Got this in with my granddaughter tonight. Lots of fun for the "big" kids, too.

I got nightmares for months after watching that.

Dark House -

I probably should have passed on this one but I saw Jeffrey Combs and Meghan Ory in the credits. The movie is pretty much a miss even with them but Jeffrey Combs always manages to turn in a funny or at least inspired performance. I've seen Meghan Ory in a few TV shows and figured why not see what kind of horror movie she's in. It's a good premise. Actors go to stay and work in a house with holographic killers. Meghan Ory's character maybe has history with the house. I don't know, a twist happens that I didn't get and I don't think the writer or director got either. The acting is bad for the most part except for the two I mentioned. The movie has the sort of bad writing that anyone familiar at all with computers will cringe at. Namely a guy that can program physical holograms gets a virus on his computer. Forget about the fact that said virus is from a ghost. Yes a ghost actually gives a computer a virus. And the guy's response is to reboot it. Because we all know that will erase a computer virus. This movie was made in 2009 as well. I thought I was watching something from the 90s. The twist comes out of the blue and doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. A pass as there are better movies to watch.

Triangle -

I've wanted to see this one for a while. I saw the poster with Melissa George a few years back and it looked like a good one. Plus I've always had a thing for the Bermuda Triangle. I did a large scale project on it in lower school. Somewhere between 1st and 5th grade. The idea of things not working and an area people don't understand was always strange and weird. I can't believe this movie didn't get a theatrical release here in the States and was financially a flop. I doubt DVD and Blu-ray sales made up the rest.

In case any one else hasn't seen this one I don't want to spoil it at all. I've seen similar themes in movies and TV shows but I don't think I've seen it in horror. The movie is well done and basically like a full length Twilight Zone episode. I don't want to mention the episode because it will ruin the movie. Send me a message if you want to know. It's an episode that always scared me and I'm getting shivers now just thinking about it. Speaking about Twilight Zone, there is a series of prints coming out and I hope that episode is one of them. Here's the first one of Eye of the Beholder -

Thumb resize.

I'm going to try and find the posters that are in the Aeolus. That should make a good display somewhere one day.

There are tons of twists and surprises in Triangle and just when you think you know what's happening there is another twist. The movie has tons of beautiful cinematic wide shots and some horrific ones too. There is one shot in particular that's striking and tells the nature of what's going on. It's very much like something out of Twilight Zone or another genre that I don't want to mention as it will spoil the movie.

Just like Halloween and other great horror movies, Triangle leaves you with an unsettling feeling at the end. A definite movie to own.

The Objective -

This is almost a modern, more subtle version of Predator. I liked it but it's not something I'll watch again.

Damn this was bleak and depressing but its also incredibly well acted and has a very moving story. You just might need to watch something happy afterwards.

For the nth time on glorious 1080p HD. Love the film to bits, despite it's flaws and critic-bashings.

There's a theory that Wall-E is actually a crazy killer robot.

I, Frankenstein -- 6/10

I, Damn Heathen, didn't care a lick about this story, which would have been a thousand times more interesting had the villain succeeded, in whole or in part, with his master plan. The grand spectacle of it all did give me a thrill, though, and such horror-actioners are few and far between. Eckhart didn't seem fit for the lead; Nighy was his usual villainous self (always a pleasure).

Not as scary as the original [REC], but it has a good story, ad it's still as intense as the original. The one problem I had was that they sort of abandoned Mire and Ori. The ending was pretty cool though.

Offender (2012)

I was really surprised by it, a film I never heard of with an also (pretty much) unknown cast to me. The performances are pretty good if you can look past all the mean mugging - It is a little over the top but not to the point that it loses you. It is no STARRED UP but still not a bad little film:

I gave up on this movie after 20 minutes. Disliked the lead character too much to bother finding out what's gonna happen.

HEAVEN IS ONLY IN HELL 1993

A supposedly rare film by director Wim Vink yet I managed to find it on YouTube. At the beginning, they warned about extreme violence or some such but it was fine.
There was very little dialogue and quite slow-paced. But it had something that made me want to keep watching it.
Basically, a very ordinary girl sets out to commit a bloody murder to gain eternal life.

School cheerleaders meet with an accident and are resurrected by the resident creepy weirdo as zombified vampires. Story had potential and the girls are all hotties, but the execution wasn't that good. Nothing happens for the first 20-25 minutes and when it does happen, it's just not enough.

Lots of action mixed with generous doses of smirky humor. Kevin Costner tries to pull off a Liam Neeson role here and almost succeeds, if he wasn't too smug. 2 parallel plots usually aren't done well, and it's the same here. The climax is just too sudden and quick, and the family plot is never fully done. Amber Heard provides plenty of overdone eye candy (and a great upskirt peek). Average time-waster.

Oculus (2013)

http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps8b8b4c83.jpg

It could have been better or more interesting if they avoided or excludes those "ghostly figures with glass eyes" and focused more on psychological horror segment of the story. The story wasn't bad, liked the idea of a mirror with diabolical power to manipulate people around it & play tricks on them to kill or destroy each other but those "ghostly figures with glass eyes" looked kinda cheap & lame. I guess there are some parts where they might have needed to show some 'corporeal ghosts', in that case the effects needed to be better for that part.

"7500" 6/10

The new Takashi Shimizu creation has sure been a long time on its way. So was it worth the wait? Meh.. wasn't horrible.

The first 20-30 minutes of build-up where we get to know the characters were quite good. Then the horror elements began and this was when the movie started to piss me off. You would think that a guy like Shimizu would have a lot more imagination and creativity than just pulling off the same kind of scare over and over again. But nope, not in this movie. What we constantly get is a hint of something scary starting to happen, then we see a passengers horrified face, and then CUT. Next scene. This goes on and on until the twist at the very end. A twist that reminded me of a very bad shyamalan movie. Didn't make any sense whatsoever. And before that, no real climax. In conclusion, this was a pretty entertaining but not very satishfying effort.

So once again, bow your head in shame, Shimizu. I expect MUCH more from you.

"The Two Faces of January" 6-7/10

A well acted and somewhat entertaining thriller.

_____V_____ 09-04-2014 08:30 AM

Gripping, intriguing and tense throughout. It takes a lot for a contemporary horror film to keep me interested till the very end, and this is one of the few which did. There's plenty of nods to Predator, the Bermuda Triangle, Erich Von Daniken, Djinns, Hindu mythology and folklore of old, and all of it plays out like a well-made low-brow X-Files episode. And I mean that in a very good way.

Recommended to everyone who hasn't seen this underrated film yet.

Viy -- 9.5/10

This amazing horror-fantasy offering from Russia is not for the visually sensitive, as its director has one foot in the S. Raimi style and another in that of P. Jackson. I was unfamiliar with the folklore that inspired this spectacle, but suffice to say, my new acquaintance with it lends little thematic value to what I witnessed. There is plenty of obvious (and superfluous) symbolism of religion and classism. Check this out (ignore the user-added music):

Semi-decent British effort involving a post-apolcalyptic scenario where scientists are busy perfecting the one true alive A.I. which would be the solution to all their problems, including war. Intriguing for the most part, although production values were questionable.

Reminded me of Blade Runner, Lawnmower Man and Splice more than once. And the leading lady was gorgeous, specially in the nude.

PROJECT: METALBEAST 1995

A C.I.A operative injects himself with werewolf blood in hopes of becoming immortal and unstoppable. Blam!..he's shot with a silver bullet and frozen for 20 years.

20 years later, he awakens while undergoing experimental surgery to graft metallic skin onto his body. The doctors are unaware of his werewolf "genetics" and produce a pretty cool uber hybrid that just wants to end all days.

I liked it. :danger:

Europa Report (2013)
Thumb resize.

"An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon."

Don't let the poster mislead you.
The biggest part of the movie is set inside the spacecraft.
It's one of those slower movies where the story and the atmosphere are more important.
Overal not bad. Only the ending was a bit so and so. It wasn't bad, but the tone wasn't right.

A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)

I've always been a fan of Seth MacFarlane's work so I was looking forward to this one.
Wasn't as good as I hoped but still pretty funny.
Might have been better with another actor for the leading role.

When I saw the trailer for "The Possession of Michael King", I started laughing so hard. Really? You're gonna do all this possession shit ON YOURSELF? I don't believe in that stuff either, but why would you do that on yourself??
