"Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" 3/10

I was bored to tears throughout this movie. Even Steve Carell was dull as hell. And I didn't even get to see the end of the world. I FEEL CHEATED!!! ::mad::

Damn Heathen 09-06-2014 10:14 AM

Demon Wind -- 6.5/10; This '90 flick features terrible acting, terrible dialogue, and a terrible sound design, but when it tries its best to channel the spirit of The Evil Dead, it is not without success. The director manages to maintain a nice spooky atmosphere in the rural setting (i.e. he doesn't resort to the standard perpetual close-up that plagues many a low-budgeter). I found its mustard-oozing, cop-feeling demons lovably vile, and give kudos to the production team for making a fair attempt at showing on the screen the demon that graces the movie poster.

This amazing horror-fantasy offering from Russia is not for the visually sensitive, as its director has one foot in the S. Raimi style and another in that of P. Jackson. I was unfamiliar with the folklore that inspired this spectacle, but suffice to say, my new acquaintance with it lends little thematic value to what I witnessed. There is plenty of obvious (and superfluous) symbolism of religion and classism. Check this out (ignore the user-added music):

You should watch the original, amazing for its time.

I saw it a couple days ago. The final act is brilliant; the rest, not so much.

The Frozen Ground -- 2.5/10; Another crime drama inspired by true events that was more uninspired than the average tv crime drama. C'mon, Cusack, pick some better scripts.

The Guest (2014)

http://s3.postimg.org/kxzz7pilv/guest.jpg

Probably my own fault for looking forward to this one. The posh english sap from Downton Abbey plays a returning Vet in this thriller from the guy who made You're Next. It's enjoyable enough though totally over done, queue chilling music as the anti-hero stares menacingly and the 'reveal' is half explained and half baked. I think I needed another 2 cans of cider to totally enjoy this one.

9/10

This was a direct-to-DVD film, but this should have gotten at least a limited release. The movie was incredibly suspenseful, intense, simple, and taut. I really liked the relationship between the brother and sister (that really made the movie so much better to me), and the twist ending was definitely a surprise. This is one of the best thrillers that has come out in the last few years. I highly recommend it.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps67156253.jpg

Surely a good improvement than the first one (which was just another home invasion flick) as this time it starts off with the chaos in the streets & focuses more about the 'Purge'. Though I was guessing the 3rd installment would be an all break-out revolution and the end of the Purge era but the Wiki says the producers are interested for a 'Prequel'...which will focus on the Revolutionaries and the very first purge.

Tales From The Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (1996)

Not big on comedy-horror but this was better than expected, if you can stand Dennis Miller. Recommended for vampire fans looking for a light-hearted spin on the genre...

Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)

Thumb resize.

In the 16th century, the ruthless and insane Don Lope de Aguirre leads a Spanish expedition in search of El Dorado.

One of those movies where not that much happens and it's more about the mood and the atmoshere. But well done.
Partially based on facts. The style of the movie influenced Apocalypse Now later on.

Some small bits with animal abuse though.
Nothing vicious or anything but still had me frowning a bit.

"Nymphomaniac vol. 2" 4/10

Pretty much the same as Vol. 1. Same boring story with the same two boring people having the same boring artificial conversations. No wonder Trier had to add 2 hours of porn in his directors cut, which this wasn't.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...psb3498fc9.jpg

"The Pact 2" 5/10

A very unnecessary sequel. Only interesting actor/character was Patrick Fischler as a weird FBI agent (or was he?).

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps260bdfea.jpg

"Kristy" 6/10

Story: "When a college girl who is alone on campus over the Thanksgiving break is targeted by a group of outcasts, she must conquer her deepest fears to outwit them and fight back."

This movie had potential to be a very enjoyable cats n' mouse horror flick. If only the crazy cult had consisted of 15 members instead of only 5, and "Kristy" hadn't waited untill the last 15 minutes of the movie to fight back.

What we end up getting is kind of a You're Next rip-off.

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. don't know why it's being hated on that much. Decent gore and best fun i've had in ages. Would recommend it to all, and i usually hate horror comedies. Watch the vapid bimbos and douche jocks die the horrible deaths they all deserve!!!

This was pretty good, but you're right-not much action. Seemed there was more action making it!

Beowulf -- 6.5/10; The action scenes were well constructed, but the unevenness of the animation quickly became a distraction.

It's odd that I find Dennis Miller generally annoying yet find his seeming self-parody hilarious. He was made for cheesy movies like Bordello. When the movie was released to theaters and he was doing the promotional rounds, he dismissed the film as a "tit flick" and discredited the horror genre.

I remember watching this years ago for the women in it. I don't remember the movie being good or scary at all.

See No Evil -

Seeing WWE/WWF at the opening should have made me stop watching. Why is a wrestling company making movies? I guess they are in the entertainment business. But still it doesn't make much sense to me. Unless wrestling these days is blatantly fake and for entertainment. Back in the 80s I always assumed it was as real as boxing.

Anyway, I thought I would watch it because a sequel is coming with both Katharine Isabelle and Danielle Harris. Plus the sequel is directed by the Soska sisters and even though I still haven't seen any of their movies they seem to have a bunch of horror fans.

Rachael Taylor is in See No Evil too so I thought why not put up with it. But it's bad. It's the kind of movie that you can tell people just looked at other horror movies and decided to make their own version that lacks originality. Even down to the twist and horror villain. And worse, they didn't understand why some horror movies are good and others bad. They even didn't get why many don't like the Friday the 13th movies. Because of the unlikeable teenagers. As in See No Evil the characters that go to this condemned hotel are all convicted felons. You don't care about any of these characters. Some even disappear for a while and you completely forget about them only to realize that they sadly aren't dead yet.

Usually when a movie is bad or out of curiosity I check out the director. I assumed this was a younger director that just threw stuff up on screen under the name of "Gregory Dark" for this movie. Turns out it's an older guy who's made a bunch of porn movies. See No Evil doesn't even have a good sex scene either. Only some make out scene that I almost forgot about. I had to think about the movie to remember it for this review.

So pass on this. I'll still watch the sequel because of those involved. But this original movie sucks and doesn't really deserve a sequel.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

0/10

It's not cheesy enough to be so bad it's good, but it's not serious enough to be at least an entertaining action-fantasy flick. It's a really generic and boring "this is how the story REALLY is!" kind of movie. Should have been made-for-TV.

THE GREEN MARKER SCARE 2012

A young girl who fancies herself a bit of a Nancy Drew, uncovers a horrible town secret after her father passes away.

What held me enchanted was the fact that the whole film was animated using children's drawings and the sole colour used was green.

Don't be mislead...this is not a film for children.

In Fear

5/10

This was so disappointing! It had great acting and cinematography, some of the best I've ever seen, and the first 30 minutes are very suspenseful and creepy. It reminded me of The Blair Witch Project, making disorientation and being lost create the scares. But as the movie wears on, it becomes more boring, silly, and predictable, and the movie just... ends. No resolution at all. It had loads of potential... just if they kept that scare-factor from the first act, it would have been a great film! Sadly, it's just a mediocre and hugely disappointing little thriller.

That reminds me: I must watch the unrated version. It's hard to believe the theatrical version is rated R.

Von Trier movies always require a maximum amount of patience, but I agree, this one bored me to tears. At least Vol. 1 was somewhat engaging. However, I thought the one-two punch feel-bad ending had some impact.
