I mean look at the wide, vast history of the cat,it just amazes me.

Roach spray, not the detterent kind, the "unfriendly" kind.
Apart from killing the creature, what does it "do" that makes the creature die?
Is it just like a massive immersion into poison?
Do they breathe it in? Is it absorbed through the "skin"?
Is it like a nerve gas of some kind?
Does it only affect insects?
Do you think it hurts for them?

Also

Thoughts?

Bug spray contains chemicals (including many organophosphate compounds) that bind to and permanently block the action of an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase.

Acetyl choline (ACh) is the nerve transmitter substance released by motor neurones (at a site called the neuromuscular junction) to stimulate muscle contraction.

The muscles relax (stops contracting) when the ACh is removed from the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) by the action of acetylcholinesterase.

By inhibiting the cholinesterase the bug can no longer break down ACh in the NMJ and so its muscles lock up in a state of tetany (continuous contraction) making flying and respiration impossible.

The South American indians used a similar approach to kill animals for food using poison-tipped blow-darts. They discovered the natural chemical curare which blocks the sites on the muscles where ACh usually locks on to activate muscle contraction. Because the ACh cannot activate the muscle the individual becomes paralysed and can then easily be trapped and butchered.

The toxin poses no threat to the people who eat the food because it is denatured (detroyed) by cooking and digestion.

Anaesthetists still use the same class of agents today (drugs including tubocurarine, atrocurium, cis-atrocurium and pancuronium) to paralyse patients during surgery.

ChEEbA 09-19-2005 08:04 AM

Well...thanks for the info there, man...I feel mean when spraying.
I hate even hurting things, I wish I could just like spray something that made 'em wanna leave.
Ah well.

Cats: I don't HATE them, but I don't feel they value interspecies friendship as much as a dog (the main household pet comparison), and they definately show less affection. A cat will be content with your company, but will seem more distant and less attentive. You cannot train them very well, either, and they tend to disrespect your property.
I think the main reason people like them is the entertainment value. Dogs rule. That is all.

novakru 09-19-2005 08:08 AM

Maybe if you're not cat person, they do seem aloof.
But I know my cat adores me-he brings dead animals all the time.
He can be anywhere, but the minute I feel sad-he's there-on my lap...almost like he has ESP

Neil Gaiman wrote this story about a cat that came to live with him and defended his house from the devil.Night after night this cat got torn to shreds, but stayed and protected the family even though the fight was killing it.

.....and for those not getting the hint, pack it in

ChEEbA 09-19-2005 08:18 AM

Hey zwoti...it was only really a discussion - on my part anyways. ;)
For the record, I wasn't attempting to start anything, and I am disspointed that the question couldn't be answered.
NM though I for one, am all done.

Novakru...Geiman is very close to genius, I love his stuff.
You should look at a few of his comics...they're on another level.
With the cat thing, no, I'm not a cat person, I'm VERY much a dog person, but I DO "like" my cat. They do have their good points, I just find more in a dog. I suppose after having my german shepherd literally save my life as a child, from one of the deadliest creatures on this earth, I'm kinda biased.

novakru 09-19-2005 08:27 AM

I know all about Gaiman-I have the entire Sandman collection(except a few that I lost)
I have a few of the Black Orchid series and hope to have them this Christmas(hint-hint Santa Claus)
I have a limted edition of several graphic novels he and McKean did.
Just about all the books although I haven't picked up Anansi Boys yet.

I think my life would be complete if he and McKean would do another comic book series.....of ANYTHING:D

*I love dogs too,and now that I am alone so much now,I really, really wish I could have kept puppy.
My best friends growing up were dogs.

ChEEbA 09-19-2005 08:31 AM

Puppies take a lot of time sometimes...but less and less effort required as time goes by. Maybe you could adopt a dog from this "humane society" I've heard about over there?
We have something like that here, with dogs of all ages, so if yours is the same, maybe you ould pick one up that's past the "difficult" stage?..although I always kinda get teary when I go in and see so many ditched animals, most looking confused, missing their families...you always know that the one you walked away with really needs a home.

As for Geimans comics, I'm currently reading "Mr Hero - The Newmatic man", it's very funny...the guy really has some unique titles going on. Can't wait for mirrormask.

ChEEbA 09-19-2005 08:37 AM

Back to questions...somebody should ask a question or two up in here.
Anyone got any questions?
^That's mine^:D

I enjoyed Mr.Hero, but my favorite out of all those "STARTED by Gaiman" is Lady Justice.

I did have a question, but forgot what it was....

oh well.

Marroe 09-19-2005 08:51 AM

Yeah, I asked before...why is "bologna" spelled like that, and pronounced "baloney"? Personally, I sound it out, and say it like that.

Bologna is also a city in Italy, maybe the meat originally came from there and Americans just mispronounced the word?

X¤MurderDoll¤X 09-19-2005 09:08 AM

Eating balogna is like eating raw hot dogs.

ChEEbA 09-19-2005 09:08 AM

Bologna
Quote:

A city of north-central Italy at the foot of the Apennines north-northeast of Florence. It was originally an Etruscan town and became a Roman colony in the second century B.C. Its famed university was founded as a law school in A.D. 425. Population: 404,322.
I assume its from there, spaghetti bolognese also.
That was a little late, I know.
This bologna crap looks terrible though...I just read about the usual things you can find in there...yech!

baloney, bologna Sometimes confused or misspelled. Baloney is foolish or exaggerated talk. Bologna is sausage or lunch meat.

newb 09-19-2005 09:11 AM

Speaking of bologna.....mine has a first name.

Marroe 09-19-2005 09:13 AM

so it's like the "g" is silent? "bolona"?

There's these things called 'sonic repellers' or something like that can't really remember. It's like a dog wistle for insects, it's so loud we can't even hear it but they can't stand it.

ChEEbA 09-19-2005 12:40 PM

I've heard of these, but I was unsure about their credibility.
Does anyone know from experience,if, and how well they work?

novakru 09-19-2005 12:41 PM

I've been perusing some of the links people leave in their profiles, there is a creative bunch here and they do not talk half as much as they should.I would love to see more of the artist's work come out in this forum IMO.

@It'sAlive- Don't you think it's kinda screwed up that Daryl Johnston isn't getting on the ring tonight with the other three guys?

Not a big NASCAR fan, but that sport is gettin' filled with crybabies lately, I'm glad they're doin' something.

But again, not a car fan.

Well at least you made an honest mistake, I on the other hand had someone actually think I was a fan.

novakru 09-19-2005 03:52 PM

@Austin:
Now that they are letting people back into the city, are you going back to see what your apt. looks like?
I heard the French Quarter isn't that bad off.
And,how are you and your girlfriend doing?

I saw my apt. on tv, one of those CNN fuckers did an interview in front of it. Looks fine from the outside.

I would love to go back but my gf wouldn't have any way to get back and forth to school, there's no clean water yet ect. The both of us are doing good here in Dallas so it's no big deal to wait another month or two. Thanks for asking.

What about Jimmy Johnson?

I'm still not sure about it but he's got a good case. Every draft pick and player signing was his decision, 2 rings and basically responsible for the third.

He should be there....one of the best evaluators of talent there ever was. But Jerry Jones always wanted half the credit so I doubt he'll get there

Are you near the coast of Texas??
Hurricane Rita is projected to go towards there and she doesn't look good at all.
Right now The Keys are about to get it.

I'm around Dallas and I don't think it's coming this way, of course we're probably going to catch some storms.

It's a cat2 and it's about to go right over the Gulf for about 2 or 3 days isn't that just fucking great.
