The STE 02-23-2007 10:48 PM

Round 1: Match 2

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
From the writer of Being John Malkovich and the director of crazy music videos, one of the best and most original romantic comedies (sorry, guys, that's what it is) ever made, and Jim Carrey's best performance by a mile.

vs

Pulp Fiction
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Quentin Tarantino's crowning achievment, the comeback for Travolta, arguably the movie that made Sam Jackson a fuckin' star, spawned pretty much its own sub-genre, and about a dozen other accolades one could throw at this movie.

The_Return 02-23-2007 10:51 PM

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I'll admit that Ive never seen Pulp Fiction in its entirety, but Eternal Sunshine is one of my all-time favourites. (and I wasnt overly impressed with what Ive seen of Pulp Fiction)

The STE 02-23-2007 11:40 PM

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is, surprisingly, winning 3-0

(not that I'm complaining, I prefer it as well, I'm just surprised is all)

ShankS 02-24-2007 04:16 AM

DP McCoy 02-24-2007 05:35 AM

So much for that.

Posher778 02-24-2007 07:29 AM

Pulp Fiction

Although Eternal is right behind it, difficult choice.

The STE 02-24-2007 08:21 AM

and Pulp Fiction comes right the crap from behind to make it 4-3 Pulp Fiction

alkytrio666 02-24-2007 08:23 AM

Pulp Fiction, hands down.

The STE 02-24-2007 08:58 AM

Round 1: Match 3

Raging Bull
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Martin Scorsese's second best movie, the best sports movie ever, best bio-pic ever, and one of De Niro's best performances. At one time this was real close to making my top 5 of all time.

VS

Sin City
http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Not since the 9 hour cut of Greed has there been a more faithful adaptation of a written medium. I'd go so far as to say that this isn't an adaptation, it's a straight translation of the comic books to film. And besides AKIRA, it's the best comic book movie ever, and remains one of the best uses of black and white after colour came around (yeah, even better than you, Wizard of Oz!)

ShankS 02-24-2007 10:10 AM

shit, hard one.... De Niro it'll have to be.

cactus 02-24-2007 10:25 AM

The STE 02-24-2007 10:05 PM

Round 1: Match 4

Memento
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Sure, it's not the first movie to tell events out of chronological order (Betrayal came way before this), but it's the best, and the chronological reversal acts as plot enhancement rather than an emotional manipulator. Fantastic performance by Pearce, Joey Pants is wonderfully ambiguous, and Nolan gives it a fantastic neo-noir feel.

vs

Star Wars
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
Plot-wise, acting-wise, for the most part not so great, though charming in its simplicity. The story here is the insanely innovative special effects. And Darth Vader.

odelisk 02-24-2007 10:06 PM

Memento... easy.

jay o2 waster 02-24-2007 10:06 PM

Memento for sure

pinkerton 02-24-2007 10:37 PM

Star Wars(i'm a nerd)
