The only 2 mods that I've dealt with as moderators are Rayne and zwoti. I've talked to kpro too, but not as a moderator, and I don't know allmykids at all. But you all seem fair. When in doubt, I would say contact the person in question and find out what the story is. It may just be an unintenional or mindless mistake. We all want to talk freely here, so if there is a question in someone's behavior, just ask them about it. and tell them to knock it off if necessary. PEACE!

Have we come up with a final 10 sentence conclusion yet?

There has been a lot of good ideas here and I agree, it's a tough call. One thing I would like to suggest, and I have seen it happen, is if someone is about to get banned, give them a warning. They may really not know what they did or said was over the line. And if it's a group of people having some fun and a mod having a bad day or taking what is being said in the wrong way, then we can explain and/or defend our actions
Indeed, since those of us who have been previously banned with no explanation should be at least given advice that it might be down to our mere presence or persistence in a debate since we do not fire off personal derogatory remarks or defamation in any shape or form (unless we're clearly, obviously joking).

I wonder if someone can be banned purely through mods bowing to pressure in light of complaints received through PM? If so, are the complaints justified... or possibly overreaction/misinterpretation?

Censorship won't do, especially in a horror film website.

ISP bans would seem the logical option to stop the trouble returning.

And I agree anyone christened 'Roderick' just has to be an asshole.

:D

BloodRedFlower 08-10-2006 06:02 AM

The term "maliciously insult" is subjective, so.. that rule is innadequate. What is "malicious" to some, may be funny and insignificant to others.

You should be discussing the RULES, not the banning of that guy.

Make a decent set of rules and then decide who to ban. Based on that rule, I simply cannot decide whose "side" I'm in. It's impossible... I'd have to consider the "malice" on his comment based on their entire history as members... impossible.

its a tough subject especially b/c we communicate through text and not voice. i make a sarcastic remark in a message and the person on the other end could take it very personal b/c the tone in my head might not translate into what i type. as far as this goes its too hard to mediate insults unless they are one, blatantly obvious; person1: "i think that scream is the best horror movie ever." person2: "you are a fucking moron and i would kill and rape your family if i saw them in the street... and your dog too." two, turn an otherwise interesting thread ugly: one person is debating a subject w/ another and conversation goes from constructive criticism to calling each other out. and three, not an insult so much but a hi-jacking of a thread (kinda like what cheeba did).

So basically people need to develop a tough skin as far as the rips go... Only when it get's ugly (in every meaning of the word) should the moderators step in.

That's a shitty excuse...If you're having a problem at home in your real world life, keep it THERE...Kick your dog or shoot your boss, but don't come here and kick US...That goes ESPECIALLY for Moderators....Being drunk is no excuse either...A couple of years ago I posted on this forum after I came home from the club (twice, actually), and I didn't ban anyone, nor did I start any shit...I doubt that I would have had the ability to perform the functions involved in banning someone even if I had WANTED to....And, why would I want to start any shit?...I was feeling pretty damned good ;)

I really wish that I could help you with that...I can only tell you that Zwoti and I have never banned/would never ban anyone under those circumstances...And I still think of ALL the bullshit that has EVER gone on here, that was the absolute worst, and most uncalled for...When people who can't control THEMSELVES are given any type of control on a forum, stupid shit happens...You also have to consider the 'dishonesty' factor....If the mod who did that would have AT LEAST had the balls to say something like "Oops, I fucked up because I don't really know what the hell I'm doing"..."Well, I'm just an asshole and figured I could do whatever I wanted"..."I just didn't like that person"...Or give SOME explanation, it wouldn't have been quite AS bad...Liars piss me off....I'm gonna end this one right here before I say things I shouldn't...

Oh...That HAS happened, in the past....But, NOT with me...That's bullshit, too...You HAVE to know what's going on, check out the situation and get both sides of the story...You CANNOT just say, "Okay who do you want me to ban?"...That makes me want to puke...I HATE puppets

The request for banning someone was the catalyst that led to this thread which is to discuss a way to better define THE RULES...This thread wasn't really about whether or not someone should be banned...But, about what should be considered a 'bannable offense' and whether his comment would have been considered such...

I have to agree with that, too...

But...I'd add that racist remarks and pornography are dealt with (removed) immediately...No discussion...

AUSTIN316426808 08-10-2006 08:42 AM

You ever notice Return, Alky, massacre man, mothman and other members who are still kids hardly, if at all agrgue. Sure there's some small bickering here and there about a movie or small disagreement but nothing as serious as the big fights or long term grudges that the adults take part in.

Vodstok 08-10-2006 08:45 AM

A lot of "kids" are usually very mature. it takes being an adult to hone the fine art of asshole.

Believe me, I HAVE noticed...It just makes it that much more pathetic when the adults do it

The best ones are where the KIDS are trying to get the "adults" to stop it....

Yes, us "kids" are mature. :p

Technically though, being that I'm 17, I'm recognized by my state as an adult, so I feel special. :D

In that case:

I think you should come up with a no-insult policy like... three strikes and you're out. On the first and second insult (be it serious or a "joke") the person would get a warning. On the third, get banned.

I don't see the point of insulting users at Forums, or even making nasty jokes about someone. Those who do it should definatelly be banned. We're here with the common goal of talking about Horror (and the facts of life occasionally :P), those who don't share this goal and just want to act childish or pick a fight should go somewhere else.

I understand your point...But, you gotta be realistic...

I mean, if we wanna tell someone "Hey, you're being a dick, knock it off"...We should be able to

Or...What if someone tells us a funny story about how they wimped out on something...like a horror movie or a roller coaster ride, or something...Shouldn't we be able to say, "Man, you're such a pussy"?

I mean seriously...We insult each other here CONSTANTLY...You don't do that with your friends and family in real life?....It USUALLY isn't perceived as a malicious attack...

This place wouldn't even be the same anymore...And...We would have no members left

This is a horror forum...We've ALL watched the movies and heard the language on a regular basis...This isn't Disney...

Vodstok 08-10-2006 11:10 AM

Okay, lets clear this whole thing up:

the "It Stops Now" thread will be left up as a guideline, no more, no less. Every incident will be taken on a case by case basis, with banning being meeted out by mods as they see necessary.

So Sayeth the spider.

In that case, the best thing is to analyse each case individually, like the guy riding the pig over there said.

So...Pretty much...Just keep doing things the way we HAVE been doing them...

With the new added stipulation of:

Okay...After all of this...Here are my overall suggestions (Thanks Vod and Hammerfan)

PLEASE consider WHO you are speaking to when you make a statement, and whether or not they may respond negatively to it.....If you KNOW that the comment you intend to make WILL create a war with someone, do NOT make that comment to (or about) that person....

Some people can handle it...Some people will play along with you...Some people will hit you right back in a funny, or intelligent way...And some may hit back with the same force you give them, and THEN...let...it...go

But...Some people just have to be left alone

So, pretty much, if you know you are going to cause a shitstorm...You are fucking up...Just stop

If you throw a rock at a Poodle, it will most likely yap and whimper...But, if you throw a rock at a Rottweiler, chances are you may be eaten....So, we choose not to throw the rock...We should be intelliigent enough to figure this out...

Fair enough?

Vodstok 08-10-2006 11:25 AM

Rayne has done this and knows it feels GOOD to give to Vod, so send me some cash. no checks please, money orders are fine.

Okee dokee, but I have heard stories from other members of a moderator going on a banning spree when he was either in a really bad mood or drunk. So the moderators, as you have basically said, need to make sure they live up to their own standards. And give people fucking break and warn them if they're about to get banned. Christ, how hard is that???

Please excuse my shitty editing, didn't turn out as I thought it would and I don't really feel like fixing it. :)
