old book

I've just been reading William Hope Hodgson series books called CARNACKI. Your basic Ghost hunter with almost realistic tellings of hantings, both real and fake within the story. These are very old books and the setting is in what seems the mid to late 1800's in England. Very good read.

jenna26 09-12-2005 06:34 PM

Finished a Stroke of Midnight. Pretty good, though I still say Hamilton needs a new editor. Too many phrases are repeated too often and there are glaring mistakes on occasion. But still an interesting, imaginative series.

Just started Velocity by Dean Koontz. Premise is good and the first chapter made me laugh a lot for some reason. :p

Velocity by Dean Koontz

Velocity by Dean Koontz was good, but at the same time felt like it was rambling on looking for the ending. Mind you, the whole book was a mind flip and the ending I still wonder about. Not a bad read just a weird one if you can hang on.

Roadwork- Richard Bachman aka Stephen King----hadn't read it in years, actually haven't read alot of his stuff in years, so I'm re-reading alot of his books again...

dead sleep by greg iles it was ok, the ending was sort of predictable.

I agree, I really feel like he himself didn't know where the book was heading. Overall, I wasn't that pleased. But it was a quick read and I liked the first half.

Just started Survivor in Death by J.D Robb....yeah I read them, what of it....? :p

The varied characters were a strong point: It seemlessly combined everything from the very human, very realistic character of Richard, to the larger-than-life characters such as Croup and Vandemar. The world he created was also breathtaking, as well as very realistic i a fantastic sort of way. In fewer words: I loved it, cover to cover.
This is great!

Try"Good Omens"co-written with Terry Pratchett

Also" American Gods",this one is my fav

I don't know what my problem is, but I just can't seem to get into Gaiman's novels. Practically everyone I know loves his work, but his long form stuff just falls flat with me. His short stories (and the Sandman, of course) are a different story, however.

Back on topic: I just finished reading the Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 15, edited by Stephen Jones. Some very strong entries in this year's collection.

novakru 09-16-2005 02:41 PM

Keepers by Gary A.Braunbeck

I could write crap like this-if this is the standard for winning the Bram Stoker Award-I'll be winning every frigging year

I can't believe I wasted money on this.I am going to find out where this bozo lives, knock on his door, burn his book right in front of him and demand my money back-with INTEREST.

noctuary 09-17-2005 08:26 PM

Lost on the Darkside, edited by John Pelan. The Darkside series is uneven in general, but this edition was more good than bad.

Ive only read one of his short stories, it was included with the copy of Neverwhere I read. Not sure of the name, but I think it was "We Can Get Them for You Wholesale". VERY cool story.

jenna26 09-18-2005 10:28 AM

Just finished Survivor in Death and just started Potraint of a Killer: Jack the Ripper, Cased Closed by Patricia Cornwell. It may be turn out to be complete bullshit, but I read everything I can about that particular case. Fascinating.

That sounds very familiar... Do you happen to know if that story was in Smoke and Mirrors? My memory is hazy at the moment, but I could swear I've read that one...

novakru 09-19-2005 05:40 AM

Is this the story where the old lady buys the holy grail??

The_Return 09-19-2005 01:07 PM

Noctuary- Yup. It was printed in the back of Neverwhere as an ad for Smoke and Mirrors.

Novakru- Nope. In involves a bargain hunter who hires a hitman to kill his wife...and things go from there. Amazing ending.

BillyNedar 09-21-2005 11:36 AM

new Vonnegut book

It isn't horror or SF, but it's excellant

noctuary 09-22-2005 07:42 PM

Phantoms, by Dean Koontz. Overall, my opinion of Koontz hasn't changed, but this was, in my opinion, one of his better efforts. Entertaining, some slightly creepy parts. Lit equivalent of a popcorn movie.

Lamb:The Gospel According to Biff,Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

I picked this up awhile back,I read it,put it down, read other books, picked it up again.
Not as good as I thought it would be.

noctuary 09-27-2005 09:02 PM

Servants of Chaos by Don D'Ammassa. Pretty good read, heavily inspired by Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."

In-depth reviews, cast and plot details, histories, and illustrations of everything from cheesy no-budget exploitation to the embarassing efforts of major studios.

Just finished Brimstone by Preston and Child

Very nice.

jenna26 10-02-2005 05:39 PM

Just finished a mystery anthology called Dangerous Women edited by Otto Penzler. Some excellent stories there especially by Joyce Carol Oates, John Connolly, Ian Rankin and Thomas H. Cook. Now I am reading Flights: Extreme Visions of Fantasy edited by Al Sarrantonio. Very good so far.
I also picked up a couple of Neil Gaiman books because I saw his name mentioned here, will start those next (and he also has a story in the fantasy collection I am reading now).

noctuary 10-04-2005 07:17 PM

The Red Church by Scott Nicholson, a story about an evil congregation in the Appalachians. Not all that impressive. For some reason, I got the feeling that it was a book that had been shelved for a few years and had been dug out for release. Some of the cultural references are a bit dated, but 2002 is the year of publication.

Despare 10-06-2005 06:45 PM

Zombie Survival Guide - Max Brooks

The Sandman Companion by Hy Bender. A very interesting read for anyone who is a fan of the series.

The Descent by ?? Long <- Don't bother

Still Life with Crows
by Preston and Child

noctuary 10-15-2005 06:13 AM

The Walking by Bentley Little. Although I do enjoy Little's work, this novel brought to light some problems I have with it. He is a brilliant stylist, and his narrative flows very well, but he seems to have a problem with ending his books. The finale seemed a little flat and sort of unrealistically happy, as is typical of his work. The setup is probably the best of any Little book I've read though, so we can say this one was more about the journey than the destination.

In the middle of The Da Vinci Code right now. Before I started reading it, I assumed it was just a summery of facts, myths, ect. But it's a fictional story, and a very interesting one at that. So far, a great book :)

The Code!!-This is my most borrowed book....no.2 is Beauty by Sheri S. Tepper (AND it hasn't been returned yet,now that I think of it!)
I think you would like Beauty,Marroe. It's a spin on the Sleeping Beauty Tale.

I should check it out, I like things like that...I'll be starting on "Wicked" soon, which of course isn't a spinoff, but kind of the same deal I think. Thanks for the suggestion.
