My 31 Nights Of Halloween continue with:

Dead Of Night" (1945)

Plot:
An architect seeking the possibility of work is invited to spend the weekend at a country estate , when he gets there, he realizes he recognizes the house and his fellow guests from a series of nightmares he's been having.
When he tells his story, the other guests also recall bizarre and supernatural stories of their own.

Phantom's Review: Suspenseful low key thriller. Arguably, the best of the British anthology movies. Excellent acting and direction along with some great stories make this a highly recommended film.

My 31 Nights Of Halloween continues with:

"Mad Love" (1935)
-Peter Lorre

Plot: IMDB
In Paris, the great surgeon Dr. Gogol falls madly in love with stage actress Yvonne Orlac, and his ardor disturbs her quite a bit when he discovers to his horror that she is married to concert pianist Stephen Orlac. Shortly thereafter, Stephen's hands are badly crushed in a train accident- beyond the power of standard medicine. Knowing that his hands are his life, Yvonne overcomes her fear and goes to Dr. Gogol, to beg him to help. Gogol decides to surgically graft the hands of executed murderer Rollo onto Stephen Orlac, the surgery is successful but has terrible side-effects...

Phantom's Review: Brilliant, simply brilliant.

My 31 Nights of Halloween concludes with:

"The Mad Magician" (1953)
"House Of Wax" (1954)
"The Haunting" (1963) Best ghost movie ever

I hope everyone had a great and safe Halloween

"The uninvited" (1944) 4/10

Wouldn't call it horror. Wouldn't call it good.

And wtf is up with the music score?? It's almost cozy. Like watching a christmas movie. Yuck!!

Four of the Hammer Frankenstein films on TCM on Oct. 29. I love what they did with their Frankenstein series- placing the emphasis on the Dr. as the real monster. Cushing was just fantastic in this role.

Captain Clegg aka Night Creatures (1962)

No Frankenstein...No Dracula but still another fantastic production from Hammer with a great cast. Especially it's been a double treat for me to see Cushing & Reed working together in this film.

The only film to feature 4 kings of horror- Price, Karloff, Lorre & Rathbone! I love it!

Two very identical films (even the beginnings are similar) make a great double-bill to introduce my wife to the world of Poe, Corman & Price.

Worst fears have come true. She wants more...

neverending 11-07-2010 12:38 AM

Haha... that's great! Certainly House of Usher was a great masterpiece. Those Richard Matheson scriots weren't pure Poe by any means, but they had true style and real psychological force. Corman's Poe movies are some of the greatest horror films of all time.

Absolutely! If you consider them as a whole as a franchise then CPP is my favorite horror franchise of all time...2nd is Karloff's mad scientist series.:)

How come it'd be your worst fear? that's a great news. As a great horror fan You're now obliged to show every CPP film to her.:D

Imagine the deep, resonating voice of Price's Roderick Usher saying that line which I said. ;)

Unquestionably. That's why we had one more tonight before heading to bed in a bit...

Needless to say, she loved it. For tomorrow, I am thinking Haunted Palace and Tomb of Ligeia.

vanlutz 11-07-2010 07:42 PM

Metropolis on TCM INCREDIBLE!

neverending 11-07-2010 07:50 PM

I love Tomb of Ligeia. Price is so haunted in that film. One of his finest performances, IMO.

Back to Back: The Thing '51 & '82

The Thing from Another World (1951)

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6680/thething51.jpg

Though it may loosely based on Campbell's original story but still it was pleasantly entertaining and surely 50's one of the best sci-fi output for the genre.

...back-to-back. Made for a great double bill.

I still got the opening theme from the original stuck in my head! Catchy tune.

First time viewing, and I was very impressed. Boasting of a background score by Ennio Morricone, Barbara Steele is very much in her elements as she performs her dual roles to perfection, and the haunting atmosphere really adds to the mood of the film. Recommended to all fans of vintage gothic Italian horror, and to Steele fans too, but of course.

The War of the Worlds-1953

The feeling of impending doom is what really makes this movie. Might sound stupid but i think this version feels more real than the (awful) remake. I couldnt imagine how the audience felt after watching this at a drive thru or theater when it was first realeased. The whole way home everyone in the car was probably looking up at the sky waiting to see one of the alien spaceships breaking thru a cloud. Must have scared people senseless back in the day.

GoreHound13 11-16-2010 08:31 AM

House on Haunted Hill (1958)
The Bat (1959)
Last Man on Earth (1964)

You gotta love Vincent Price..... May he Rest in Piece.

I agree with you 100%. The 1953 War Of The Worlds film is my favorite film of all time. I have probably watched it more than any other film in my collection.

Though the 2005 remake has some merit, it cannot stand up against the original in any way.

Look at the fine special effects! They didn't have computers ( or at least like we have today) at that time.

The whole scene where the Martians come out of the gully in the original was all done on a large table top!

I have it on DVD so now I won't wear it out.

GoreHound13 11-16-2010 09:05 AM

Thank god for dvd's without them over half my horror collection would be warn down to nothing. Also LOVE War of The Worlds (1953)

*SPOILER*(I guess)

Love the gully scene. Also has one of the best endings cause is the simplest. The martians simply couldnt adapt to our germs and in return got sick and died. Simple but also the most realistic IMO.

It just goes to show ya, humans are tough shit because we live in germs, pollute the ocean!

So many horror films so little time. My favorites are all of the John Carpenter films, especially Halloween 1978, and the Zombie versions. Next up Poltergeist and The Ring.
