I find his books to be easy reads rather than challenging reads so works well when in that mood.

I haven't read Lightning yet, that good huh? I'll have to check it out.

Doc Faustus 01-16-2012 08:45 AM

I was impressed by Watchers and not disappointed by Mr. Murder, but I haven't read another Dean Koontz book I liked.

I heard it wasn't a really good book. Although I'm still going to read it because I hate not finishing a series I started even if it's not great I make myself finsh. No clue why.

By that I mean, the last three Dean Koontz books I read disappointed me.

Samson and Denial by Robert Ford

Doc Faustus 01-19-2012 12:19 PM

Just finished Gord Rollo's The Jigsaw Man. Rough stuff, slightly over the top in its neonoir grindhouse cruelty but still highly recommended for hardcore horror fans.

sfear 01-20-2012 03:42 PM

Picked up a nice hardback of THE MURDERER'S COMPANION by William Roughead. This particular edition (1946) has a foreward by Alexander Woollcott.

How about a moderator starting a thread devoted to book purchases and not just books read as I'm sure more members than me are collectors and have a collection they are always building, and making it sticky?

Will do. I'm liking it so far.

Haven't started anything new yet, still reading CRYPTONOMICOM and THE DELIGHT OF GREAT BOOKS, but as Charles Dickens's 200th birthday is coming up early in February, the 7th I believe, I may interupt my current batch and read something by him. Haven't decided what yet.

FreddyMyers 01-23-2012 09:41 AM

What would you consider as Dickens best, besides the obvious ones.

Anyone read anything from Joyce Carol Oates?

Doc Faustus 01-23-2012 04:21 PM

I recommend Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque and Zombie. She also has a lot of great work in various anthos. I saw her read in person once. Even at 70, she is chillingly beautiful and her charisma is electric.

Not sure, I haven't read that much by him. GREAT EXPECTATIONS in high school, which I really liked, and a mystery story I found in an anthology devoted to Victorian Detective stories. I'm leaning toward some nonfiction like SKETCHES BY BOZ or AMERICAN NOTES FOR GENERAL CIRCULATION. I also found my copy of TALES OF TWO CITIES which sort of started tugging at the pocket my reading glasses were in.:)

Haven't read her but I do have CHILDWOLD which I always meant to get to.

GraveDave 01-24-2012 06:39 AM

Haha, this might sound a bit silly, but I'm reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It's pretty much a young adult novel, but I quite like it. Also, a compilation of H.P. Lovecraft short stories.

Yeah you're exactly rright I think Koontz is great to read after you have read something with unusual or poetic language like Poe or Lovecraft that's how I read most of the ones I've read so far. I'm edging towards occult non fiction at the moment though so may be quite some time before I get around to door to december.

Finished Brian Keene's A Gathering of Crows and Castaways and David W. Barbee's A Town Called Suckhole, which is hilarious, weird and action packed. Here's Ain't It Cool's review http://www.aintitcool.com/node/52730#3

Two very good books by Keene. I especially liked Castaways since i love Richard Laymon's stuff and it was an homage to him.

Haven't gotten around to reading A Gathering of Crows yet, it is the last of the Leisure books of his that I have and I guess I'm trying to savor it, lol. Castaways was a lot of fun and I can also appreciate the homage to Laymon.

It's not like it's gonna be Keene's last book. He's good no matter whose publishing him.

That wasn't what I was saying, it's just that that is the last book of his that I own that I haven't read yet. I haven't gotten into ordering books online yet but I really am loving the covers Deadite has been using.

Maybe the book that should be read more often around here is the one about at least one moderator making him or herself a little more available. I started a new thread in the book forum and was informed by a message flashing by so fast I didn't have time to read it in it's entirety but just enough to know my thread wouldn't appear until a moderator gives the okay or some such thing. Well, there's seven moderators listed at the bottom of the screen and not a one of them is online to help things out and I posted the new thread about three hours ago. Come on, show periodically, will you? No other forum I post at had this silly rule. I'm not asking you to justify it, just do your job, okay? Thank you.

Okay, thanks. Still, at least one mod should have poked in sometime in the past three hours.

I think it's best not to blame the mods. They don't need to do this and i'm sure it's a hell of a lot of work to do that mostly goes unappreciated. I do understand your annoyance though.

My apologies for not being at your beck and call at the drop of a hat. Of the 7 mods listed, there are only 3 who are active on the forum. I work a full time job, and my busiest days are the weekend. When I'm at work, I have to actually WORK. I don't get to sit around and surf the net all day. V lives in India. It would have been the middle of the night there when you posted your new thread, not to mention he has a new baby and family obligations. Zwoti lives in England. I really don't know much about him, so I can't speak up about the amount of time he has to patrol these forums, just waiting for people to create new threads so he can approve them.

Now you're going to say we need a few more mods if that's the case. Damn straight, Skippy! We've had several volunteers. Perhaps you know the secret to getting the admins to listen to the mods so this could happen. If you do, please either tell the admins to get on it, or let us know how we can get them to listen to us.

Thirdly, forgive me my snotty and petulant tone in this post. Checking on HDC is one of the first things I do when I get back from my 12 hour workday on Saturday, and I don't take it all that well when somebody posts that I'm not doing my volunteer job well enough for them.

sfear 01-28-2012 10:34 PM

Thanks for explaining the situation. I forgive you.

Seriously, the crack about mods not doing their job was spawned in ignorance and should not have been made. I apologize.

Kill Town, USA - by Joseph Love

I'm reading a pre-release copy for editing and I feel like it could do really well.

I'm also reading White Mule - William Carlos Williams. We just had a baby and a friend recommended it--not horror but really amazing read.

fortunato 02-01-2012 03:39 PM

A friend at work kept bugging me to read Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Just about finished with it.

Doc Faustus 02-01-2012 03:59 PM

The Dark at the End by F. Paul Wilson. I'll miss you, Repairman Jack.

ferretchucker 02-02-2012 12:16 PM

The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter...damn it's good but..damn it's fucked up :L

Little Red Riding Hood having sex with a wolf, Snow White dying and getting raped etc. etc.

Doc Faustus 02-03-2012 04:29 PM

Easily Carter's best book. The rest of her stuff pales in comparison.
