And Thora Birch really bugs me.

C/C+

I am now currently surfing On Demand to see if fearnet can satisfy me...

Most of the free stuff on Comcast on demand is there because it's cheap junk nobody wants to watch. I have found a few gems there, though. Unlike Return I enjoyed Blood Trails. Not innovative or anything, but I thought it was suspenseful- there was plenty of blood- and the pacing was fast. It's good for one watch, IMO.

the thing (1982).

watched this with a friend who'd never seen it before.
the thing has a new fan.

I agree with you about fearnet. I find it infinitely frustrating that there is nothing but crap to offer, especially since I was so excited when I heard that there was an On Demand horror channel... O, how I was deceived...

Interesting that you brought up Blood Trails... I actually started to watch it because it was the only fearnet movie that was appealing (and I had recently taken advantage of Evil Dead II and was in the mood for watching something new tonight).

I honestly didn't get that far into it. I thought that the movie started out really well, found it building creepy suspense (when she wanders into the cave on her bike, I was reminded of how I felt the first time I saw The Descent - claustrophobic, chilled, helpless), but as soon as the Big Bad enters (though it was a ridiculously wonderful and bloody entrance, which was pleasing), I felt as though it would turn into a just plain Stalker/Slasher film and, I don't know, I just didn't feel like watching a two-dimensional character ("She belongs to me") hunting down another two-dimensional character (she bothered me as a character so I didn't mind the prospect of seeing her go). I don't have a problem with derivative films, as long as their well-done... But I didn't feel as though this one was particularly well done.

And I don't get it - Why would a policeman stop her in the first place?

Then again, I am feverish with very little attention span, so that could have a lot to do with it.

...

What I did manage to get through was Jacob's Ladder. I had never seen this movie and had borrowed it some time ago from a coworker. Looking for something to watch, I decided that I might as well pop this one in so that I could finally return it...

and... wow.

Great psychological thriller (though I HATE the term "psychological thriller")... Sufficiently and effectively creepy, builds suspense, character, and pathos, not to mention you actually feel his alienation and confusion, which takes a lot of talent from a directorial and acting standpoint.

I was impressed and will have to own it one day. A/A+

neverending 04-20-2008 06:21 PM

I THINK the cop stopped her at the beginning because she wasn't supposed to be riding her bike through the tube tunnels.

ChronoGrl 04-20-2008 06:22 PM

Ahhhhh, that makes sense.

See? It doesn't even bear on the movie itself, but it was enough to distract me. :(

Plus, that ghost kid was scary as fuck!

Don't get me wrong, Dead Birds was okay, and I might even half-recommend Blood Trails, but I just wasn't motivated enough to write anything detailed about them. On the other hand, 5ive Girls was awful.

Oh, yeah, it's a blast! Cagney really shined in that role- definately deserved his Oscar.

Enchanted. I was really surprised, I liked it, and not a little. Having a 2 year old girl has made me very familiar with the disney princess movies. This had a nice self-aware tongue in cheek feel that made even the musical numbers tolerable.

Patrick Dempsy was agreat straight man. And I could not get past the irony of the sweet innocent princess being played by the slut from Drop Dead Gorgeous. :D

urgeok2 04-21-2008 06:27 AM

Mr Magoriums Wonder Emporium.

hmmm ... uneven at best.
Mostly a pretty bland film with a few flashes of well written poignant dialogue shining through - but those moments were too few and far between to save this film.

it tried to be a far more important film than it was and failed.

the focus was all over the place - whenever there was something important to be explored - it would shoot off on another direction.

a better filmmaker/writer could have turned this into far more than a Charlie and the chocolate factory wannabe.

was put off by the music and the opening title sequence as well.

The Mothman 04-21-2008 06:40 AM

American Beauty

gorgeous film.
Kevin Spacey plays a very likeable asshole.

newb 04-21-2008 07:53 AM

GRINDHOUSE....on Starz.....this really is the only way to see these movies....even at home it had the drive-in feel.

and for the record...if Roth ever makes "Thanksgiving"...I'm so there:D

Bringing Up Baby (1938)

It is very funny, but I find it a little overrated. Grant and Hepburn were both much better in the vastly funnier and timeless The Philadelphia Story.

Kane_Hodder 04-21-2008 10:26 PM

10000 BC.
Nothing to see except the special effects. Very disappointing.

Re: Cloverfield - We might have a DVD release here soon too. I can hardly wait.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Pretty solid comedy.

Took the recent bad taste of Death At A Funeral and Meet The Spartans from my mouth. There were moments of eye-rolling, but overall I liked it.

Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis were hott eye-candy, and the scripting and the pace of the movie was great. Pretty decent direction too.

Overall, a good watch.

I loved it.
It's funny and dark on the surface while having a lot of symbolism and depth when you sink your choppers into it.
