loved it.

Oculus (2014)

Good, not great, horror. A top 25 horror film for the year, which is more of a testament to the lack of great horror this year than to Occulus's intrinsic brilliance. It's a down year in horror when Godzilla is the best movie.

FryeDwight 08-10-2014 01:46 AM

ZOMBIELAND (2010). OK flick which has some funny moments and decent zombies, but found the characters unlikable and humor gets forced quickly, but worth seeing once.
Noticed it was filmed in Georgia (like THE WALKING DEAD) and the scene where Columbus meets Tallahassee on the car strewn highway sure reminded me of TWD opener for Season 2...a lot. **1/2

I loved it. It was so much fun. All of the characters are extremely likable and entertaining. The villain was kind of generic but for a first movie villain, he was fine. I really liked that they didn't take this movie too seriously as it is kinda silly but i liked that it wasn't dumbed down too.

Into The Storm
http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/...psf2e7fdfb.jpg

So i had a hard time at first getting into this movie because it's shot in a way that looks like found footage but it's obviously edited in more of a documentary style but there's no reason why we the viewers should be watching it. One character does end up with the footage at the end and i guess i could understand them compiling it together for a documentary but that was never said and plus there was one person's footage that shouldn't have been able to be used as well as two other characters whose footage definitely would not have been used. That's another thing, there were way too many people with cameras. But once it got into the plot it got a lot better and was good.

Really difficult movie to watch but really well made. Acting was great, and I liked how there wasn't really an antagonist and protagonist because both Haley and Jeff are pretty fucked up. I also liked how Haley would trick Jeff (and the audience) to think that he has an advantage. One thing I didn't like was how quite a few of the shots were extremely shaky.

Webb went the Raimi route, and left Paul Giamatti's Rhino a cameo. Too many things happen at once and poor Spidey is left with very little in the end. Still, a pretty flash-bang-bam-wham entertainer.

* * *

Better film than the one above. Well fleshed out characters, an excellent story taking up after the events of the first film, plenty of breathless action and fantastic actors. Specially glad to see Robert Redford back.

Oh, and Scarlett Johansson's tight ass still kicks...well...ass!!

"At The Devil's Door" 6/10

From the director of "The Pact" comes something more or less the same, altho this is more about possession than haunting.

The first 10 minutes started out really promising, being pacy and creepy and all. And the movie WAS well made, pacy and well acted, i'll give it that. There was just one big problem. It wasn't fucking scary.
Sure it had a lot of atmosphere and it did have a couple of effective jump scares. But most of the time you just get creepy music while looking at a shelf, a chair, an empty room and what not. THAT'S NOT FREAKIN SCARY!! A face in the window, THAT's scary. An empty couch, NOT scary!! Jesus..

You would've thought the director knew this already after making "The Pact" where the scares worked. But another thing he still hasn't learned is to make it clear where the protagonist is in the movie. Like the case was with "The Pact" I also in this movie had a hard time figuring out if the girl was home, in the abandoned house or some place else. That's mildly irritating.

And the ending was a big pile of crap.

Oh well.... worth a watch.

It's Troma released and I thought it was great! It has the feel of a 1970's slasher film infused with a bit of humor. It really exaggerated these films.

I really like the mask..he fills that container with the blood from victims and sucks it through..very cool.

ChronoGrl 08-12-2014 02:07 PM

Wow. It's been about a month since I've checked into this thread... Here are my most memorable viewings...

Oldboy (2013)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps9a1c35ad.jpg

I should have known better... But I let my curiosity get the best of me.

Oldboy is one of my absolute favorite movies and Chan-Wook Park being one of my favorite directors... With that context, as soon as I heard that there was going to be a remake, my reaction was Why?

We can debate the value of remakes back and forth (and have, endlessly on this forum) - There are a few camps in regards to remakes - The camp wherein the Auteur takes a different view of source material (examples: The Thing and The Fly) or there camp wherein the director is pretty damn faithful to the original (examples: Let Me In, Psycho). Then there are the remakes that just tweak the original a bit (examples: The Grudge, Quarantine).

I'm a fan of remakes where they either take a different stance on the source material; I LOVE both The Thing and The Fly. I also appreciate that third category, where the remake is similar but with some tweaks (I actually thought that both The Grudge and Quarantine weren't that bad).

But as for the straight retelling... I don't understand it - I thought that Let The Right One In was such a masterpiece; why did it need to be remade? Granted, Let Me In was solid, but completely unnecessary.

Lee's remake of Oldboy falls more in the "Tweak" camp where he remakes MOST of the original, but makes changes slightly... For example...

[SPOILERS]
  • Our captured Oldboy draws a face on a pillow and hugs it. I should feel empathy (I suppose) but I thought it was a hilarious reimagining of Wilson the Volleyball. This is only worthy of note because Brolin's performance was so abysmal, this was the first point where I almost turned the movie off.
  • The torture scene between Oldboy and the man who kept him (not our villain, but the one who owns the giant prison-building) was pretty brutal - He cuts slits into his neck and threatens to pull the head off. I guess that's points FOR this movie on a scale of one and incredibly violent.
  • Instead of incest between a brother (our Villain) and his sister, it's incest between the sister and her father. ... Really?
  • Instead of seeking revenge for being shamed, the Villain is seeking revenge BECAUSE HIS FATHER WENT ON A MURDER SPREE KILLING THE SISTER, HIS MOTHER, AND TRYING TO KILL HIM. ... Again, really?
  • And then, finally, Lee tries to make us believe that Oldboy isn't REALLY doing his own daughter (played by Elizabeth Olsen; the only actor here who is doing a decent job) through an oddly elaborate TV show that Brolin is forced to watch during his captivity... Which is set up to make him believe his daughter is someone else... I guess...?
  • Then there's the end - The only change that I think is interesting - After realizing that he's been doing his own daughter, Oldboy decides to go back to the hotel Cell and pays for him to be locked up. This is interesting because Lee is playing with the concept that all of his humanity has been taken from him... But, again, Park did it better.

Ugh. I've spent too much time on this already. My point is that if you're going to make tweaks to the original, they better damn well be good. While the end was an interesting twist, everything was just awful, horrible, terrible.

Also - While I do like Brolin, he was definitely not on his game for this one. Which is really too bad.

Oh, and the Villain is Sharlto Copley (District 9) doing a REALLY weird accent. This guy is really a terrible actor in general (he was f'ing awful in District 9)... He goes too broad and I just find him comical, not threatening.

So - Yeah. This was awful. Terrible. Awful. **pukey emoticon**

Spike Lee - What has become of you??

Snowpiercer (2013)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps29ff08ab.jpg

I had been looking forward to this for a while - I really like Joon-ho Bong's other work (notably The Host), and wanted to see what he'd do with a high-concept science fiction premise such as this. Plus, I am a MASSIVE Terry Gilliam fan and was super-excited to see a larger-than-life bizarre scifi movie come out...

And I loved it.

Now, I have to preface that statement by saying that it's definitely not a perfect movie - Some of the dialogue is really awkward (I wonder if that's the language or cultural barrier), the message can be heavy-handed at times, AND I'm not a huge fan of the very very end...

BUT

I liked the rest of the movie so much that those flaws didn't matter.
  • The direction and set design were great - You really got a sense of the classes of the train... I also loved the transition from car to car...
  • Tilda Swinton was great. End of story.
  • Kang-ho Song was also great.
  • Actually, come to think of it, the whole cast was great.
  • I like a good distopia story and this one had my geek senses quivering.
  • Heavy-handed? Yes, but I found the dialogue to be very, very interesting (from both sides, actually).

Not a perfect movie but I am VERY thankful that it's out there. I want more solid science fiction (it's been a good year for it!)

I don't think that I'm doing it justice. I loved it. I'd lover to hear what other folks thought of it.

Note - I say read the description before watching; if you can't buy the concept, then you should skip it.

They Came Together (2014)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psd82edf3f.jpg

This was hilarious. Definitely one of those parts-are-greater-than-its-whole movies, but that's exactly what it is - If you like Wet, Hot, American Summer, then you'll definitely dig this. Paul Rudd and Jason Mantzoukas, in particular, were utterly fantastic. And, well, of course Amy Poehler...

Thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Looking forward to seeing it again (I have a feeling I'll enjoy it even more).

Haunt (2013)

Really solid movie about a haunting. I was really impressed. The writing was really weak at times and the acting could have used some improvement BUT overall, it had a great creepout factor and the end was great. Recommended.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psb7f37028.jpg

I actually initially had no interest in seeing this... I mean, I thought that Rise was OK, all things considered (read as: better than Burton's remake), but it didn't necessarily make me want to run out and see Dawn.

That being said, the reviews turned me around and I'm glad that they did...
  • The special effects were AMAZING. I am floored by how realistic the apes looked. And the talent (Andy Circus and Toby Kebbell were absolutely perfect).
  • The writing and acting were incredible - Oh, man, the pathos - I truly cared about and empathized with the Apes... There were definitely multiple moments where the theater got a little dusty (heh)
  • The score was fantastic - I'm not sure if it directly borrowed from the original movie or if it was influenced, but there were a couple of scenes where the onscreen action playing with the music made me shiver with joy.
  • True tension and horror - There were moments that were actually chilling. I was really impressed.
This was a lot more layered and complex than I ever dreamed. Absolutely loved it.

Wow. Pfew. I just loved this. I really am floored with how many well-done scifi movies are coming out right now (the movies listed above plus Edge of Tomorrow).

This movie was just plan fun to watch - I adored all of the characters (Rocket and Drax especially stole the show - I can't believe how great Bradley Cooper did - He was doing a cartoon voice!! Not just his own voice!)...

Lots of laughs, lots of feels, and great action.

I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

"Haunt" has been... um... haunting me for the past couple months. I see the trailer in my YT recommendations, it's the first thing I see on Netflix, and it's on the recommendations on IMDb. You think I should watch it?

ChronoGrl 08-12-2014 06:20 PM

I always have a hard time recommending horror because everyone has different things that scare them

BUT

Yes, I say definitely give it a watch. While we've seen so many ghost stories before, I thought that this had a little unique twist. Good ending too.

It's a good solid little haunting movie. Check it out.

horcrux2007 08-12-2014 06:30 PM

Newer supernatural movies are some of my favorite horror movies, so I'm willing to give this one a shot.

ChronoGrl 08-12-2014 06:35 PM

Cool - I'd love to know what you think! And if you hate it, blame Angra; he's the one that introduced me to it. ::wink::

What other modern supernatural movies are your faves? I'm always looking for recs.

Speaking of modern supernatural fare - Have you read Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box? Fan-freaking-tastic ghost story.

Oculus is my second favorite horror movie of all time (I don't think anyone else in the universe other than like Mike Flanagan agrees), I'm a HUGE fan of found footage movies (some of my favorites are Grave Encounters, [REC], Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield), and I have Sinister coming up (looks really cool and interesting) as well as Insidious (my seventh grade English teacher recommended it to me... strange person to get a recommendation from, but she's like 30 lol) which looks awesome; I really like James Wan's movies.

I don't watch Doctor Who, so I didn't know who Karen Gillan was when I first saw the movie, but she is a really great actress. Brenton Thwaites has been getting in some big movies too such as The Giver and Maleficent (which I liked :P). He seems like he's gonna pull a Jennifer Lawrence and all the sudden blow up into this big actor.

"Haunter" sounds familiar, but I've never heard of "The Caller". What are those two about?

ChronoGrl 08-12-2014 07:24 PM

Hmm - So Haunter and The Caller are the types of movies that you don't want to describe too much, you know? I wouldn't want to give too much away...

With Haunter, it centers around a girl who is being haunted but - by what? Maybe the ghosts that used to live in her house - Maybe she's one of them...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2345567/

With The Caller - A girl receives a phone call. And it goes from there. And, no, it's not the urban legend of the call coming from inside the house.

This was directed by Spike Lee. The cinematography and directing work are good, lead actor Josh Brolin is good... it's just the story parts and logic are preposterous. One knows when a film is trying to be taken seriously, and what parts seriously; and when that's unsuccessful, it can be disastrous.

The ending climax, which is the big reveal of the film, is about the worst offense: the antagonist Adrian locks up the alcoholic anti-hero Joe for 20 years because Joe told everyone at school Adrian's sister was screwing her father in the school green house. She commits suicide. Adrian's father was sleeping with his daughter, wife & Adrian. And when it comes out, he shoots his family & self to death, but Adrian survives.

Adrian is rich, put Joe in locked room for 20 years, kills Joe's wife, & has Joe's baby daughter Marie raised by employees who would make Marie fall for a guy like Joe. Adrian releases Joe so that Joe will sleep with Marie who he doesn't know. When that happens, Adrian watches, tells Joe what he did... this is revealed as Adrian's goal, Adrian thinks Joe now understands what Adrian went through, and Adrian can kill himself in peace now. Say wha?

Does Adrian believe he lives after death, or otherwise he could have just killed himself DayOne to end his distress... Does Adrian think this 20 year-in-the-making incestuous encounter sets him up well for peace after suicide? Sure, he's insane, people are irrational creatures, still doesn't make the film satisfying.

Fairly slick and quick moving film based on a cool idea. If you haven't seen it, and would like to, best experience is to just play it without reading anything about it (like I did). Good acting, sharp simple sets, effective directing.

SPOILER:
================================================== =======
New lady move into a new apt, gets call by crazy older woman... from the past, who has the power to chance the present. This is a concept that's difficult to keep suspension of disbelief intact, but I think the director does a good job keeping things moving to the end. Plays a bit like a Twilight Zone ep in that way.
