame (#2 obviously took a cue from this one) - smart, snappy script, brilliant set design, and a great ending. The acting could use some work and some CGI effects are a bit rough, but otherwise it's one of the best sci-fi/horror flicks of the decade.

Nightmare on Elm Street

Been a long while since I watched this...even though a string of lame sequels kind of dilute it in the memory, this really is a classic. Too bad Craven didn't stay this innovative...

Friday the 13th

Still pretty good, but multiple viewing are starting to kill it for me. Doesn't hold up nearly as well as Part 3 - still very good though. As far as slashers go, the atmosphere is fantastic.

Watched it with a buddy of mine who'd never seen an F13 movie...needless to say, the real killer came as quite a surprise to him, considering he went in expecting the hockey mask and machete.

Eraserhead

The definition of a masterpiece. Go read Alky's blurb on it for the Underrrated Top 100 list - sums it up PERFECTLY.

Boogeyman 2

Yes, I watched it...I was in the mood for a really bad horror flick, and when I saw this at the store it seemed to fit the bill, seeing as the first is one of the most god-awful pieces of dreck I've EVER seen. And you know what? I was kind of let down. It wasn't really that bad. I'd never go so far as to recommend it, but it's just as good as any other modern day slasher. The characters are cliched and I saw the ending coming in the first 2 minutes, but it's got some decent kills. It's certainly not a good movie, but it's not even in the same league of awfulness as the first one.

Dr. No

Finally got around to watching me some Bond - other than Thunderball when I was around 7, I'd never seen a Bond movie. Throughly enjoyed this one, I'll be watching more in the near future for sure.

...I think that's it.

Ilsa She Wolf the SS - Funny and twisted naziploitation flick. The gore and acting were so fake I had to laugh. Overall decent movie.
5.5/10

Changeling - It was much better than I had hoped for. Angelina Jolie was very convincing in her role. Good drama, acting, character development and an effective supporting cast 7.75/10.

Grindhouse - One of the funnest movie experiences I've had in a while. Both movies were awesome in their own way. 9/10 just because it doesn't get much better for this type of film.
