You do understand that there is plenty of exploitation that is horror as well right? Would we have the same movies on both lists? How do you take an exploitation film and decide it doesn't belong on a horror list? The line becomes blurred, ESPECIALLY when you look at the definition of horror.

i've been on at least 5 major 'Horror' forums and have found that exploitation flicks were very muched discussed on every single one of them because the overlap in theme, atmosphere, and interest. It is undeniably entwined with 'pure horror' around our film sensibilities.

and nothing reflects this more than the asian market.

realistically .... with 'pure horror' - pure asian horror - even a top 50 would be pushing it ... the last 25 would be mediochre at best.

this is to be a list of films we use to recommend to each other - it might as well include all the films that horror fans would appreciate.

best suggestion yet

Yes... it's a fine suggestion... but can we please wait until we have all the lists in and see which movies are questionable based on genre before jumping to any conclusion? Is that possible? Everybody is so worked up over nothing, especially when you've seen the great recommendation lists that I've seen...

urgeok2 02-26-2009 08:47 AM

i'm not worked up.

Has V decided to pass this over to Neverending then?

No

Deadline for lists is March 1st and same for judge nominations. PM both to me before the 1st so we can get this up and running ASAP.

Once again, all nominations for judges AND movies MUST BE IN BY THE FIRST.

Of course. There would obviously be some overlap, but I think the majority could really be broken out. Not all exploitation is horror and vice versa. I know what the definition of horror is, but what is considered horror film is rather different as it's less subjective.

@Ferret
V gave it to Despare

i would say that horror is a subset of exploitation myself

Some of the films at least especially the trashier titles. I wouldn't consider the slick big studio titles like The Exorcist and The Omen exploitation.

I'm not sure if I necessarily agree that horror is a subset of exploitation per se, but I think that, at times, the two are inextricably bound (pun intended).

If we take a look at iconic horror movies like I Spit On Your Grave and Last House on the Left, for example, they are absolute exploitation flicks; which is exactly what makes them horror.

Miike himself, one of the more well-know Japanese directors within the (horror) genre excels at exploitation: Audition, Visitor Q, Ichi the Killer, Imprint; he uses exploitation and discomfort to create genuinely horrifying films.

i would think those are two of the best possible examples of exploitation

(depending on your definition of exploitation i guess)

i'm thinking along the lines as exploiting our baser emotions ...with over the top graphic violence.

in both these particular cases - religion is exploited for our enjoyment.

i suppose the real definition of exploitation suggests grittier more cheaply made quickie flicks - i guess i have a broader definition for myself.

_____V_____ 02-27-2009 05:49 AM

One example which will end this entire horror-exploitation debate...

Night of the Living Dead.

Despare 02-27-2009 01:33 PM

Just make sure you send me nominations of judges you think will be great for this project. I still hope Angra will accept to being a judge as I think he has a ton of knowledge in the genre and who knows, maybe he'll be able to convince the other judges about certain flicks...

I have 15 lists so far, keep em' coming.

Thats pretty much how I'd class an exploitation film. But I do see where your coming from in regards to The Exorcist and The Omen.

I think it's bullshit that we're adding exploitation movies to the horror list just because we haven't watched enough good asian horror movies to fill out a top 100.
Instead why not just settle with an asian horror top 50 compilation?
Or wait half a year with this list and let some of us asian horror nuts look for more good titles to add. I mean, what's the hurry?
We can always make a HDC Asian exploitation top 20/30/40whatever compilation.

Actually, I think Angra brings up a really good point. Obviously most people here don't watch as much Asian horror to come up with 100 movies, so I think narrowing it down to only 50 is a good idea instead of trying to include it with exploitation.
I also think maybe doing a separate exploitation would be a good idea, I could probably come up with more exploitation than horror for asia. Plus this would be better than trying to force them together. Not everyone who is looking at a horror list may want to see a bunch of exploitation there and vice versa.

Good idea indeed. :)

Personally I have no objection to consider exploitation/drama/thriller/revenge films as a Horror as long they have at least some kinda appeal to be a Horror film or have enough potentiality to be a part of the international horror premises; though I'm not recommending any exploitation movies.

BUT, I here eagerly requesting to name the title of this list as only "Horror" like it was before...The HDC Top 100 Asian Horror.

My list is almost complete, I'll send it within few hours to Des.

roshiq 03-01-2009 09:35 AM

I have already sent my list to Des.

But I like to recommend some other movies that I haven't seen yet but read some pretty good reviews and ratings on different movie sites that I think may have the quality & potentiality to be enlisted in this Top 100 somewhere:

A page of madness (1926)
Ugestu Mongatari (1953)
Jigoku (1960)
Matango (1963)
Woman in the Dunes (1964)
A Chinese ghost story (1987)
Evil Dead Trap (1988)
Men behind the sun (1988)
Tetsuo, the Iron Man (1989)
The Untold Story (1993)
Nang Nak (1995)
Cure (1997)
Tell me something (1999)
Séance (2000)
Uzumaki (2000)
Ichi the killer (2001)
Sorum (2001)
Visitor Q (2001)
H (2002)
Phone (2002)
Acacia (2003)
The Echo (2004)
The Eye 2 (2004)
R-Point (2004)
Neighbor No. 13 (2005)
Noriko's Dinner Table (2005)
Rampo Noir
Voice (2005)
The Wig (2005)
Re Cycle (2006)
Imprint (2006)
Silk (2006)
Black House (2007)
Carved (2007)
The Cut (2007)
Muoi (2007)

Despare 03-02-2009 08:33 AM

Just an update, I'll have a compiled list up in a few days, and we'll talk about judges then as well. :)

Despare 03-05-2009 04:30 AM

Alright, quick update, I'll have a list of (possible) judges up on Sunday along with a list to PM them if they accept. I've gone through all the lists and counted the number of votes for movies nominated multiple times. I do need anybody who suggested Wicked City to PM me (except Zwoti who was clear) and tell me if they meant live action or anime. Thanks!

EDIT: Little Otik is Czech and not Asian. :)

Another EDIT: 232 movie nominations.

Despare 03-07-2009 09:50 AM

Let's face it, nobody has seen all of the nominated flicks, that's why we need a good group of judges with varied knowledge. I think you guys nominated the perfect crew. Provided they accept, here are your judges.

Angra
Chronogirl
Roshiq (accepted)
Papillon Noir (accepted)
Zwoti
The Flayed One (accepted)
Despare (accepted)

ChronoGrl 03-08-2009 11:27 AM

Granted nobody has seen them all, but I really think that I'm honestly lacking. :( I don't think that I have enough of a frame of knowledge in Asian Horror for judgeship.

I think you do, and so do the folks who voted for you. We need a Miike guide after all.

roshiq 03-09-2009 06:56 AM

I'll be happy to be a part of this selection process at any level. As a good fan of Asian Horror films it's a great honor for me to get nominated as a 'judge' in this awesome HDC project.:)

Seems like our host has become more busy with stuff to follow this project up, so if Despare has no objection, I would like to take over the reins again.

And a request to all judges - Despare, Flayed, Noir & Roshiq - to pop up in our "discussion forum" at the Bomb Shelter and put in your latest inputs.

We need to finalise things asap, and get the 100 released.

Papillon Noir 06-09-2009 06:00 AM

Oh, yeah. I totally forgot about this. It's really been awhile.

I was actually waiting until the BR2 was over to see... what happened. I'll be on a little more and tomorrow I will get in touch with everybody.

scouse mac 06-10-2009 08:37 AM

After reading many, many reviews in the Asian horror section, I think psycho d should be in on the judging.

_____V_____ 09-29-2009 10:08 PM

Now that the sticky is up, you folks know what I want.

Yep, correct...

BLURB WRITERS!!

I am looking at - Despare, Chronogrl, Psycho d, Angra, Papillon Noir, Roshiq, Neverending and The Flayed One. Even Zwoti, if he can spare some time.

And anybody else who is interested...check out the list and pick your favorites to write a short blurb on it. PM me your blurbs asap.

_____V_____ 10-02-2009 11:08 AM

Thanks for the wonderful blurbs on Alone and Ju-On, Roshiq.

Come on people, let's see those blurbs for your favorite Asian flicks!

roshiq 10-02-2009 10:58 PM

I'll send some more later. :)

neverending 10-02-2009 11:43 PM

Bad timing for me. Pretty busy this month.

_____V_____ 10-03-2009 09:32 AM

No worries. You might chip in with some blurbs when you are more free after the end of this month, NE.

And thanks for the wonderfully written blurbs on Cure and Noriko's Dinner Table, Psycho d. I urge you to write some more. You have a talent of writing a pretty effective blurb. :)

_____V_____ 10-03-2009 06:53 PM

I hope he comes in and does some blurbs too.

Posted your Izo and Buppah Rahtree blurbs. Keep going, bud!

_____V_____ 10-05-2009 08:53 AM

Posted yet another couple blurbs from Psycho d. Thanks again and keep going, bud!

Come on, folks! Stop slacking and get around to writing some blurbs! Do you want Psycho d and Roshiq to write all 100 of em, including the ones for YOUR favorite movies? :p

Give yourselves a nice kick in the ass and stop slacking! Send me your blurbs asap!!

_____V_____ 10-06-2009 07:49 PM

Received two wonderful blurbs on Spooky Encounters and Mr Vampire from Straker. Both have been posted.

_____V_____ 10-14-2009 03:39 AM

Been receiving plenty of blurbs from Psycho_d, and posting them duly.

But both me and Psycho_d agree that if the whole list is dotted with his blurbs ONLY, it would look monotonous and lop-sided like a half-cooked pie.

Dont you agree, you slacking bastards? :p

Come on, REQUEST A BLURB ASAP! :D
