Wow - I can't believe I've waited so long to see this movie... The claymation monsters are AWESOME.

Also - If I had seen it when I was younger I probably would have found it pretty scary (or at least enjoyed it as much as I did stuff like Little Monsters).

ALSO: The scene where the demon reaches out from under the bed and grabs her foot... I TOTALLY saw that seen when I was younger - just that scene and for a while I would run quickly when I was in front of beds and couches so that a hand wouldn't grab me... I've always wondered what movie that was from. Huh.

Did you like it? Trick or Treat was pretty cool too for the whole heavy metal 80s horror flick.

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Can't believe that I waited so long to watch it. Based on the fact that it's an inside joke around here, I was expecting the movie to be simply awful, but it was a blast - I LOVED the claymation demons and the special effects. DEFINITELY cheesy, but that was part of the charm. Plus it was more gory than I expected, especially since our heroes are kids. If I had seen it when I was younger, it definitely would have scared me. I would watch it again and recommend to people... Is this the Trick or Treat that you're talking about? I'll have to check it out.

I saw Marcus Nispel's Frankenstein on there. Good visuals, but dull pace.

They have some pretty good stuff On Demand right now...
  • [rec] (2007) (though - baha - the description says "from the people who brought you Quarantine") - It's the Spanish infection film that everyone's been talking about!
  • May (2002) - One of my favorite indie horror flicks ever. Fantastic character piece. Tortured and awesome.
  • Ju-On (The Grudge) (2002) - The iconic Japanese original
  • The Cottage (2008) - From the makers of Severance, here is another British horror comedy, but definitely more subtle and favored more by people around here - I liked it and will most likely be checking it out
  • Jaws, Jaws II, and Jaws III - They really need no introduction
  • Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) (1997) - The Spanish original that inspired the insipid Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise... Definitely quite a bit better, though if I recall the plot rambles a bit and the "point" loses a bit of its intended punch
  • The Sixth Sense (1999)

And even three of my Horrorfest Faves (all of which I've recommended here before)

I thought Dead Set was really good. Nice to see it getting screened in a few more places I was thinking it was just going to disappear.

Damn! I bought the dvd months ago & put it on a box with some other dvds and still haven't seen it! Thanks for the reminder, definitely going to watch it this weekend for sure.

Dead Set looks sick!

neverending 11-23-2010 03:07 AM

Watched a couple of episodes tonight and they were very good. These are the "fast zombie" type, while the Walking Dead feature the more traditional "slow zombies."

Interesting contrasts.

Elvis_Christ 11-23-2010 10:31 PM

Think I may rewatch that series before I start on The Walking Dead.

Glad you like it! It definitely sets a different tone than Walking Dead. With WD you feel as though you're watching a TV show (not that that's a bad thing) - you have a lot of character development and back story. With Dead Set, it's more of just a long movie (if that makes sense) - Not as much character development, faster paced, but still definitely enjoyable. I actually think the mini series is a really good vehicle because it allows you to do a longer movie in a way.

It is an interesting contrast - both shows are trying to do something different in terms of bringing zombies to television.

I'd be interested to see what you think of The Walking Dead - Have you read the comics?

Elvis_Christ 11-24-2010 06:30 PM

I've read a few of them but not the series in it's entirety. Plan on getting up to speed with the first four episodes over the weekend so I'll let you know.

That's interesting because I would draw the parallels in exactly the opposite way. Dead Set seems more "TVish" to me because it's more over the top, the characterizations are broader, the script is cheesier... while Walking Dead seems more cinematic to me because of the higher production values, the better writing, more subtle acting, etc.

Fearnet>Extras>Shorts>Last Meal

A very well done short film set in a small town diner that serves meals based on murderer's last meals. Clever, well directed, acting decent, good effects on a small budget.

Check it out!

Awesome! I'll check it out tonight - Thanks! :)

Watched Last Meal last night - I second NE - Great intense little short film. Recommended. Acting is spotty at times, but easy to get beyond.

ChronoGrl 01-16-2012 05:08 PM

Just watched the ScyFy show "Face Off" last night. It's a reality show contest wherein makeup special effects artists compete - Ridiculously cool to see them do monster makeup from mold to paint to costumes.

NE/HF/Newb and anyone else on here with Comcast should check it out.
