Latest western watched:
"Hang 'Em High" Great movie |
I really wasnt too huge a fan of Hang Em High. There was maybe only one good action scene in the whole movie, and it was a quickdraw scene, meaning it was extremely brief.
|
Gonna watch The Proposition tonight. Its the best modern western to come out in a long time. Looking foward to checking it out again.

I really enjoyed The Wild Bunch (69) I watched it about a month ago and it kept my interest throughout it all.

The Big Country.
What an amazing movie. Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Jean Smart, Chuck Connors and Burl Ives who won best supporting actor Oscar. A great literate script, great direction, beautiful cinematography of the American desert and one of the best theme songs ever. Highly recommended. |
"Day Of The Evil Gun" (1968)
-Glenn Ford A gunman, who abandoned his wife and daughters, returns home to find out they have been kidnapped by Apaches. He then reluctantly teams up with his wife's new fiancee to rescue them. Made on a modest budget, this is still a highly entertaining film. Good acting. plot and action. |
"Gold Of The Seven Saints" (1961)
-Clint Walker, Roger Moore Film Synopsis: IMDB Fur-trapper Shawn Garrett gets out of a horse-stealing charge in a small, frontier town by agreeing to buy the horse with a gold nugget. This nugget attracts the attention of a man named McCracken who, with his gang, secretly follows Garrett across the desert in the hope of finding the source of his gold. Garrett joins up with his partner, Jim Rainbolt, and together they manage to hold off McCracken's gang long enough to hide their gold before seeking refuge in the hacienda of a landowner named Gondora. Gondora soon finds out about the gold, however, and Rainbolt and Garrett now find themselves in a fight to save their gold and their lives as well. Phantoms Review: Standard "B" western. Most of the film takes place in the dessert and just shows the stars trekking across the sands running from the bad guys. Nothing very exciting. A couple of okay shoot out scenes, but nothing great. My biggest complaint is that Roger Moore's character is supposed to be Irish, but Moore can never hold on to an Irish accent. Overall. a forgettable film. |
"Five Guns West" (1955)
-John Lund, Mike (Touch) Conners Synopsis: IMDB During the Civil War, five condemned Southern prisoners are plucked off Death Row and promised pardons on the condition that they undertake a mission to head west and bring back a double-crossing Confederate spy who has a stagecoach full of Confederate gold. Phantom's Review: Wow! What a boring movie. Short on action and long on talk, problem is they don't say much of anything. A dull film all the way. |
"The Tall Stranger" (1957)
-Joel McCrea, Virginia Mayo Synopsis: IMDB Ned Bannon comes across rustlers and is shot and left for dead, but is found in time by a wagon train heading for California. When he recovers he becomes suspicious of the two outsiders who are leading the train into a dead-end valley owned by his hostile half-brother. Braving his relative's animosity going back to the Civil War, Bannon makes contact to try and avoid a showdown. Phantom's Review: Finally, after a couple of dud westerns, I get to see a good movie. Plenty of action and a good story (based on a fine Louis L'Amour novel) I enjoyed this film. |
"Billy The Kid" (1941)
-Robert Taylor Highly fictionalized, Highly romanticized look at the Kid's life and the Lincoln County Wars. There is about half a teaspoon of fact in this film and the rest is Hollywood B.S... but surprisingly it's not a bad movie at all. Just a fun, enjoyable western. The only major problem I had with the film is that star Robert Taylor was about 30 years old when he played "The Kid" but he does a good job. |
"The Law vs Billy The Kid" (1954)
- Scott Brady Yet another look at the life of Billy and the Lincoln County Wars. Unlike the 1941 film (with Robert Taylor) this film gets a few of the historical facts right, but for the most part it's just another low budget action film. Like the 1941 film this movie has a Billy who looks to about 30 years old. Not much of a "Kid". Plenty of western action, an okay story and some decent acting. Watchable, but forgettable. (Holy Shit ! This is my 1000th post!) |
Hah- congrats on your thousand mark, PS!
|
"South Of Heaven, West Of Hell" (2000)
-Dwight Yokam Absolutely one of the worst western films I have ever seen. Boring, badly acted, foul mouthed and makes no sense at all. Other then some beautiful scenery, this film is a complete waste of time. |
"Monte Walsh" (1970)
-Lee Marvin, Jack Palance IMDB:An aging cowboy realizes that the West he knew and loved will soon be no more--and that there will be no room for him, either Phantom's Review: Well written and very well acted character study, While this film is light on action it more than makes up for it with excellent performances by it's stars. A fine film. (The Tom Selleck remake is pretty good too.) |
Wagon Master" (1950)
- Ben Johnson, Harry Carrey jr. Ward Bond Plot Synopsis: IMDB: A group of Mormons hoping to found a new colony in the trackless San Juan River country hire horse traders Travis and Sandy as wagonmaster and guide. One attraction for Sandy is "redheaded gal" Prudence. Soon they're joined by Doc Hall's broken down medicine show, with "scarlet women" Denver and Fleuretty. Then the Clegg boys, slightly psycho outlaws, decide a Mormon wagon train will make ideal camouflage. Phantom's Review: While not one of John Ford's classics, this is still an entertaining little movie. Nice performances by stars Johnson and Carrey Jr, and a terrific job by the great Ward Bond. Plenty of action and fun. "Gunsmoke" fans may want to see this film to see a very young James Arness as one of the villains. |
"Appaloosa"(2008)
-Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen Plot Synopsis: IMDB New Mexico.Territory.1882. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are itinerant lawmen, hired by desperate towns as marshal and deputy. The city fathers of Appaloosa hire them after Randall Bragg, a newly-arrived rancher with money and a gang of thugs, disrupts commerce and kills three local lawmen. Cole and Hitch contrive to arrest Bragg and bring him to trial, but hanging him proves difficult. Meanwhile, a widow has arrived in town, Allison French, pretty, refined, and good-natured. Virgil falls hard, and it seems mutual, but there may be more to Allie than meets the eye. Phantom's Review: I loved this movie ! Great acting from all the stars, beautifully filmed and a nice balance of action and humor. A wonderful western. |

Fun film...too bad scrunch-face had to be in it |
Anybody seen Roy Colt and Winchester Jack?
|
"Saddle The Wind" (1958)
-Robert Taylor Plot Synopsis: IMDB Steve Sinclair (Robert Taylor) is a world a world-weary former gunslinger, now living as a peaceful cattle rancher. Things go wrong when his wild younger brother Tony (John Cassavetes) arrives on the scene with his new fiancee, a former saloon girl named Joan Blake (Julie London) and a tricked up six shooter. Phantoms Review: Even thought the plot is not that original, this is a well made and very well acted film. Some good action and scenery and an enjoyable screenplay by Rod Serling. |
"Curse Of The Undead" (1959)
- Micheal Pate Plot Synopsis: IMDB The cinema's first vampire Western! Young women in a small Western town are dying one by one of an unknown malady involving massive blood loss. The Carter family's ranch is being terrorized by ruthless land baron Buffer. And a mysterious black-clad gunfighter with an aversion to sunlight has just arrived in town Phantom's Review: I've always been a fan of both westerns and horror movies, (especially the classic black and white movies)and on those rare occasions that someone tries to combine the two always interests me. While this is basically a standard "B" movie. It has some very nice performances from the actors and it maintains, both, a great horror atmosphere (with some cool spooky music)and some classic western action. If you don't take it to seriously, this is a fun movie. |
"Trooper Hook" (1957)
- Joel McCrea. Barbra Stanwyck Plot Synopsis: IMDB After a band of Indians kill a group of soldiers, Sergeant Hook captures them and their leader Nanches. Among the prisoners is Nanches' son and the boy's white mother captured by them nine years earlier. Hook's assignment is to escort the mother and son to the woman's husband. Traveling by stagecoach they learn that Nanches has escaped and it's not long before he and his warriors show up intent on reclaiming the boy. Phantom's Review: Well acted, but standard western adventure. Plenty of action and some good performances, but overall, nothing memorable. |
Santee" (1973)
-Glen Ford Plot Synopsis: IMDB Jody Deakes joins up with his father after many years, only to discover that his dad is part of an outlaw gang on the run from a relentless bounty hunter named Santee. Jody is orphaned soon after Santee catches up to the gang, and follows Santee in hopes of taking vengeance for his father's death. Instead, however, Jody discovers that Santee is a good and loving man, tormented by the death of his young son at the hands of another outlaw gang. Santee and his wife take Jody in and a father-son relationship begins to grow. Then the gang that killed Santee's son shows up. Phantom's Review: Glen Ford was one of the best western actors, but "Santee" was not one of his better pictures. Some decent action, but overall the film is kind of dull. |
"Border Patrol" (1943)
- William Boyd "Hopalong" Cassidy and his pals Johnny and "California", working as Texas Rangers, set out to find how twenty five Mexicans have disappeared after being hired by the "Silver Bullet" mines. They ride into town and find the mine owner is one man government. He arrests them on trumped up charges and theyre tried before a kangaroo court. Phantom's Review: What can I say, It's "Hopalong" Cassidy ! Plot is simple, action is great and has some good doses of humor. A great Saturday Morning Matinee movie. |

"The Man From Del Rio" (1956)
- Anthony Quinn, Katy Jurado Dave Robles, a Mexican gunfighter passing through the town of Mesa out draws and kills a famous outlaw. He's then invited by a former gunfighter turned saloon owner named Barrister to join a gang he's forming and take over the town. Instead Robles takes the job as Sheriff and becomes Barrister's enemy. Phantom's review: A very well acted little movie. Light on action, but has a good story and is an interesting character study. Watch for legendary character actor Whit Bissell as the town drunk. He steals every scene he's in. |
"Gunfight At Comanche Creek"
- Audie Murphy, DeForest Kelley Plot :IMDB Comanche Creek, Colorado, 1875: Prisoner Jack Mason is broken out of jail by a gang of strangers. They use him in a robbery, then when the dead-or-alive reward is high enough, they shoot him and collect. The National Detective Agency, now knowing the gang's methods, arranges to have agent Bob Gifford jailed in Comanche Creek for train robbery. The gang takes the bait (not before Gifford catches the eye of lovely saloon-keeper Abbie) and Gifford goes undercover to try and stop the bad guys. Phantom's Review: Decent "B" western with some good action and an interesting story. Best part of the movie: Deforest Kelley (of "Star Trek" fame) as a ruthless cold hearted S.O.B. Makes you totally forget kind "Dr. McCoy" Annoying part of the film: A narrator. It's almost like the film was written as a radio show and then switched to the movies. Completely unneeded. __________________ |
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Dances w/ Wolves (1990) Unforgiven (1992) Tombstone (1993) -SPFXMasks |
No, I haven't had time to catch up on all the thread, but here's a few quick offerings.
THE WILD BUNCH. There can only be one. And this may be my favorite. Simultaneously about blood, vengeance, loyalty, fraternal love, respect and violence for the sake of violence, this is a stone cold classic, towering above others in the field. THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. Huge and epic but with the smallest of human motives at its heart, there's humor and grimness aplenty to be found. THE ROAD WARRIOR. Go ahead, prove to me that it isn't a western in anything but setting. Total western, as good as they come. |
Coen Brothers' Next is True Grit
Source: Variety March 23, 2009 Joel and Ethan Coen will next put their spin on True Grit, the iconic Western that won John Wayne an Oscar. The Paramount film will be more faithful to the Charles Portis book than the 1969 pic, also distributed by Paramount. Portis' novel is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father's killer in hostile Indian territory. But while the original film was a showcase for Wayne, the Coens' version will tell the tale from the girl's point of view. The project reteams the brothers with Scott Rudin, their partner on the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men. The Coens wrote the screenplay. The original starred Kim Darby as the teen, Wayne and Glen Campbell as the lawmen, Jeff Corey as the killer and featured Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper as fellow outlaws. |

DJANGO!!!!! This movie must be seen to be believed. Made in 1966 it's bloodier by far than anything Hammer Studios was putting out at the time.
The setting is a stunning mud covered apocalyptic ghost town. The main character stomps around dragging a coffin like an extra from Un Chien Andalou. The bad guys ride around in bizaar bright red hoods and scarves (why? who cares, they look wild against the stark backgrounds). The deep focus photography is stunning. I would love to own some stills from this flick. The dialogue and dubbing are absolutely terrible.....but it doesn't matter. It's all about surreal imagery and violence (mud and blood). This movie has to be Quinton Tarrantino's wet dream. A Must See for any Horror Fan. The Blue Underground Disc is terrific. Highly recommended. |
"Where The Hell's That Gold ??!!??"
-Willie Nelson, Jack Elam Plot: IMDB On the run after stealing and hiding a large amount of gold, two outlaws find themselves travelling through 1895 Mexico on a train full of dynamite as rebels. Apache Indians, Wells Fargo agents, and Federal troops trail them. When they are captured by the Mexican authorities, they scheme to keep their ill-gotten riches with the help of a sassy madam and her prostitutes... Phantoms Review: Well acted, but dull. Great chemistry between Nelson and Elam and Delta Burke as the Madame is fine, but the movie just doesn't have what it takes to be a really entertaining film. |
just watched The Big Silence aka The Great Silence (1968):
a classic spaggeti western from Sergio Corbucci......my take is, Corbucci is to Leone as Fulci is to Argento. Everything is a bit sloppier and more extreme. The atmosphere and mood is everything here. Grim and cold are the impressions this flick leaves you with. If Django is blood in the mud....this gem of movie is blood in the snow. Klaus Kinski is terrific as the sadistic bad guy. Definitely a movie worth checking out!!! |
Django Kill (If You Live Shoot!) 1967 ...spagetti western just too fucking weird for words.......certainly bloody, certainly homoerotic, and certainly insane. I'll give it 3 stars (out of five) for jaw dropping nerve.
