Have four copies of Brain that Wouldn't Die. Can't watch it anymore. Too depressing. 'cept when the thing in the closet does his thing. That's three minutes of great film.

Love the Wolf Man!

How cool would it be to experience these great horror classics again - for the first time. I started watching horror when I was quite young. Young enough that I remember being frightened by the bat flying above the coach horses in the opening of Dracula. I was terrified when Hutter spied Orlock's face through the broken coffin lid in Nosferatu, got a genuine shiver when John Barrymore's Jekyll became Mr. Hyde for the first time. These films were shown regularly on television when I was a kid (Creature Features, Demension 13, Uncle Don's Terror Theater, Mesphisto, Svenghoulie, Son of Svenghoulie. Everybody had their local hosts). I've seen the Wolf Man dozens of times. I'd love to see it again, for the first time! (Insert violin music here...)

I saw Friday the 13th, for the first time, at a drive-in theater with my best bud. We saw everything together first. Saw it the second time, days later, at the same drive-in with a lady friend. I knew where all the scares were in the picture, and got to watch her reaction. (Original FRIDAY THE 13TH SPOILER ahead!!) When Ari Lehman came out of the lake at the end, I had to pull her off the ceiling of my car! Good times!!

The original House on Haunted Hill! The new one did NOT hold a candle to it!

Vincent Price, "My wife... she's so amusing."

And the old lady in the basement. I mean, really, what basement doesn't have an old lady that floats around the central pit of acid?"

Yes, give me old horror classics, scares and laughs, anytime over this modern torture porn. (Not complaining, if that's your bag, have at it.) But I like to have a good time at the movies.

"It Came From Beneath The Sea" (1955)
-Kenneth Tobey

Plot: IMDB
A Giant Octopus, whose feeding habits have been affected by radiation from H-Bomb tests, rises from the Mindanao Deep to terrorize the California Coast.

Phantom's Review: One of those great fun 1950's monster movies.

-- The stop-motion animation by Ray Harryhausen is excellent, despite the fact that the movie's low budget made the octopus have six tentacles instead of eight.
The cast is lead by 50's sci-fi regulars Kenneth Tobey (The Thing From Another World, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms), Faith Domergue (This Island Earth) and Donald Curtis (Earth vs the Flying Saucers). A love triangle develops with these stars to keep the movie going.
If you love cheesy fun monster movies, then sit back and watch this one. You'll; have a lot of fun.

Watching Horror of Dracula right now. Having myself a little Hammer marathon today.

The original '51 Thing with James Arness and other folks...

Hadn't seen it in quite a while so it was interesting to check back in with it again and see if I noticed anything different. I thought the doctor who was trying to keep the creature alive was more funny this time around. Almost like, the more serious he got about his motives, the more I chuckled about it.

But I still totally dug it!

LOVE that film best adaptation of Henry James' novel "Turn Of The Screw" I've seen and I've seen many being a fan of the book.

Bob Gray 06-02-2012 10:50 PM

The Others wasn't too bad either but it's not as close of an adaptation as The Innocents.

Fearonsarms 06-02-2012 11:01 PM

I liked The Others have it on dvd but yeah I agree not really an adaptation more like "inspired by".

"The Return Of Dracula" (1958)
-Francis Lederer

Plot: IMDB
Count Dracula kills a passenger on a train in Transylvania and steals his identity. He comes to a small community in California where the Mayberrys are expecting their cousin from Europe. His strange behavior, sleeping all day and going out at night are surprising to young miss Rachel Mayberry. A policeman from Europe comes to investigate while Rachel's best friend Jenny dies unexpectedly. And the count plans on giving Rachel the gift of eternal life...

Phantom's Review:. This film was released a few months before Christopher Lee's "Horror Of Dracula" but was quickly forgotten when that classic came out. but it's a Surprisingly, well made little low budget thriller. Francis Lederer makes a suave Count. The rest of the cast does a decent job and the writing and direction are fine. Hardly a classic, but worth watching if your a "Dracula" fan, and keep your eyes open for a "colorful" death scene towards the end.

The Blob (1958)

To be honest i liked the remake better,i rearly say that but i think it was just because the remake was when horror was still good,in that 80s 90s splatter slasher stage

I like them both but for very different reasons. I don't think I could choose one and say it was the best. I'm a fan of both.

"Destroy All Monsters" (1968)

Plot: IMDB
Aliens have released all the giant monsters from their imprisonment on Monster Island and are using them to destroy all major cities on the planet. It is up to the daring crew of the super rocket ship X-2 to infiltrate the aliens' headquarters before the Earth monsters and King Ghidrah annihilate the planet.

Phantom's Review: Probably my all time favorite Godzilla film, outside of the original. Plenty of monster action, great "man-in-suit" FX and a fun exciting story. This was a great way to spend my Father's Day afternoon!

"20 Million Miles To Earth" (1957)
Plot: Amazon
The first spaceship to visit Venus crash lands in the sea, freeing a small native Venusian creature called the Ymir. Eventually growing to enormous size, it threatens the city of Rome.

Phantom's Review: One of the great monster movies of the '50's. Stop motion FX by the great Ray Harryhausen. Plenty of monster action decent acting and a fine story. Harryhausen manages to give the monster (called "The Ymir") a personality that sort of makes you root for him. The plot is reminiscent of "King Kong"but not a exact copy. This film is a minor classic, and should be seen by anybody who is a fan of 1950's monster films.

One of my favourite monster movies... Did you watch the original B&W or remastered colour version? Havent seen the colour version, but I know Harryhausen originally wanted it shot in colour.

wizard of gore 06-24-2012 11:10 PM

oh man ,soo many good classics im yet to see, bidding for phantasm and nosferatu at the mo heard there pretty good..well nosferatu should be interesting being from 1922

Lamoreux 06-25-2012 12:46 AM

Return of Dracula is Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt with a vampire impersonating Uncle Charlie.
20,000,000 Miles to Earth is an all-time favorite. (Though little Peppi is right up there with Donnie Dunagan and Lee H Montgomery for most annoying child stars in a horror flicker.)

Island Of Lost Souls (1932)aka The Island Of Dr Moreau-I found this to be pretty entertaining-Bela Lugosi was a bit more subtle than usual. Solid if a little predictable plot.Enjoyable.

Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1920)-goodness I had a very odd reaction to this especially the ending it seemed to tap into some primal fear. I found it to be possibly more nightmarish than it might actually be-I have no idea why.

Ghost of Frankenstein

The Villain 07-12-2012 06:43 PM

The Gorgon (1964)

Another strong character and story driven film by Hammer. I've always enjoyed the turning people into stone bit too so that made it even better.

hueyisme 07-17-2012 05:38 PM

The 1932 version of Dr. Jeklyl and Mr. Hyde with Fredric March was the best version. The others were kind of tame, or had too much gore.

Someone mentioned the Godzilla movies, one of my favorites was Godzilla Vs. Megalon. Funny as hell, I laughed my ass off.
