Stunning, with a really powerful ending. Watch it. |
The Fallen Idol (1948)
http://daily.greencine.com/archives/...-idol-150l.jpg Carol Reed (The Third Man) directs this Hitchcockian thriller with delicate hands and a careful eye, hiding chilling treasures in rewarding places. Told through the eyes of a child, a murder-mystery unfolds with strange realism in a setting where the actual murder is the least of the issues and begins to unpeel the innocence of a young boy as he is taught lessons of imperfection and horror in forceful precision. Highly recommended. |

Stuck
Stuart Gordon is an amazing director, his last few films King Of The Ants and Edmond really impressed me but this tops them. A very dark film and one of the best I've seen this year. If you dug Before The Devil Knows You're Dead this will be right up your alley. Masterful American cinema. See it A.S.A.P http://www.spacejunk.org/spacejunk/w...ucktrailer.jpg www.youtube.com/watch?v=wREl4FKtSN8 www.imdb.com/title/tt0758786/ |
Bad Boys
One of Sean Penn's best performances. This is a killer teen crime/prison flick that gets overlooked these days. Gritty, well written with a really great cast including Ally Sheedy. Rick Rosenthal directed Halloween II which is my personal favorite of the sequels. He also the directed worst (Halloween: Resurrection) but don't let that put you off. Like I said earlier this is KILLER! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg www.imdb.com/title/tt0085210/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2gWfPiEA7o |
Manson
Laurence Merrick and Robert Hendrickson's 1973 documentary is a chilling account of the Manson murders. It gives a insight to "The Family" that's every bit as creepy as a horror film. One of the most fascinating documentaries I've seen. This is most definitive chronicle of Manson you'll get. Essential! http://mtceuropavideo.com/manson.jpghttp:// http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068918/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jm9cjrwBIdM |
speaking of manson, i'd like to recommend jim vanbebber's
the manson family (2003) gritty, harrowing, and original take on one of the most explored subjects of the 1960s-70s. |

Inglorious Bastards
Gimme this one over The Dirty Dozen or Kelly's Heroes it's way more fun. See this one before the bastardized Tarantino version thats on the cards. A beer n' pizza flick for sure! A damn good action packed ride with some really memorable characters and naked chicks shooting machine guns  http://www.popcritics.com/wp-content...s-bastards.jpg www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cGaYDwpXf4 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076584/ |
wow that looks awesome, thanks for the recommendation!

Tenement (aka Game Of Survival)
A great nasty minded and violent 80s gang flick revolving around tenants in a Bronx apartment building being attacked by gang who were arrested and kicked out of their building. A mix of Death Wish 3, Assault on Precinct 13 and Street Trash this is essential viewing for fans of 80s exploitation cinema. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...-man/tena3.gif www.imdb.com/title/tt0090145/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kcz2WZLyhY |

Savage Streets
One of the best revenge flicks ever! Starring Linda Blair and Linnea Quigley this is one of my favorite 80s trashfests. If you dug Class Of 1984 you've gotta see this one. I can't wait to get my hands on the 2 Disc edition that was released by Navarre a couple of days ago. This shit's classic and I'm glad finally got a decent looking release. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...E20STREETS.jpg www.imdb.com/title/tt0088044/ www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9q5GzmpAyg |
savage streets has been advertised at the top of the forum for a while now ... wouldnt mind getting a copy as well

I know people are probably getting tired of me waving its banner, but please...
PLEASE PLEASE watch Exorcist III if you've never seen it. It's my personal favorite movie of all time and has some of the creepiest moments I've ever seen in a movie. You can usually find it in a bargain bin for about $5, which is cheaper than you can rent it a lot of places. Give it a go. I don't think you'll be disappointed. |
I second The Inglorious Bastards, Savage Streets and The Exorcist III recommendations.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...VL._SS500_.gif All 3 are must-watches, IMO. Give those 3 a spin already, people. |
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. Funny, essential grindhouse in the same vein as the Gore Gore Girls.

i highly, highly recommend (and i'm pretty sure elvis will second me here):
santa sangre (1989) http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...nta-sangre.jpg it can be kind of hard to find, especially in the states, but it's worth the search. such a maddening, whimsical, gorgeous mess. |

... and yeh The Exorcist III is essential viewing too I dig it a lot. I've been wanting to check out Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers for awhile now. I'll grab a copy as soon as I come across one. Fred Olen Ray is one prolific motherfucker! |
I'm kind of torn on Alejandro Jodorowsky's stuff...is Santa Sangre more akin to El Topo, or is it closer to Holy Mountain?
I absolutely LOVED El Topo, but couldn't even finish watching Holy Mountain. |
It's more like El Topo.

While we're on the Jodorowsky topic - have you guys seen La Cravate?
It's his first movie and only 20 minutes long, but I thought it was fantastic. If you like his work, you have to check it out - you can get it in the Anchor Bay set that they put out awhile back. |

i should just get the boxset. holy mountain was a little tough for me to get through, too, but with el topo, la cravate, and all the extras, it'd be worth it i think. |
Had my eyes on the boxset with all the soundtracks included for awhile but I've got most of the films seperatley so I'd rather grab something I don't have instead. Great looking set anyways.
|
Fando y Lis is cool, too - you guys seen it?
It's not really on par with El Topo - for me, at least - but if you like his stuff, its worthwhile for sure. Black and white suits him well. |
If you're looking for a sociologically relevant, intellectual film... try Blindness (2008).

Toy Soldiers
A great cast makes this Stand By Me meets Die Hard film really work. I dug this one as a kid and picked up a copy recently and it still kicks ass. Louis Gosset Jr, R. Lee Emery and Denholm Elliot are solid. Andrew Divoff is great as the villain (just like in Another 48 Hrs). This film has great pacing and doesn't drag and pulls off the multi-genre spliceup with class because of its tight well written script. But more importantly this film is a lot of fun. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...y_Soldiers.jpg www.imdb.com/title/tt0103112/ |
