"One missed call 2" 6/10

Alright, but doesn´t come close to beat Miikes original.

Wild Zero, over-rated, really glad I netflixed it as I was going to buy it. Probably give it a 2.5 out of 5, maybe just a 2.

Agreed.

The (in)famous Battle Royale. Unfortunately, the version I saw was a Korean region-free disc, possibly a bootleg, and the subtitles were... not that good. Otherwise the movie was pretty damn good, with a very interesting premise full of social commentary that viewers unfamiliar with Japanese culture may miss. Overall: 7/10

The Sword of Doom, a truly excellent film. Tatsuya Nakadai simply dominates the film, which is quite a feat considering that his costar was the great Toshiro Mifune. Nakadai gives what is quite possibly the most compelling portrait of pure evil I've ever seen in a film. Many critics try to draw comparisons between this film and Kurosawa's samurai epics, but even at his very darkest (Throne of Blood, Kagemusha) Kurosawa was never this grim. Oh, and the sword fights were great as well. I really can't recommend this one enough. 10/10

Despare 11-15-2005 08:26 PM

I LOVE Sword of Doom, there, had to say it. The last Asian movie I saw was Peace Hotel. Good story with poor translation, I'd give it a 6.5/10.

7/10

In short better than Whispering Corridors but still not great. Read my full review at www.docticktock.com

Face. Pretty decent Korean ghost/serial killer flick. Not really that scary, the ghost imagery is just more of what we've already seen in Ringu and Ju-On, but I think it's really more of a detective story than a horror film. The bittersweet ending is perfectly fitting. I'd recommend this for fans of Korean drama. Overall: 7/10

Izo. What an interesting movie. Izo tries so hard to be thought provoking and I think it falls just short of that goal. Lots of gore, fights, and some nice shots make up for it's shortcomings though. Could have done without many of the scenes but I think overall I'd give it a 3.5/5. Wonder what Miike will do with Halloween...

Onibaba 4/5

This is truly an impressive Japanese film from 1964 that weaves a tale of supernatural horror around a meddlesome mother-in-law trying to keep her slain son's wife by her side, to survive in a harsh land torn apart by feuding emperors. The single location for the story is a sea of grass, continuously swept with furious winds. The stark black and white lends a heavy atmosphere throughout. And yet it is poetic and beautiful.

There is a companion to this film, which I have yet to see: Yabu No Naka No Kuroneko (Black Cat from the Grove)

noctuary 11-24-2005 06:07 AM

^Been meaning to see that one for some time.

A Tale of Two Sisters. Depressing quasi-ghost story, with a surprising twist near the end. Beautiful photography with minimal (and effective) "ghost" effects. Im Su-jeong gives a very strong performance in the lead role. I'll definitely be looking out for other films by director Kim Ji-woon. Overall: 8/10.

Tale of Two Sisters was amazingly well done, really had me thinking. I went in with lower expectations for the move and really came away impressed.

"Ju-on" is the first, my favorite and the most scary of the four, and funny enough also the most low-budget.

Where Can I get the others? I have the american version and "Ju-On: The Grudge". I actually enjoyed both despite what people say about the american release. I'd like to see the others.

Oh-yeah, the last Asian movie I watched was Rasen still. I'm Gonna watch "One Missed Call" tonight though.

Last night I watched:

Acacia, an entry in the "evil tree" sub-genre. Not bad, a few creepy moments, but nothing spectacular. Overall: 6/10.

Seance, a thriller/ghost film from Kiyoshi Kurosawa. This film is a prime example of Kurosawa's typical moody and ever so slightly surreal atmosphere. Impressive, but a bit illogical in places. Nothing I couldn't get over though. Overall: 7/10.

Suicide Club, great flick overall I really dug the way it played out. A little slow in parts but that didn't really hurt it much. Can't get that music out of my head...

Living Hell: Japanese Chainsaw Massacre

6/10

First of all, thier was deffinantly no chainsaws. The only reason this movie could be labled "The Japanese Chainsaw Massacre" is because of how the family is so messed up. The movie I thought was really slow untill the ending. Which wasnt bad at all. And it didnt have nearly the blood I thought it would.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

I was disappointed with this one. This is actually the first sequel to the "revenge" series (the first being Oldboy and the third being Mrs. Vengeance). I loved Oldboy, it's one of my favorite films. So, I was expecting a lot from this one. Yes, I did calm myself down before I put this baby in, but it didn't help. In Oldboy, you cared for the victim, and wanted him to get his revenge. Here, the protagonist was just dull, badly acted, and poorly written. I also didn't like the scenery in this flim. I usually could give less of a shit about the setting, as long as it stays to what the story is. But, there are exceptions. And this is one of them. In Oldboy, the sceneries were beautiful, and made me look around at what Asia is like. Here, it felt like they shot it in a Hollywood studio. It was pathetic! One last thing I had a problem with was the subtitles. I can never stand reading subtitles in a movie (except for The Passion of the Christ). Let alone, Oldboy was dubbed. At times I would drift away from the screen or go to the bathroom, and come back confused as hell. I wish they would've dubbed the film.

Just a sad disappointment of a film!
