Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance. Quite possibly the darkest film I've ever seen. I don't think that it was quite as good as Oldboy, but nevertheless it was a very well made film. Overall: 8/10

The Phone

I've heard alot of bad things about this flick on review sites, but I liked it. I've noticed that most of the asian horror flicks seem to involve a ghost story, and so does this one. The ghost aspect isn't that original, but the way they use it is a nice twist. The movie was enjoyable and worth watching if you like asian horror films. I will warn you though, if you find a cell phone ringing to be annoying, it's gonna get to you in this flick.

"Sisily 2km" 7/10

Finally!!

A DIFFERENT asian ghost horror movie. Well, actually itīs more of a gangster comedy than a horror movie, but it still contains a long haired female ghost.

Both the story and humor is quite fun.

Summary taken from IMDB:

What we have here is a quartet of "goodfellas" that are looking for a former associate that has lifted a heavy sum of diamond off them. In the mean time, a rural family has come across the compressed pieces of carbon and don't feel like giving them up. Conflict ensues. As things go, the mob boys begin to witness strange things (like a girl's ghostly body hanging at a deserted school) that leads them to believe that the family is hiding more than just the diamonds....End of summary.

I really liked the actor (Chang Jung Lim) playing the lead role as the mob boss. He had a really cool look and seemed like a good actor. Hope to see him in other horror movies in the near future.:)

I love Tony Jaa and I really hope he gets the exposure he deserves. I heard he has a big movie coming to the US and a videogame, if that doesn't get the hype train rolling nothing will.

"Nigthmare" (Yes, itīs spelled that way) 5/10

Average.

A group of people are being haunted by a female ghost (with long black hair of course) because of a dark past, that has been kept a secret.

Youīve seen it all before.

Charisma

A rather baffling film that deserves a little study. Excellent camera work and hypnotic score. I'm not sure if I picked up on all the deeper themes of this film, but I was fascinated nonetheless. Overall: 8/10

Five Deadly Venoms and Shogun Assassin. I wish Shogun had more decapitations, I was a little dissapointed with the whole "relieves his victims of their heads" line and there was like three decaps. Oh well.

Audition would be the last asian film i saw or maybe it was Gozu, i can't remember which one i saw last, but it was one of those two

Kurosawa's Dreams
A little preachy about nature but I really liked Crows and The Tunnel.

Kitamura's Alive

Really cool offbeat action flick and I loved that he named one of the chapters Versus. Anyway, good movie but there was a little too much as far as visual effects go. The last fight was hard to watch because of it but it wasn't really too bad because it made the movie seem more like a real life anime.

dewaholic 01-29-2006 08:29 PM

Last Japanese movie I saw was The Grudge. I'm a new fan of japanese horror. for about 2 weeks or so now. 1st 1 I saw, ( well I only saw the last part) I can't think of what it's called, but it's just 1 word. The scene I saw was this couple was having sex & the guy got stuck. The girl was in agonizing pain. The guy broke free & the guys brother climbed out of her pussy. That right there made me want to see more asian horror. And I'm amazed watching the credits. If I was Asian, I'd be illiterate.

noctuary 01-30-2006 07:22 AM

^^That would be Gozu, an amazing film by Takashi Miike.

Bright Future

As if it was in question at all, with this film Kiyoshi Kurosawa secures his place in the immortal pantheon of Japanese master filmmakers. An amazing picture of such depth, heart, and life, that I almost expected the characters to walk right off the screen and into my living room. If you haven't seen this yet, I recommend watching it right away. Overall: 9.5/10

"Acacia" 5/10

This might be the saddest horror movie iīve ever seen.

Summary taken from IMDB:

"Acacia" stars Hye-jin Shim and Jin-guen Kim as a married couple unable to conceive a child. The husband is a doctor and the wife spends her time judging student art and knitting.Things change when the couple adopts six year old Jin-seong,a mysterious boy obsessed with drawing pictures of an acacia tree that he believes is the reincarnation of his dead mother.Soon the wife becomes pregnant and Jin-seong becomes more unhappy. On one rainy night he disappears mysteriously..."

- End of summary.

From the moment i saw the adopted boy i instantly felt sorry for him. He looked both cute and sad at the same time and i have a soft spot for excentric outsiders.

The whole time, i thought that the "Mom" acted oddly and unnaturally distant towards both her adopted child and later her own baby. I donīt know if thatīs just the way korean moms are when it comes to their children, or maybe she was just a bad actor?
But did NO ONE think about the newborn baby in the end??
