I now pronounce you chuck and Larry

It's another Adam Sandler movie, funny enough, but too long for what it is and a typicly bad ending.

Darjeeleng Limited - the new Wes Anderson flick. i have to admit i hated The Life Aquatic (love Bill Murray but HATED this film as self-indulgent and pretentious nonsense). what made me sad was i adored anderson's Bottle Rocket and think Rushmore is one of the best films of its era. well, while Darjeleeng isn't quite up to Rushmore it is by far the best thing Anderson has done in years and the performances by Schwartzman, Owen and Brody are brilliant. the film is quirky and weird but these moments usually hit the mark perfectly. 9.5/10

Ohhhhh... I love Wes. I really need to go out and see that... Tenenbaums was my personal favorite...

And now for my last seen films... The next 3 in the 8 Films to Die For HorrorFest!

Lake Dead
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...l/lakedead.jpg
I mean, with a quality title such as this, how can this movie possibly be bad?!

...

So three sisters find out that the grandfather that they thought was already dead, wasn't until, well, he actually died and left them a motel in a remote location. They travel up to the motel for the weekend... And are hunted down with such poor direction that there is no suspense, horror, or slashing at all... Bad writing, TERRIBLE direction, and a really horrible poorly executed storyline. D-

Mulberry Street
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...l/mulberry.jpg
By far my second favorite film of the Festival so far (I've seen 6 out of 8 films). Mulberry Street is another modern variance of the monster/zombie infection formula. Very obviously influenced by 28 Days Later, this film uses gritty filtering and a well-directed shaky cam to create believable suspense and paranoia. Mulberry Street takes place primarily in a New York City neighborhood and follows the tenants in an apartment building as they strive to survive a spreading mysterious infection. The writing is smooth, the acting fantastic (the characters believable and charming), the special effects and make-up are truly horrifying. Definitely a successful chapter in the increasingly growing zombie mythos. Loved it and plan on owning it. A must for zombie/monster movie fans.A-/A

Tooth and Nail
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...othandnail.jpg
So the Earth has suffered through the apocalypse; fuel has been completely depleted and for some reason, the world's population is decreased by 2/3 in a matter of, oh, three years... yeah... So a group of local tools (seriously - tools; if you survive an apocalypse, I'd imagine that you'd be pretty badass... But not in Tooth and Nail) hole up in a hospital and are targeted by a gang of cannibalistic rogues.

SUCH good themes:
Post-apocalypse
Society vs. Anarchy/Cannibalism

But... Yet... So... Bad... I find it difficult to believe that the Earth would be cut down by 2/3 in a matter of 3 - 5 years and that the survivors were pathetic cultish victims (there are possibilities in here!)... Michael Madsen had a very, very small role... But not enough to keep this thing interesting... The only thing to keep this movie above LAKE DEAD was the fact that it had some pretty great action scenes... The rogue cannibals adorned themselves in viking gear and yielded delightfully pointy objects (spiked clubs and that whatnot)... They definitely tear through the hospital and turned this movie into a siege film... But not a good siege film. D. Stay away.

fun and strange, but far too kinky. way too many sex scenes killed the movie.

It's good... but the ending sucks compared to the sequal.

The 8th Plague ~ suprisingly.....its not bad. The first few minutes are slow, there is nothing particularly original here, and of course it has its flaws (people doing really stupid things for one, and that is usually a problem in these kinds of films). But really, its a gory good time. Recommended to those that appreciate low budget horror.

Scarecrow Gone Wild ~ yeah, pretty much what you would expect....;) Though I am disappointed by the lack of scarecrow acrobatics in this one, the first one was hilarious...*sighs*

The Covenant: Brotherhood of Evil ~ the most interesting thing about this movie was Edward Furlong's way oversized suit.....he almost seemed liked a little boy playing grown up...LOL...just impossible to take seriously, and doesn't qualify as the "so bad its good" kind of film.

Beowolf and Grendel ~ actually pretty good, a good cast, for the most part, and it looks great. I enjoyed it quite a bit. But if you are looking for a faithful adaptation of the original epic poem, you would be VERY disappointed.

And Halloween 2 is not even close to the original. Multiple viewings will confirm this.

No it's not as good, but possibly the most apt sequel ever made.

The one with Gerard Butler?
It was pretty good, I must say.
Kinda took all the supernatural elements out of it but a very good version IMO.

The sequel was definitely better. I honestly thought that the first movie was incredibly overrated, though my opinion might speak more to my own personal desensitized self... I thought it took them waaaaaaay too long to get to the hostel, and once they did, there wasn't enough torture to really justify the cult praise. Then it turned into a revenge epic that just... wasn't interesting.

At least the second film brought you to the hostel immediately... and the torture scenes were definitely up to par. I loved the end as well. The revenge epic was short and sweet. And well done.

There should be a sequels thread... Honestly, the only clear reason that horror fans have given me that Halloween 2 is a fantastic movie is that it picks up seconds after the first one leaves off. I'd say that that is the ONLY thing working for the film (that and Donald Pleasence)... There is no suspense. The murders are over-the-top and ridiculous. And the direction isn't nearly as good.

You don't like sex scenes then?

They passion between the the characters is the most integral part of the story. With out the sex scenes it would not have been near as good.

To compare it to Blue Velvet is harsh, but I think they are to hard to split. I would probably say Wild at Heart, just. They can't really be compared though even if Lynch did make them both.

Well it was written by Carpenter and Hill though Rick Rosenthal directed, I think it holds up on it's own, but it always going to be linked to the first movie as it starts where the first one ends.. IT's more so the extended ending...

a sex scene or two is ok, but it was too much. i hate romance, personally, and there was more of that then there was of wierdness or violence. I didnt like the characters as much either. Bobby peru and Sailor were cool and all, but neither compare to Hopper in Blue Velvet.

OK, so I have just wrapped up the final 2 films for the 8 Films to Die for HORRORFEST.

And what I have to say is WOW and WOW... But for two different reasons...

Nightmare Man

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-man_small.gif

There's B-Grade horror and then there's b-grade horror. This film is about a woman who receives a creepy mask and then thinks she's haunted by the Nightmare man, a demon that comes to her in her dreams... And then it comes to her reality...

I honestly have no issue with monster/slasher films, but the production value of this film was so incredibly low that everyone in the theater couldn't help but give way to laughter. The demon's mask was absolutely pathetic, and attempts to catch the victim were just... poorly choreographed... The dialogue was stereotypically bad, but not so bad as to be self-conscious parody... Just an all around bad movie. As in, I want that hour and a half back. WOW. D-

Crazy Eights

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...hts_poster.jpg

Session 9 meets The Grudge. In a good way.

A ghost story involving 7 old friends, an old found box, and an old building. The present is confronted by the mistakes and shortfalls of the past. Definitely not a novel concept, but the execution was so incredibly clean that it left me digging my nails into my poor boyfriend's hand throughout the entire film. Crazy Eights takes a similar setting as Session 9 with the cast dealing with ghosts of their past (both metaphorical and literal) and couples it with the slow, methodical, hauntingly creepy suspenseful direction similar to Takashi Shimizu and other Japanese directors (the ghost aspect also follows similar themes). The writing and acting were incredibly vivid and captivating.

This was definitely the scariest film of the entire festival and a must-see for horror fans. A/A+

WOW. Great way to end a horror-fest weekend!

absolutely.
i love this film. it really is terrifying the way it forces you to feel connected to the killer rather than the "hero."

i just watched inland empire for the second time.
all i have to say is that i don't understand how david lynch so flawlessly translates nightmares into film. there are two scenes in particular that make me feel so on edge, so uncomfortable that i feel like i need to leave the room.
great stuff.
