Actress Googie Withers, best known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes, has died aged 94.

Googie (born Georgette Lizette Withers) died in her home in Australia on Friday.

http://cdn.mos.totalfilm.com/images/...014-470-75.jpg

She was born in British India in 1917, and she took up acting at 12 years old, when her family returned to England.

She worked on a huge number of British films throughout the '30s and '40s, including The Lady Vanishes, Powell and Pressburger's One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing and Ealing Studios' portmanteau spooker Dead Of Night.

Withers met her husband, Australian actor John McCallum, on the set of The Loves Of Joanna Godden in 1947, and they were married the next year.

The pair starred in nine more films together, as well as a number of plays. McCallum, who is remembered for co-creating Skippy The Bush Kangaroo, died last year, aged 91.

Withers final film performance was in Shine in 1996.

I wonder how she died

Seriously though, its not funny to make fun of the dead. Not really surprising though. Its sad the road people take sometimes.

Zombieness 07-23-2011 11:48 AM

It's pretty sad. She was talented and beautiful before all this drugs and alcohol crap ruled her life. My condolences to her family, friends, and fans.

nightmare_of _death 07-23-2011 12:36 PM

I didn't listen to her music a lot but she did have talent. RIP Amy

Freak 07-23-2011 07:04 PM

I wasn't suprised by this at all.

cheebacheeba 07-23-2011 07:20 PM

I liked hm...?two? of her songs.
I thought she actually *used to* be attractive, and saw there was talent for the kind of music she recorded, which I appreciated if only for the fact it didn't sound like the majority of commercial music we hear played and overplayed these days.
I'd have liked to have seen her recover, but yeah I remember thinking about two years ago she completely looked like she was on deaths door, regardless of what she was she became a disgusting junkie...hard to say "will be missed" because what I saw that was good about her seems to have fled the scene some years ago.

I guess I'll throw out the R.I.P.
Surely some very pissed off dealers right now.

fortunato 07-23-2011 08:05 PM

I never really listened to her music, but I always though this song was bad-ass:

At any rate, it's a sad story and a real shame.

Bizarre 07-24-2011 06:06 AM

Yeah, I think it is a shame. She was very talented but obviously very emotionally damaged as well...sometimes.

It isn't the drugs that are the problem but simply having no support when the pleasure/pain scale of drug usage becomes exclusively tipped towards pain.

Seeing the Facebook posts about how she stupid and "just another dead crackhead" make me sick. How can these people who have acheived nothing and think about nothing of any substance (I know these people) just disregard someone simply because they turned to drugs to deal with their problems? They probably don't even know...but it's all okay because seven people have "liked" it.

RIP

It is a great shame about Amy. Not for me - I wasn't a fan of her music and didn't know her personally (I'm sure it would have come up before now if I did!) Even so, at the end of it she was just a young woman with friends and relatives. She made some terrible choices, but even so.

Hollywood heavy-hitter John Calley — who produced such big-name projects as The Da Vinci Code, Closer, The Remains of the Day (for which he was nominated for an Oscar), and Catch-22 — has passed away at 81.

During his 50+-year career in film, Calley served as chairman and CEO at Sony Pictures Entertainment and studio chief at Warner Bros. and MGM/United Artists. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Calley the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 2009.

Beginning his career in television production in the 1950s producing such classic series as Mr. Ed, Calley would go on to produce for Filmways pics like The Loved One, The Cincinnati Kid, Castle Keep, Ice Station Zebra, Topkapi, The Americanization Of Emily, and Catch-22.

While filming Joseph Heller’s novel of wartime insanity, Calley became identified with a seismic shift in Hollywood’s balance of power, as his official biography notes. “The late 1960s ushered in a new generation of younger filmmakers just as the major studios were discovering the vast potential of the youth market. ‘Kids were kings. After Easy Rider, everything was exploding everywhere,” Calley recalled in a 1999 newspaper interview. ‘We were all young, it was our time, and it was very exciting. The founders were no longer in charge … What had been this rigid, immobile structure had completely come apart, and what was left was a lot of freedom.’”

Calley became head of production, president, and vice chairman of Warner Bros from 1968 until 1981 under the leadership of Ted Ashley and Frank Wells and ownership of Steve Ross. That studio entered a critical and financial heyday with such acclaimed films as Dirty Harry, A Clockwork Orange, McCabe And Mrs. Miller, Deliverance, Enter The Dragon, Mean Streets, The Exorcist, A Star Is Born, What’s Up Doc, Blazing Saddles, The Towering Inferno, Dog Day Afternoon, Jeremiah Johnson, Klute, All The President’s Men, Superman, Barry Lyndon, Chariots of Fire, and Woodstock.

Calley’s memorial will be held at Sony Pictures Studios. He is survived by his daughter Sabrina Calley and step-children Emily Zinnemann, David Zinnemann and Will Firth from his marriage to Meg Tilly.

Actress Frances Bay died on Thursday of pneumonia complications. She was 92 years old, The New York Times announces. The cousin of the actress, Marly Zaslow, confirms her death and its cause.

Actress Frances Bay, Jerry Seinfeld’s “nana” in the sitcom, has died due to complications from pneumonia. She spent her final hours in Tarzana, Los Angeles, her cousin, Marly Zaslow, confirms.

Frances bay was born Frances Goffman, on January 23, 1919, in Alberta, Canada. She began acting before World War II and the most noticeable role in her debut period was the one in “Winnipeg”. She was also a radio show host at the time.

She changed residence when she got married. She and husband Charles Bay moved to Cape Town in South Africa. Overall, her personal life was far from being perfect. She had an only son, who died very young, at the age of 23. Her husband died in 2002. Just months after his death, she was involved in a car accident that left her without a part of her right leg.

At a professional level, she was one of the most loved actresses, by both her co-workers and a huge number of fans. In the fall of 2008 she received a star on Canada’s Walk Of Fame, partly due to the enormous number of letter from fans requesting it ( about 10,000 letters). Among the people who sent letters to the Selection Committee, there were also some of the most popular actors in the world: Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, David Lynch, Monty Hall, and more.

Frances Bay’s most notable roles were Mrs. Pickman in “In the Mouth of Madness”, Adam Sandler’s grannie in “Happy Gilmore” and Seinfeld’s nana in the Jerry Seinfeld sitcom. In 1986, Bay appeared as the doddery aunt of Kyle MacLachlan's character in David Lynch's Blue Velvet. This role seems to have endeared the actress to Lynch, who recast her in several subsequent works, including as a foul-mouthed madam in Wild at Heart, and as Mrs. Tremond on Twin Peaks and its movie spin-off, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.

Fans of "Seinfeld" know her as the tough lady who fought with the show's star over the last loaf of bread.

She has no immediate survivors.

Steve Jobs, 1955 - 2011

FROM MTV NEWS: Apple announced Wednesday (October 5) that co-founder Steve Jobs had died at age 56.

Jobs, who stepped down as Apple's CEO in August, announced to his employees in 2004 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. While he appeared to have successfully removed the cancerous tumor that same year, his health continued to deteriorate over the years and he took a medical leave of absence in January.

When announcing his resignation, Jobs wrote in a statement to Apple's board of directors, "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

David Hess, an absolute icon in the genre and someone who portrayed a character known as “Krug” in Wes Craven’s Last House On The Left has always left a withstanding impression upon me. His character truly scared me to the bone as with all his characters he portrayed.

It comes with sadness that we report that David Hess has passed away in which the news comes from his official Facebook page when his children recently updated his status with this tragic news.
