Incredibly dark-humored, flitteringly surreal, and at its core, a fiery and frightening film.
Certainly recommended, and available on Hulu Plus.

I'll have to check this one out-looks good :)

The Flesh and The Fiends (1959) Horror about "Burke and Hare" in 19th century Edinburgh. Two very strong performances from Peter Cushing as Doctor Knox and Donald Pleasance as one of the "fiends". I was very surprised at how this developed and it was very effective at portraying the harshness of the time through sharp dialogue as well as greatly evocative sets of the era.

"Dracula" (1931)
-Bela Lugosi

Plot: The vampire king leaves Transylvania for England and begins to suck around.

Phantoms Review: A true film classic. While it might be slow by modern standards, this is the Dracula film that all others are judged by. Lugosi gives a mesmerizing performance as the count and Dwight Frye is brilliant as Reinfield.Creepy and atmospheric. One of my all time favorites.

Giganticface 01-31-2013 06:37 PM

I watched The Birds (1963) this week. I remember loving this movie as a kid. Possibly my first horror movie ever.

Fearonsarms 02-01-2013 02:03 PM

Dungeon Of Harrow (1964) Very strange little horror this, the performances are a bit stilted but has some very enjoyable trippy moments which make it worth checking out. There is some entertainment value to be had in watching the actors stumble through the thing.

You can watch it here but for a better quality print you need to get the Sinister Cinema 2010 DVD though unfortunately that version is also missing a nude scene:-

realdealblues 02-11-2013 09:37 AM

Re-watched The Raven (1935) again the other day.

I never get tired of this Karloff & Lugosi classic. Lugosi is so great. Same with The Black Cat (1934).

Outside of the actual "Monster Movies" from the 1930's (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, etc.) Those two films are my absolute favorites.

13 Ghost (1960)
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pu...hosts_8749.jpg
I seen re-make of this movie, a number of times. Which I really love, I did find some of those ghost really scary with those make up effect and there were some decent gore in that movie. , I do like the remake a lot better then this.

I did not like this movie at all, I found the whole movie very boring and I didn't find anything scary at all or even creepy.

The ghost scenes do seem a little out dated now and I didn't really like that little twist, if you can call that, it's wasn't much of a twist,

I don't it was really needed for this kinda of movie

There were one or two scenes that liked but nothing really remember able

I going to give this movie 4 out of 10

The Innocents (1961)
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...k-qX4MJ8cBG0Vw
I loved how this movie tries to creepy out even before the movie as started as the start of the movie, you get the Really Creepy Kids voice.

That is one hell of the way to the start a movie like this, I creepy factor dose not stop there at all.

As the movie keeps going you may thing that Kids how doing something as do act a little stange in some scenes.

I love this very dark settling movie, there are some very creepy scenes in this movie, the laughing near end of the movie was very creepy.

I loved the ending of this movie, I clad that is one reason this might never see a remake, I can't see that do that ending now-er days

The acting was outstanding from the whole cast 10 out of 10

The Haunting (1963)
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...kDaxiG5yj1eS-E
I have seen once before, When I wasn't to keen on Black and White movies in my teens years, no that I am Older, Wider  , I have got used to this Black and white movies.

It's not was one of the scariest movies I have seen but that dose not I didn't like It.

I really enjoyed this movie and some really good moment in this movie and sounds effect were really good for the time.

I really liked scenes of breathing door it was very strange in a good way the

acting the movie was really good as well.

I really enjoyed how the plot came to end, I kinda of knew that going to happen.

7/8 out of 10

Carnival Of Souls (1962)
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...PCs2OWYjwT8rwk
What to make of this movie, it's started of with some drag race, which drives girls of the road in the lake.

Then soon one of them have survived and soon strange think start happing and see start to she thing.

Wow, This movie very bizarre. there some very good creepy moment, one or two scene did creepy out a little.

The plot can be very confusing at times, that may annoy some people I think,

I kinda of knew what the twist was as the movie went one.

I felt there were some plot holes left unanswered in this movie, which did annoy me a little.

I don't if I miss something, Maybe I think too much about the twist in the movie

Outstanding acting from the whole cast

I going give this movie 7 out of 10
8 out 10

"Posse From Hell" (1961)
-Audie Murphy

Plot:
Banner Cole is professional gunfighter who is deputized by the dyeing town marshal,he forms a small posse to go after 4 death cell escapees who killed the Marshall , robbed the bank, and kidnapped a woman.

Phantom's Review: Solid , well made western adventure. While the plot is pretty standard, the action is terrific, the actors all do a great job and it leads to an exciting conclusion. One of Audie Murphy's best westerns. Plenty of recognizable character actors appear in this film (Royal Dano, John Saxon, Lee Van Cleef, Vic Morrow, Rudolfo Acosta) This is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon.

I just rewatched The Dunwich Horror. Haven't seen it in decades. I have to say, it's a better movie than I remember, and a more faithful Lovecraftian adaptation than anything else up to that time. I found the neon psychedelic effects quite appropriate for portraying the cosmic forces Lovecraft depicted.

Plus, how cute was the young Dean Stockwell with his curly hair and moustache?

Though there aren't many versions but still like to ask...which version? I'm guessing this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065669/

Oooops... guess I need to move this.

roshiq 03-09-2013 10:17 AM

^^lol, don't bother. I guess it was made in 69 but released in early 1970. :D

An ultimate film-noir. Heard lots of good stuffs about it before but finally saw it last night. I used to be a sucker of this James Hadley Chase sort of stories about treacherous woman manipulating a guy for her own ends. But besides the plot & watching Billy Wilder's cinematic magic in every frame, this one become an absolute treat for Edgar Robinson's top-notch performance as Barton Keys "& the little man inside him"...what a great actor he was!! Wow!!

A pretty weird, Italian psychological thriller staring Franco Nero & stunning Vanessa Redgrave. From the very odd opening sequence, I'm not sure whether I didn't get it right or the plot was at times quite disjointed, full of unanswered questions and finally manages a bizarre ending that somewhat tells the viewer to think about the whole thing in a different perspective but as a whole I failed to enjoyed it thoroughly.

Though the premise (Girls boarding school) was similar to The House that Screamed (1969) but while that Spanish classic was more like a atmospheric Giallo feature, this Mexican gem comes with a beautifully plotted, atmospheric vengeful ghost story and that's just as good as any Gothic classics of great 60s & 70s era.

good fun....on netflix instant

roshiq 03-23-2013 12:09 AM

Quite different than conventional Giallo flicks (as it reveals the killer's identity at a earlier phase of the film). This is a strange, sad story about a police detective (John Mills) who is torn between his duty to capture the criminals behind the series of murders connected with a drug syndicate and his obsessive suspicion that his beautiful wife...who also has a background in the criminal world(!) (Luciana Paluzzi--the Thunderball Bond Girl!) is sleeping around with some other guy(s)!

For its bit of Hitchcockian atmosphere & character driven approach, I found this Veil on Lisa pretty entertaining.

Mr. Sardonicus (1961)

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...pse0bf3d7c.jpg

I have seen very few of his films, I guess but Guy Rolfe...who wonderfully played the title character had the right talent & quite a charismatic look to appear on western as well as horror films. The lovely Audrey Dalton always had my full attention whenever this true beauty was on the screen. Oscar Homolka was also so good that he kinda reminded me of Lugosi as the sinister assistant "Krull". Overall, beautiful story! I think that added psychological analytical part just lifted this movie into different level & made it different than seemingly feel like a 30's Universal-monster film.

Paranoiac (1963)

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...psad46fbe5.jpg

The secrets of Ashby 'psycho' family! There's something in Oliver Reed's talent as an actor that whenever I see a Oliver Reed movie, I can care less for the story or other things. As I said before, it's always a great treat to watch him on the screen.

Definitely with you on this. Sardonicus is a sadly overlooked film in Castle's body of work.

Straker 03-26-2013 07:31 AM

As much as I love the Castle gimmicks, including the punishment poll, I gotta be honest and say the more I think about that film, the more I think it didn't need the gimmick. Such a dark, gothic tale that it just should've left out the punishment poll and let the story flow naturally to its conclusion.

EDIT: That said, Sardonicus crept into my 60s top 20 list.

"Is 'that' what I was afraid of?"-- Byron Orlok/Boris Karloff

This late 60s near forgotten classic not only depicts a struggle between the old and new visions of a rapidly growing movie industry or a particular genre film making through an aging horror movie icon but also remarkably portrays events of a mass shooting (on a freeway & in a drive-in theater)...an issue that's still relevant today, a darker or the most agonizing side of America's gun culture, a real-life horror that's been tormenting a nation decade after decade. And hence the film becomes a testament of a changing time & sufferings that's still very much alive today. It progresses with 2 parallel plots that eventually intersect at the conclusion where we witness an amazing-symbolic confrontation between the icons of our favorite horror fantasy & unbearable gruesome reality. Overall, this is not only a significant film of late 60s but still very much appealing for modern audience also.

A big thanks goes to NE for his sincere motivation behind watching this film.

You must be having fun, Roshiq!

Though, to be honest, The Haunted Palace isn't really a Poe adaptation. It's from a Lovecraft story. The only Poe is the few lines Price recites at the end.

Not a horror film, but I recently saw The Criminal Code, a 1931 prison film about a young man who gets sent to jail for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Something seemed familiar about the guy who played the young man's cell mate, and when he spoke, his voice gave it away. The Criminal Code was one of 14 films Bpris Karloff appeared in, in 1931 alone, before he played the Creature and rocketed to stardom as the King of Horror.

X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963)

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps63a993c8.jpg

"My friend, I'm closing in on the gods"

It's always a great treat to watch Don Rickles on any movie but the magic here comes along from none other than the director B-Horror king Roger Corman who was alone capable of doing such thoughtful & engrossing low budget sci-fi classic with such a seemingly cheesy title! Loved it! And one of the best performances of Ray Milland also, IMO.

Yeah..I should have seen it long time ago! Wow! What a cast and a superb follow up to James Whale's genre-defining 2 consecutive masterpieces! It's really become very rare to see such a great cast (Karloff-Lugosi-Rathbone!) wonderfully working together in a 3rd installment for a horror franchise. Lionel Atwill was also great in the role of Inspector Krogh with 'an arm torn out by the roots'! Along with its very smartly written script & direction the one other thing that I loved about this movie was its simple but very atmospheric, dark set design for Baron's old castle.

This very first "3rd entry" is not just another forced or potentially money making sequel for a horror movie series; I like to add it as one of the all time best in the genre that I have seen so far. A true Universal masterpiece.

I loved that scene also. I'm a devoted western fan and it was nice to see Franco Nero "pass the torch" to Jamie Foxx.
Speaking of westerns, here's my latest film:

"Six Black Horses" (1962)
-Audie Murphey, Dan Duryea

Plot: Audiemurphey.com

Saved from being hanged as a horse thief by Frank Jesse, (Dan Duryea), Ben Lane (Audie) and Frank meet up with Kelly (Joan O'Brien) who pays them to take her to a little town to be with her husband. In reality, Kelly is setting Frank up and wants to kill him because he killed her husband in a shootout. Encounters with Indians makes Frank decide he doesn't want to go further.(SPOILERS) Eventually, it comes to a showdown between Ben and Frank and Frank is killed.

Phantom's Review: Enjoyable, little "B" movie. Beautifully filmed, good acting and plenty of action. The plot is predictable, but not bad. Murphey is fine as his usual heroic self and Duryea seems a little more calm in this role than he has in others,
An entertaining Saturday afternoon film.
