Yup, Joe Hill is Stephen Kings son. I believe he got a publishing deal before he revealed the fact, because he didn't want to just be "Stephen Kings son"

He's awesome too. In my opinion, his dad tends to shy away from being graphic, focusing more on suspense. Joe Hill tends to take the entrails and rub your nose in them.

Weird, just weird. I would pick The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Cujo, The Tommyknockers, Lisey's Story, Rose Madder, or Firestarter as his weakest but Gerald's Game is probably in my top ten.

I've only read Heart-shaped Box but I was impressed.

Curiosity led me to list my favorites/least favorites of Mr. King to see how everyone else felt about his works.

Favorites: IT, Pet Semetary, The Shining, The Stand, Salem's Lot, Night Shift, The Dark Tower series, Different Seasons, The Talisman, Black House, Skeleton Crew, From A Buick 8, Gerald's Game, Misery, Four Past Midnight, Insomnia, The Green Mile, Bag of Bones, Dreamcatcher, Cell, Duma Key, and Full Dark No Stars.

Middle of the Road: Carrie, The Dead Zone, Cycle of the Werewolf, Thinner, Blaze, The Dark Half, The Regulators, Needful Things, Desperation, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Christine, Hearts in Atlantis, Everything's Eventual, Just After Sunset, and The Bachman Books.

Weakest: Firestarter, Cujo, The Tommyknockers, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Delores Claiborne, Rose Madder, Lisey's Story, The Colorado Kid.

TBR pile: Eyes of the Dragon, Under the Dome, Blockade Billy, 11/22/63, Danse Macabre, On Writing, The Wind Through the Keyhole, Doctor Sleep.

I read quite a bit of King in my teens but I have since then read tons of other authors, and yes their are authors out there with just as much to offer as King (Blackwood, Barker, Simmons, Machen, etc.), and a few that surpass him in greatness, but in my opinion only a few that really are greater than King (Poe, Lovecraft). King is the author I always fall back to because he introduced me to horror and weird fiction, I suppose he is like comfort food to me. Their are some authors I haven't got around to reading yet (Ligotti, Le Fanu, Hope Hodgson) and who knows maybe they will be one of the few, I will have to see about that.;)

wizard of gore 04-11-2012 02:21 AM

well thats kind of what i meant ,s.k i allways fall back on coz yeah he kinda introduced me to horror fiction novels, him and maybe dean koonts.but i find they do relate to a wide audience.people not even into horror might enjoy a s.k book(like my girlfriend).but for the true gore fan theres plenty of authors to fullfill there needs with a more graphic nature in there writing.

yeah, absolutely. I don't like to read the same author twice in a row unless it is a series and sometimes even then I have to break up the monotony.

Has anyone read David Wellington? His vampire series starting with 13 Bullets was amazing in about every way. And not a stereotypical vampire story at all.

no,getting a bit over vampires, just read justin cronins the passage ,have you read that?about vampires but very original

TimMiller2011 04-11-2012 11:33 AM

I havne't, I will check it out though. In Wellingtons, the vampires there, all their teeth are sharp, they look like demons and they rip people's limbs off and suck blood from the stumps. Its pretty intense.

Joe Hill also does an awesome graphic novel called Locke And Key. Worth a look. They did make a pilot for TV, but it didn't get picked up or something. :(

He also did (does) a graphic novel co-written with his dad. I think it's called Road Rage and looks like it's about Bikers, but I've not read it yet.

Hello all, new to the forum...posted a bit on B.D. but not a fan of their new forum at all. Been reading close to 2 books a week for the better part of 5 years now.

Currently reading - George RR Martin - A Storm of Swords. Not Horror, but fantastic none the less.

If you dig vampires, give Robert R McCammon's They Thirst a try. A truly under rated author IMO

My absolute favorite vampire book!

FreddyMyers 04-13-2012 11:08 AM

Anyone ever read Jaws. Borrowed it from a friend but not sure i want to even bother with it.

Geddy 04-14-2012 07:42 AM

Death Cults, by Jack Sargeant

tuleven 04-14-2012 08:40 AM

dragonmage of mystara. third in a rather boring trilogy of fantasy books. you can figure out the plot from the title. woot woot.
the many deaths of the black company. second go-through of the series. if you don't know of it, check it. military-fantasy shit. the writer was a bit tough to get into (for me) at first, but once i got some of the names and terminology down i found that i couldn't put these books down. good-sized series too.

Geddy 04-18-2012 09:13 AM

Re-reading Salem's Lot by Stephen King - my favourite book of his.

Reading 32 Fangs by David Wellington

wizard of gore 04-27-2012 02:27 AM

Joe Hill,Heart Shaped Box

Neil Gaiman said this was the best debut horror novel since Clive Barkers Damnation Game.In my opinion this book shat on Damnation Game. Its the first horror novel iv read in a long time that i found really hard to put down.i loved the characters in this book too, quite original.

ten thumbs up!!

Clockworkedorange 04-27-2012 08:50 PM

finished-
A Storm of Swords - George RR Martin 5/5
Chuck Palahniuk - Damned 1/5
Fatal Error - F Paul Wilson 3/5
John Skipp - The Long Last Call 2/5

A Storm of Swords is the third installment into the Fire and Ice trilogy. Gotta read the first two to really get into it. Brutal and fast paced after a nice set up. I think more has happened in this book alone than the first two put together. Can the rest live up to what this book has offered?

Damned is my least favorite book of Chucks yet. Can't say that ill be putting this on my re-read list. How can this be the same person that wrote Survivor, Invisible Monsters, Choke, and Fight Club. Why Chuck. Why?

Fatal Error is the 14th book in a series of 15 in the repairman jack series. The series has had its ups and downs, but this was not one of those books that peaked too high on my scale. I think this series hit its peak back around 3-7, but lets hope the last book will reach a new high.

After reading The Bridge earlier in the year by John Skipp and Craig Spector, I was interested to see what John Skipp had to offer by himself. He sets a great plot and introduction, but his action and climax sequences are a kind of love it or hate it thing.

Reading Excavation by James Rollins at the moment, Debating between a few after that.

I did enjoy The Long Last Call but I wouldn't rank it among my favorites of Skipp's. Did you enjoy The Bridge, if so, I would suggest their classics The Scream or The Light At the End. I'm currently reading his first collaboration with Cody Goodfellow called Jake's Wake, so far I'm loving it.

Really enjoyed The Bridge. Gonna give Light at the End a read.

Been reading Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe".
String theory is awesome.

I'm starting this one tonight:

33 A.D. by David L. McAfee

"Jerusalem, 33 A.D. The vampires of the era have long sought to gain a foothold into Israel, but the faith of the local Jewish population has held them in check for centuries.
When one of their own betrays them to follow a strange young rabbi from Galilee, the elders of the vampire race dispatch Theron, a nine hundred year old assassin, to kill them both. The rabbi's name is Jesus. Killing him should be easy."

FreddyMyers 05-04-2012 09:17 AM

Just finished Jaws. Last 50 pgs are tense. Its weird, I couldnt picture the characters as anyone other than from the movie. Especially Quint.
