That's what made him an instant star because he showed amazing ingenuity and visual flair on a budget of nothing. No one makes an action film for $4000 quite literally 1/100 of what would be considered a "low budget film."

The story was weak, I give it huge props because the imagery and themes are like a tex-mex filtered spaghetti western and the story is the first film in the Trilogy that continues with Desperado & Once Upon a Time in Mexico which were made with Millions of dollars.

I understand not thinking it was awesome, because it ain't, but it is an important film.

I just watched
Black Book

Paul Verhoeven's Dutch language WWII themed flick is a gem. And excellently complicated tale with relentless action, tension, tragedy, sex and actual (and unexpected) romance. Some of Verhoeven's best work, and I say that as a fan. The Acting is top-notch. The more I contemplate it, the more I like it.

9/10

I understand that part. It was just a huge let down, probably because i saw 2 and 3 first.

ShortBus - Wow.... I just couldn't get past the first 10 minutes, there must be something about a guy blowing a load in his own face that I just can't watch(I'm serious, I starteg gagging and had to turn off the movie). 1/10 (I like to think of myself as open minded, but I just couldn't watch the rest)

I'm splitting a ten ticket deal with my girlfriend for the Glasgow film festival, I read about REC, considered it as a possible 5th, you have given it some hope.......

Iv'e narrowed it down to ReC, Teeth and the Areial..... Has anyone seen all three and can recomend one?

fortunato 02-05-2008 03:06 PM

It's showing at the film festival here, I'm not sure if it's on General release anywhere.

Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix- Very Good

The Reaping- Much better than I was expecting, worth watching.

The Borne Ultimatum- FABULOUS.

The Invisible- very good, very eerie.

Ratatouille- ok

Resident Evil:Extinction- I loved it and I could care less what anyone says.

Alvin and The Chipmunks- I really thought this was one I would have to break out the iPod... but it was very funny and parent friendly. I recommend this for everyone. There are alot of laugh out loud moments:)

If you can deal with the subtitles, and can read fast, because its in spanish and they speak fast, then I'd say go for REC, there was this one part, that I was expecting something to happen, and my eyes are glued to the screen, gripping my seat waiting for it, and then it happens, and even though i was expecting it, i jumped outa my seat. It was great. OH yeah btw, if you bitched about Cloverfield because of the POV then don't watch this, its just as bad.

Oh yeah, I just re-watched Return of the Living Dead for the first time in a few years. God I can't believe how lame they look now compared to back then. Back then they looked cool. Both the zombies and the people.

And I am pretty sure that me finding two characters, and their actions, in a movie unlikeable and unfunny doesn't mean that I "need to learn" anything.

I agree, you don't need to learn anything, now go make me a sammich

Perfume: The Story of a Murder (2006)

This was kind of a let down for me. It had good intentions, and it was visually arresting, but I had a hard time buying any of it.

American Gangster.

I am not a very big fan of Denzel Washington, but I must admit...he impressed the heck out of me in this one. He and Russell Crowe are picture-perfect characters who are involved in a cops and robbers game with a nice mobster touch, re-living the legend of Frank Lucas, the ruler of New York of the 70s. Rivetting movie from start to finish, complimented by some really brilliant direction by Ridley Scott.

I highly recommend this to Alky, newb, Rod, Jenna, Fortunato and the rest who love fast-paced, gritty flicks which leaves you glued to your seats.

Yep, 'twas a good one, indeed. It's a three hour jolt ride that feels just over sixty minutes. I loved it.

Jaws man, was on AMC.

joshaube 02-06-2008 08:07 PM

I really wanted to watch Rear Window, but my damn satellite company doesn't carry TCM. Thanks for that. Instead I watched Scarecrows in HD. I own the DVD, tried watching it, but I found it to be too dark to make anything out. I'm glad I caught an HD airing.

As for the film itself... I likely won't watch it again. No big loss, it was a 2/for deal with The Burning... which I WILL be watching again.

Freakin Awsome!!

Cinestro 02-07-2008 08:08 AM

Wolfhound - with all the negative this cheapie received I thought it was going to be awful, and to be honest it was funny, a little erotic and just plain weird.

Kane_Hodder 02-07-2008 09:15 AM

The Eye remake.
It could have been better, and more scary.

Roderick Usher 02-07-2008 09:27 AM

The Stendhal Syndrome

Not great, but still an enjoyable and really dark tale. The CG work was weak, but the concept totally worked for me. The true weirdness in this film isn't the titular syndrome, but how Asia's character essentially undergoes a sex-change through the film. She starts of feminine then becomes macho and finally ends up like a man in drag.

Too bad Troma's horribly grainy, pan & scan transfer is so shitty! This film deserves a better DVD release.

6.5/10

A couple of times you thought something huge was going to happen and you were let down only to be completely shocked when something WOULD happen.
