Phantom of the Opera! with Lon Chaney.

Aliens of the Deep.

Jimmy Cameron's IMAX documentary...the name and the first 15 minutes made the premise gleefully delicious, and the rest of the 75 mins didn't. For the most part, it was talk, talk and more talk inside the subs between Cameron and his film-making crew, and crew from the NASA.

The so-called ocean "Aliens" don't make a show till late in the second half, and even then, they are offered bare minimum screen-space (about 8 mins or so). Overall, I was pretty disappointed by this one. Marine engineers and explorers might go ga-ga over it, but I was left wanting.

funny games remake (2008)

i went in expecting to be disappointed on a few levels, but came out feeling very pleased (well...as "pleased" as one can feel after watching this movie). i definitely wasn't disappointed. i mean, it's not as good as the original probably for the simple fact that it's not the original, but it was still extremely effective. the performances were good, too (naomi watts was great).

i think fans of the original will be satisfied.

Blood Simple - 9/10
I was in a Coen Brothers mood today. I love this film. It never gets old. Later, I will probably watch No Country For Old Men....AGAIN!!:D

Horton Hears a Who

wasn't looking forward to this one ... getting really sick of jim carrey and steve carell ... and i didn't much enjoy them in this one either...

BUT........

the visuals were stunning .. especially the whoville scenes.

otherwise - seeing people/creatures fall down, drop things, eggagerated movements ... the same old shit shown in every single god damn animated film in the last 5 years was all right there again.

speaking of which - there was an ad for Ice Age 3....

i'm sure it will disappoint as well.

Wedding Crashers

I have heard that Horton was pretty good and the wife wants to see it too so at least I know the visuals are good.

Daughters of Darkness

atmospheric vampire movie with no fangs, very little blood, and lots of boobs.
didnt build up any tension or provide any scares but it had that european 70's vibe that i like. (and a couple of very attractive ladies)

urgeok2 03-16-2008 04:35 AM

Seraphim Falls

hmmmm..

I kind of enjoyed the 1st 2/3s of this movie until it hamfistedly attempted to transcend the genre (western) into some kind of fantasy morality odyssey
/play.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou achieved this much more deftly.

(took me until half the movie was over to realize it was Pierce Prosnan and not Dennis Quaid.)

so it wasn't a bad film - untill the end - but it wasnt a good film really either.

see 3:10 to Yuma instead if yer hankrin' fer an oater.

I actually thought Tooth and Nail was pretty good.Granted it could have been done alot better but I liked the concept of it all.

The worst of the After Dark films I've seen so far is Lake Dead.God awful writing and godawful acting.

angrymob 03-16-2008 04:04 PM

Invasion of the Blood Farmers

Holy moley, this film was even weirder and funnier the 2nd time I watched it...some really demented moments in this awful, clunky movie. Whew!

No Country For Old Men (2007)

AuroraBorealis 03-16-2008 10:30 PM

Once Were Warriors.
This movie is really, really good. It's violent and there are very disturbing scenes dealing with different kinds of abuse, but it's a really interesting look into a culture that I've never been exposed to before. The story is engaging, and the acting is pretty good too. The guy who plays Jengo Fett in the newer Star Wars movies is one scary guy.

Doomsday.

Detailed review later in my Movie Reviews thread...but this one kicks some major ass! A great throwback to the actioners of the 80s like Escape From NY and Mad Max, it was a fun ride from start to finish.

Plenty of gore, splatter, cheesy moments and some awesome cinematography and neat direction (although it did have some minor script flaws)...this is one movie which BEGS to be seen on a cinema screen (ala Grindhouse) for the experience to be believed.

Nowhere near it. Think of a cross between Escape From NY, Mad Max and The Warriors, with a nudge to 28 Days Later.

Does the recipe sound delicious?;)

videodrome
(1983) and network (1976)

-what you might call a small "media under the microscope" marathon. both great films (especially network), and both frighteningly appropriate today.
