Went to see the simpsons movie.
Pretty much tops most of the eps from the last few years. Great animation, decent storyline, not just full of backwards references, two long time things confirmed, lots of laughs. Haven't been inclined to buy a simpsons boxset yet, but I might go ahead and pick this one up. Yet another "stay to the end of credits" films, for at least one extra you might not wanna miss... |

Danger: Diabolik (1968)
Mario Bava directs this fumetti (Italian comic) adaptation of super-thief Diabolik with super-stylized flair. Sure the story is preposterous, but John Phillip Law as the skin-tight-leather-clad criminal Diabolik is always cool and his willing accomplice/arm candy Marissa Mell is, as Eva Kant is, as my old man would say "easy on the eyes." One might call it campy, but the material never really makes fun of itself - it is simply lighter than air, like a James Bond flick in which you root for the villain, because he's so much cooler than Bond ever was. And then there's the Ennio Moricone score that bounces and grooves. Good stuff. 8/10 |

Yojimbo is one of my all time favorites, and alongwith Sanjuro, Rashomon and Ran, ranks very high in my list. Kurosawa is one of my all time top 5 directors, because I love the way his characters bring intensity to the screen, and his beautiful use of camera work to add depth to his re-telling of the scripts makes me go weak in my knees. (Toshiro Mifune is one of my all time fav actors for that reason, if for no other) Quote:
Sounds great, Sean. Thanks for the recommendation. Will check this one out asap. |
The Hills Have Eyes 2
Well, overall it was pretty cool. Plenty of gore, decent acting, much cooler story than the original HHE2, but it had one major drawback... I just don't find anything remotely entertaining about rape scenes and this has a couple. C+ |
Lone Wolf McQuade (1983)
Looking for a mindless 80's action flick? You could do worse than this gem of spaghetti western-influenced chop sockey. Let's see, lots of guns? Check. Renegade cop on the edge? Check. A young and not-so-welcome partner? Check. A sweet young daughter in jeopardy? You got it. Training montage? fuck yeah. Oh, and this one stars Chuck Norris and David Carradine with the lovely Barbara Carrera as the femme fatale who'll screw you blue and then vacuum up afterward. Throw in a demented dwarf, a morricone-esgue soundtrack, stilted dialogue, a meandering plot and more roundhouse kicks than you can shake a stick at...good times! 8/10 |

Evening - uber-chick flick (give me a break, I had a date) Vanesa Redgrave was great, Claire Danes was serviceable. Overall, it would have been a good stage play, but was a fairly boring film!

Event Horizon
Hadn't viewed it since its theatrical release. Hated it then. Not sure why...maybe I was a bigger film snob in my youth. It still feels uneven and it doesn't have anything to say, but it's an enjoyable diversion. 6.9/10 |

House of 9
An unenthusiatic meh is about all I can offer this film. It never once manages to deliver something new or even make an attempt to break away from the middle of the horror movie pack. So what's worse, trying and failing or not trying at all and being nothing other than another mediocre horror film? |

Notes on a scandle:
Not bad, great performances, Weird interesting plot. Hoiwever, i am pretty much bored with "a day in the life of" movies, i dont care how bizarre that day (or week or whatever) may be Freedom Writers: Very much reminded me of Lean on Me, the made for tv movie with matthew perry, and a slew of other "he/she made a huge impact in some troubled teens' lives" movies. That being said, like pretty much all o fthe other ones, it was well done and thought provoking, basically a good watch The Devil's Backbone: Odd, creepy, interesting. very good. Climactic death of villain was VERY anti climactic, but the movie was great, and the brutality leading up to the death was great :) |

Brutal
I'll start by saying Michael Berryman did an absolutely AWESOME job of acting in this one. Aside from that it was a fairly original serial killer film, but the annoying sideplots got distracting after a while. It was brutal at times and the gore looked good, but it was also a bit slow moving at times. All in all, it was entertaining, but not fantastic and certainly not for everyone. C The Number 23 This movie started confusing, got more confusing and then almost completely lost me before finally trying to make some sense of things at the end. Jim Carrey does a fine job in a dramatic role, but the film itself just isn't that thrilling, which is kinda a key component of thrillers. Te sole reasons he's obsessed with the number 23 are kinda stupid to begin with. Who freaks out because a number rules their life? I don't know... This really didn't do it for me. Give me Dumber & Dumber or Cable Guy Jim Carrey over this one any day. C |
