Yes Alky, I finally got around to watching it - and what a movie it is! I'm at a loss for words, really...fantastic film.

"Ya' Ever Pick Your Feet in Poughkeepsie?"

Glad to hear it! It's a good one.

So...got any more recommendations to make me feel bad about not having seen?

I mean, now that I've got around to Clockwork Orange, Raging Bull AND French Connection, you're running out of ammo :p

Painfulldeath 11-10-2008 07:33 PM

The Prestige: Not a big fan of magic whatsoever. Saying that, this movie was definitely quality stuff. 8.5/10.

Check and double-check.

Chinatown is a favourite for sure...been way too long since I've watched it though.

Taxi Driver was actually a bit of a let-down...I think my expectations were just too high. I really need to give it another go.

Keep trying

Never Mind.

If Taxi Driver was a let down, I got nothing to recommend to you.

I never said it wasn't good, just not as good as I had expected - at least I'm willing to give it another shot, right? :)

Definitely give it another try. Seriously.
Try watching it alone, late at night in a dark room. Don't watch anything else on that day.

Try it again and let us know.

Santa Sangre (1989)
I don't think this one could ever get old; if nothing else, on spectacle alone.
I showed it to a couple of friends that had never seen it before. Needless to say they were amazed.

Here are a couple bonafied must-sees off the top of my head.

-Contempt (Le Mepris)

-Seven Samurai

-The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise

-Sunrise

-Apocalypse Now

-City Lights

...and, after dropping by the Villians tournament...

-The Third Man

I was going to comment on this, but I see you beat me to it

The book and the first movie barely resemble each other at all...The second movie isn't a continuation of the first, it's more like an attempt to get closer to the book...I didn't watch the third one, but I think they finally got it right by the fourth (Reborn)

Iron Man - Never really got into the comic, so I wasn't expecting much from this one. Very impressive and surprisingly well done. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his usual role and shines as he always does. Everyone else could easily be replaced by a different actor. All in all, a fun flick.

newb 11-11-2008 07:17 AM

Frontier[s] ...who would have thought to look to France for the next great wave of horror? Kick ass movie from start to finish. Nothing really new but very well executed.

Hellraiser---holds up pretty good...practical effects work much better than the special effects.

Jeff Bridges looks like grampy from the old Betty Boop cartoons - with that bald head and big old beard.

google betty boop - grampy and you'll get a laugh

Mongol
Beautiful photography, fantastic costumes and awesome sweeping vistas - I mean these panoramic views of the Steppe and surrounding areas rival any John Ford western shot - tell about the youth of the man who would become Genghis Kahn. Everything is so lush that you almost forget that the film is leaving the STORY out of this story.

Played out as an odd love story, the rise of young slave Temudgin to the great Kahn skips most of the details of his actual rise to power... We see his enslavement and his escape(s), we see his rather awesome fighting skills and how his personality won over the hearts of several various nomadic tribesmen, but we never see his real progression - the one thing that I wanted most out of the film. So if you're looking for an awesomely shot sweeping historical epic, you could do a lot worse. I still recommend it, but only to those who dig subtitles and being transported to an utterly foriegn landscape. Really likeable, but unfulfilling.

6.9/10

LOL

I have a tape with Betty Boop on it that I used to watch all the time as a kid, and I didn't even make the connection. Nice one.

I realize I haven't watched a movie in such a long time. If it counts, I have watched the first 20 minutes of Let the Right One In three times now. Hopefully I will actually get around to it tonight.

You have to watch it in one sitting, from start to finish.

Wonderful, wonderful movie. One of the best in recent times.

I had absolutely no intention of doing otherwise. Everything I've seen and heard about it has been great, but every time I sit down to watch it we get company.

Yeah..they are getting better & better specially with the gore & violence. I liked that movie too.

Last seen:

American Psycho 2 (2002)

I gave it a watch for the first & last time just for curiosity:o . I think it could be at least simply a bad fun flick if they didn't put the Patrick Bateman part on it and used a different & stupid title like I want to be a FBI Agent or whatever. But they did whatever worse they could do and made it an unbearable worst sequel of all time.

American Psycho (2000)

2nd viewing after quite a long time and I'm amazed again. One of my most lovable films of all time.

Burn After Reading : Very intelligent and funny movie from the Cohen brothers. It's an all-star cast and the film delivers in terms of entertainment and originality.
8.5/10

The Girl Next Door: Truly disturbing. I thought that it was going to be a piece of cake judging by the slow pace of the 1st half hour. I was wrong. Some of the scenes really aren't for the weak stomached. Mediocre acting does take some of the value away. 6.5/10

The_Return 11-11-2008 03:24 PM

The Big Lebowski

Hahahaha...I had some doubts going into it, but this was a really fun little movie. Gets a lot of mixed opinions, but I say it fully deserves it's cult classic status. Enjoyed this a lot.

I just finished watching that as well, and I found An American Crime much more difficult to watch.

Le Samourai (1967)

Superb filmmaking. It's so refreshing to see a crime movie which is subtle and quiet- completely unaware of itself apart from its minimalistic human qualities.

Good. I was looking for some feedback on whether I should bother watching that one. It wasn't so much what I actually saw in this movie, I just felt really bad for that girl.

Last watched Traitor: Pretty good espionage flick. The acting and plot were on-point. The character development was a little less stellar. Not superb but I definitely recommend it if you're a fan of the genre. 7.5/10

Oh! Great movie. Delon's performance is perfect.

Manchurian Candidate. (The real one)

Still a gripping, terrifying political thriller. Sinatra & Harvey are amazing, as is Angela Lansbury.

Pretty good entertainer. Obviously the CGI again emerged as the real hero, but Del Toro's eye for masterful cinematography and artwork makes this a real winner. Technically, 5 stars.

Had a blast checking out all the extra features on the bonus discs. Del Toro has given some amazing commentary, plus the documentaries rock.

Last watched - Reign of Fire.

Paul the Monk 11-12-2008 07:21 AM

I watched Saw V last night. It wasn't anything great but didn't suck either. Some of the kills were good again but it's obvious the series is losing steam. They have to do some serious rethinking if they are going to continue with these.

Roderick Usher 11-12-2008 08:27 AM

Repo: The Genetic Opera

Musicals are tricky. Even the best ones have flaws and very few are capable of changing the mind of those who simply can't stand musicals. I happen to like them. I've toured the country in several musical productions, so that plus my undying (or is it undead?) love of horror made me a prime candidate to really enjoy Repo.

I didn't.

To put it bluntly...The entire film is a colosal failure. The songs are tuneless and forgettable, the actors (with the exception of Anthony Head and Sarah Brightman) have no business doing musicals - they lacked voices and looked uncomfortable singing, the cinematography is off-putting, comic book-style panels place waaaaaay too much expository text on the screen (lazy writing) and the cardinal sin...

None of our protagonists are victims of the Repo Man! The villian only slashes nameless characters, so there is no impact to the gore and not a hint of tension. The key to drama is to have a protagonist and an antagonist in direct opposition to each other. This film give you no one to root for or even care about.

And the lyrics? Laughable. And I mean that literally. The half-dozen or so of us in the otherwise empty theater laughed out loud repeatedly at the ridiculous of the words clunking out of the actors' mouths.

I really wanted to like this and typically don't like to post negative reviews, but this one is a film to avoid.

I was conflicted about Sweeny Todd last year. I thought it was a wonderfully gorey effort with a great, gothic vibe but wasn't much a fan of the music. Repo made me long for Sonheim.

On the positive side, the costumes and set designs were really cool and there were a lot of skanky goth chicks wearing very little - which I always enjoy. Anthony Head really goes for it. His scenes are the very best stuff in the film.

4/10

Last night I watched Fortress.

Today I need to finish The Haunted Strangler.

Posher778 11-12-2008 10:05 AM

9 to 5- 6.5/10 Oddly enough, that was a pretty damn outrageous movie.

The Brady Bunch Movie- 7/10 I think this movie is so underrated.

TCM: The Beginning- 8/10 I think this is the best of the TCM films. It's actually really tense I think. The gore is fantastic and all but one of the kills are intensely gory.

Geddy 11-12-2008 10:08 AM

Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke - 8/10.

One of the funnies flicks I've seen in a little while. The acid scene was awesome.

illdojo 11-12-2008 10:18 AM

Return To Sleepaway Camp - 4/10
I'm a fan of the 1st one and it has the same director, so I just had to see it. Cheesy as fuck, but I knew it would be.

Posher778 11-12-2008 12:51 PM

The Strangers- 7/10

Slow at first, but still reignites the modern slasher.
