Let me do it then.....

Eh???EH???

noctuary 07-01-2006 04:49 AM

Hmmm... so far, so good. I'm a little surprised that Army of Darkness wasn't higher on the list. It's my least favorite of the Evil Dead trilogy, but everyone seems to love it.

Keep up the good work, Flayed.

Zero 07-01-2006 05:44 AM

perhaps after the list is complete some of us could volunteer to fill in the gaps for the blurbs (i, for one, would love to write the one for Manhunter and perhaps a few others). . . love the list so far and think that the vast majority of blubs are amazing. . . can't wait to see the final 10!!!!

AUSTIN316426808 07-01-2006 05:47 AM

Besided one serious problem, I think it's turning out well.

The Flayed One 07-01-2006 06:05 AM

BTW, this is hectic work, so if a entry appears that you wrote the blurb for without the blurb, feel free to send a friendly pm saying 'Hey fucker! I wrote that! *smack*' or something of the sort;)

I'm curious to hear what Austins problem is.

AUSTIN316426808 07-01-2006 06:09 AM

Not surprised to see 28 Days Later, but very surprised to see it as high as it is. Everytime it's talked about here seems like there's mixed feelings about it.

Well doesn't that sound familiar.

Of course its a reworking of Phantom..... but its a hell of a lot better interpretation than the Andrew Lloyd Webber bullshit that came out a few years earlier (not to mention the awful Jullian Sands version - maybe you're mixed up with this?). This flick is quite possibly Argentos finest work because its coherrant and and has his trademark staged murder scenes only this time round he ups the savagery.
Needles taped to eyelids so there's no option for the female protagonist but to witness the butchery and reiceive a villianous headfuck from the "Phantom". Stabbed hands, ex-wives prying eyes blown away, scissor driven interrogation and disembowlment soundtracked by Italian thrash metal legends Steel Grave. This flick is gold and is reinvention of old subject matter (including Argentos) that spews intensity.
But yo.... you're like down with Jerry Maguire and can't see the merit in this?

geez...I m surprised Se7en didnt make it into the top 10...but maybe others dont regard it as highly as I do...oh well...this is saddening...:(

Don't get me wrong, I like the film, I was just disappointed that Phantom didn't make it(@Flayed-that's the problem I was talking about, not really a problem, just a disappointment like I said.) and...hell I don't know, I guess I was sorta taking it out on the decision to put a copy on the list. But it's a very good film which I do like quite a bit, if you like Phantom of the Opera has much as I do, then I don't see how you can't like Opera.

AUSTIN316426808 07-01-2006 08:58 AM

I'm an idiot...I was going crazy trying to think about what the other film would be along with Dawn and Halloween. I would've automatically assumed it was Night, but I didn't notice that the other Night on the list was the '90 version. Should've figured it was '90 and that '68 wasn't that low.

The Flayed One 07-01-2006 09:06 AM

Well, except for the absent blurbs, that's it, guys! Later, I'll do the honorable mentions list, which will contain every movie that didn't make the list, but was nominated, in alphabetical order.

All you guys who rocked out your blurbs, you're fucking awesome. If, as zero was questioning, it goes for a few more days and someone doesn't send in their blurbs, I'll assume they're not interested and they're your guys' for the taking.

Well, what does everyone think?

_____V_____ 07-01-2006 09:07 AM

I knew Dawn, Night and Halloween will make it into the top 5. Some overhyped ones made it into the top 10 though, but maybe thats because of the individual choices of everyone.

Most of the movies down the ladder might have had fewer people who saw it, hence the lower ratings. I was pretty sure Shining and Exorcist would do better, and Battle Royale much better.

Interesting list...

The Flayed One 07-01-2006 09:16 AM

I'm extraordinarily happy with The Thing being #4. It held on to the #1 spot for a long time, to the point where I thought it might take it.

AUSTIN316426808 07-01-2006 09:20 AM

As I've mentioned before, like most list, I don't have a problem with most of what's on it, but I'd radically change the ordering. That, of course, would be my opinion and when you've got the input of however many different people it's going to be pretty random until you get down to the obvious choices...yada yada yada...

Job well done of a cool idea Flayed.

p.s.
The only mild shock I got was when TCM didn't hit top 5 or 10. But it's right there at 11 which is why it's not all that much out of place then expected.

I had 7 at 2...

There might be someone who wants an explanation of why Psycho is back at 13 or why you don't have The Wicker Man ect. ect. It's just a bunch of different opinions thrown together.

Why is Seven being considered a horror movie?

More Detective/Crime Thriller, I would have thought.

..serial killer movies belong in the horror genre...even "Silent of the Lambs" .....even if its more like a thriller

PR3SSUR3 07-02-2006 05:21 AM

L.A. Confidential and The Usual Suspects are more conventional detective/crime thrillers, but when films are done in the manner of 7 and Silence of the Lambs, it's more of a horror/drama. Horror, like other genres, have subgenres.

PR3SSUR3 07-02-2006 06:20 AM

I think it's moving the goalposts a little too much so far as Seven as Silence of the Lambs go.

Yeh I agree. Those films are more in the territory of "psychological thriller" for me. Horror is a lot more gratitious when dealing with the subject matter (i.e Maniac, Deranged and Dressed To Kill). They definatley have elements of horror and are championed by genre fans but to me they aren't horror films.

AUSTIN316426808 07-02-2006 06:39 AM

Just a matter of opinion I guess.

The Flayed One 07-02-2006 07:23 AM

Hey, I didn't post any guidelines because this is what I wanted to see. Apparently, many people think Se7en is a horror movie, and one of the best ones at that. It didn't make my personal Top 25, but I was not offended to see it there.

knife_fight 07-02-2006 07:34 AM

I didn't put Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, or the Sixth Sense or many others on my list for the same reason... and it's not because I don't think they are horror movies. I just wanted to put 25 movies that I thought were definitely horror movies. I didn't want any movies on my list that were even remotely questionable in their intent or purpose, in order to avoid any circular discussions like this.

orangestar 07-02-2006 08:35 AM

My top 25...

1. Night of the Living Dead
2. American Psycho
3. The Sixth Sense
4. Pet Sematary
5. The Ring

Red Dragon
Saw
Scream
Rosemary's Baby
Final Destination
Session 9
Se7en
Halloween
The Shining
Manhunter
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday the 13th
Children of the Corn
The Exorcist
Cabin Fever
Creepshow
King of the Ants
Psycho
(Wes Craven's)New Nightmare
The Silence of the Lambs

Zero 07-02-2006 01:26 PM

but whose list was closest to the final????

(*go on and just admit it was ME!!!)

The Flayed One 07-03-2006 04:47 PM

Okay. I'll give people till Friday to get me their blurbs or at least pm me and let me know they're working on them/interested in doing them. After that, they're up for grabs so we can complete the glorious HDC Top 100. I know zero wanted Manhunter. Anybody else has their eye on something in particular, go ahead and pipe up. It'll basically be first come first serve.

AUSTIN316426808 07-03-2006 05:44 PM

I'll take Silence of the Lambs and I'm sure posher would give you a book on how good Scream is.

Zero 07-03-2006 05:48 PM

i'm willing to do many of these - i'd really love to do manhunter but would also like to do the following (if no one else really wants them):

Creepshow
bubba-hotep
frankenstein
the shining
and Night of the Living Dead (which, by the way, is listed as 1962 when its release date is 1968)

I'd also like to recommend that the official list be both closed and sticky(ed). . . i think anyone coming to HDC should see the list at the top and get a sense of the collective 'taste' of the group.

Elvis_Christ 07-03-2006 06:50 PM

I'll do Opera/ Night Of The Living Dead '90 and I Spit On Your Grave if you've got no takers

The Flayed One 07-03-2006 07:31 PM

Fixed the date for NotLD. Thanks, zero, for pointing that out. I'll fix small grammar mistakes (apostrophes & teh what have you) as I find them.

What I'm really curious about is what the long-standing members who DIDN'T contribute think about the final list. I mean, do you feel it's a decent representation?

There are, of course, some things that sadden me (mainly that I was the only person to vote for the Exorcist III, but you obviously know how I feel;) )

Aside from that, I can't believe that __V__ was disappointed at where Se7en ended up. I know it's your favorite, and I think it's a damn fine movie, but look at what beat it out! TCM, American Werewolf, Night & Dawn of the Dead, the Exorcist, Halloween, Psycho...I mean, those are the movies that are hailed by almost every list I've ever seen as some of the greatest. I think it's a great honor for Se7en to be there with them. I can't believe it beat out Dracula myself.

No offense to you, bro! I know it's just difference of opinion. I expected Se7en to be in the top 30 at most. Never in my dreams did I think it'd break the top 15!

Still can't see how Phantom gets left off of a top 100 list. 10 or 20 maybe(although I don't agree with that either), even 30 or 40, whatever, but a top 100 list without Phantom?
