It's more of a local thing right? You're right, I haven't heard of them, probably won't hear them unless I do some searching either correct?

They range in size/success I guess you could say.
Most of them are known nationally which in itself is relatively large, but no, I don't see it being available in a huge portion of the overseas market.
Does that make them bad though?
I'll let you judge - I've found stuff from most of them pretty easily online.

Not necessarily, but either would being a garage band.

I didn't say that though, just that they weren't garage bands...there seems to be the general vibe in this thread that if something doesn't make a large impact on the international market that this is a negative thing.
Personally, I'd prefer any of the bands I'd mentioned than most of the music from AUS that has seen more success abroad.

MD was right though, the Aussie music that has made an impact on the international scene isn't very good lately. I do like Jet, some Wolfmother, and a couple songs from The Hives, and Silverchair although I wouldn't call either good. I'll check out some of the bands listed though, never pass up an opportunity to hear something new. You should put a couple songs in the Listen to This thread.

I also don't like Sonicanimation or Pure Evil Trio.

Sorry Newb but Amsterdam isn't on that map and every American college kid knows about Amsterdam. Your map is incomplete at best. ;)

Air Supply was British... must have been Little River.

EDIT: After checking out wiki it looks like Air Supply had a guitar player and vocalist from the UK and a lead vocalist from Australia but The Little River Band was formed in Australia.
