i was wondering how you knew so much about this but i just saw that you're from england yourself.
since you do know about it i was wondering-are these movie catagorized as nasties completely illegal? |
They were illegal to sell or rent.
ANY film, no matter what it was, after 1984/5 had to have a BBFC Video Certificate and any that did not had to be withdrawn and not sold or rented. Which put many video firms in financial trouble (as well as video shop owners) as they now had to pay for the BBFC to certicy their films. Even a 'Disney' film that would obviously get a 'U' HAD to go through the process to get that 'U'. But it meant that many of the smaller video labels could never afford to pay for their films to be certified, or knew they had no chance of getting a certificate (at least without massive cuts at best) so they simply folded. Some of the 'Nasties' were taken to Court as 'Obscene'. And if they were found guilty you could find yourself receiving more extreme fines or even a prison term. The distributer of "Nightmares in a Damaged Brain" (despite it being a cut print) was sentenced to 6 months in prison. You could own them. But you could not sell or rent them. Shame my site is down, as I have all the info (and titles) on there. |

I was raided by Trading Standards myself years back (with a freakin Police riot van parked outside and a police escort) when i was selling off some old vids (not 'Nasties', just pre-certification titles). they took some stuff away, we had crap printed in the local paper etc etc... In the end they kept 3 films (one action film from Hong Kong, one very tame horror film and the Carradine martial arts flick "The Silent Flute"!!!!) and gave me a caution. One of my County's many silly attiudes. |
I never said Exorcist was banned i said along with many other films it was unfairly labelled a nastie, tcm, evil dead, dotd they all fell foul of the media hysteria of the day. By the way mr 42nd you owe me £12, i bought jungle holocaust after reading your review i was'nt impressed.

"JH" is a damn fine exploitation film. |
I totally agreed with your review for cannibal holocaust, but just found JH dull. Do you want to buy it off me £8 to you.

I don't know if this would be considered a "nasty" or not but I remember seeing "Mark of the Devil" at the theatre on its first run, and they were handing out barf bags.
Its kinda tame by todays standards. |
Nasty?
Well, in the prono called "The Sex Files", a chick gets anal, then blows the guy. And judging by one of the close ups, she was none to clean back in the cellar. That gets logged under "extraordinarily nasty" |
