on my seventh birthday my parents knowing that even at that age i liked horror stuff randomly bought a movie called guess what......Hellraiser Hellbound 2 and my whole family was over at my house and i decided to play the movie, in the first 15 seconds of the movie the glass in my hand exploded, now any movie that would do that to me is one hell of a good horror.

OK, Seriously... Dawn of the Dead, and I'll tell you why. Because when I was eight years old, my babysitter thought it would be a great idea to take me and my six year old brother to see the Dawn of the Dead/Town That Dreaded Sundown double feature at the drive-in movie theater in Kent, Ohio. Did I mention that I was eight? |

As for scary horror movies, the last one that did it for me was Candyman. For some reason that just hit my scary bone. Others that have done it for me are: Friday the 13th Part IV - Was my 12th birthday when I saw it and gave me nightmares. Poltergeist - Was like 10 when I saw that (My mom could still kill my cousins for taking me to see that) and it gave me huge nightmares. Couldn't sleep with the lights off for a week! As for anything more recent, nothing's really scared me. Most movies don't for whatever reason. Must be getting cynical in my old age. :) |
For me, it would have to be "Children of the Corn", I saw this movie in early 1985 on video, was at a cousin's birthday party -- he was turning something in his early 20s -- and they rented this movie, mind you it was not the first horror movie I saw as that would have to be either "Happy Birthday To Me" or "Prom Night" and never had a problem (but now that I think back on it, it was "Prom Night" that I saw first). That all changed as I used to love to run through the corn fields as I lived in the country...after I saw this movie I never entered a corn field again, it's now 20yrs later and I still will never enter a corn field again; though I've got no problem eating corn on the cob!

OK, my absolute worst was this thing called "The Town that Dread Sundown." Its totally 70s and I saw it at the drive-in with my family when I was like, 5 or something. We didn't see all of it. I got so freaked out that I had a serious attack and we had to leave. "The Town that Dread Sundown".....brings back BAAAAD memories. Anyone seen it?
Top 3: The Ring Jaws Gigli....no, wait...Town that Dread Sundown! Hey Mlouzon! Killer Klowns is the greatest movie EVER!!! so therefore, you rule. |

Same goes for TCM, The Shining, Halloween, The Blair Witch Project etc. (though all for different reasons, but "terror" is a word often flung around with glee). Trouble is, this build up invariably has the effect of crushing disappointment on the viewer who finally hopes to find out what all the fuss is about... perhaps it is because by the time you actually get round to sitting down in front of these movies ("OK guys, this is IT! Here we GO!"), you are far to well armed and defended against all the elements of it that should really hit the spot. In recent years, watching The Blair Witch Project on video with next to no background information on either the film or the hype (apart from a very brief nose around the famous website) proved to be a fantastically scary and engrossing experience I hadn't had for years of watching movies - and I'm certain my lack of scepticism (not about the "is it real?" element, but how supposedly scary this film was meant up to be) helped this no end. Back to The Exorcist, gotta love that horrible, yellowing, demonic little face and those ghastly sneers in a man's voice coming from a 12-year-old girl... brrrr! |
