Well people were afraid to make horror films so I am pretty sure it wouldn't have been made in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. I'm talking 30, 40 years.
If Melies didn't make those 700 horror films the films in the 1900-1910's would have had no courage whatsoever. You know horror films at that time were made in Europe, and Melies is French. Melies was a famous person at the time. He had his own theater, and he had quite a famous background at being a Magician. Also Melies kind of kicked off what real films should look like, and that films deserve alot of creativity, and effort. He introduced us to the term "LET THE CAMERA BE THE AUDIENCE". He also introduced special effects. GREAT special effects which were AMAZING, like things floating in the air, and disapearing into thin air. |
Hellraiser is a fantastic movie.
Well he deserves credit, but not for being the father of horror. |
Nobody knows how many film makers back in the 1890s had the idea of making a horror movie but what history tells us is that they guy who thought of making a horror movie in 1896 made 1 and it was a vampire movie titled the Devils Castle. The very same guy after reading Jules Verne novel from earth to the moon made a movie based on vernes book titled A trip to the moon in 1902 that was the 1st scifi movie. French film maker Georges Melies made those movies. Then he made more horror movies and more scifi movies. Until other film makers saw them and made their own. In 1910 Thomas Edison made the 1st Frankenstien movie in 1909 Gerard Bourgeois made the 1st Mummy movie and in 1908 Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde was made by Selig Polyscope. Its not like 10 guys all had the same idea if they did we would know who they were. I think people here get the phraze Favorate movie confused with Best movie. I will try to explain My fave Werewolf movie is the Howling but the best Werewolf movie is Werewolf made in 1913. Now the Howling is a much better made movie awesome infact but its not the best Werewolf movie. The best Werewolf movie is the 1st Werewolf movie thats the movie that gave other film makers the idea of making other Werewolf movies. Any movie about any subject that is made 1st is automaticly the best. Alot of people say Washington was the best President and they are right and other people say JFK was their fave president others say Lincoln you can have alot of faves there can only be 1 best. I will say the Omen is one of my fave horror movies I would be a fool and an idiot if I said the Omen is the best horror movie. Unless the Omen was made in 1896 by Georges Melies but its not so it cant be the best its just a fave and there are hundreds of faves. Now we know that when movies were 1st being made back in 1891 7 movies were made that year by diffrent people but 6 years later 1 guy made the 1st horror movie and the 2nd and 3rd who knows who made the 4th and 5th horror movies just be glad the idea of horror movies caught on.

The films in 1891 were animation.
|
That seems very narrow minded.
Just because it was the first made does make it the best, You also have to keep in mind.....Best is an opinion WHENEVER best is used is soley for opinion not fact. Just because it was the first doesn't make it the best. It is what elements were put into the movie. Same with alot of things. Just because someone gets done first doesn't mean they did the best. It is quality over quantity. |

Hey Classic I just read your post on Georges Melies and I am glad you know he was a Magican before he became a film maker. There have beena few Magicans who became movie makers in the late 1890s and early 1900s Georges Melies Harry Houdini like Melies owned his own movie studio. And George Albert Smith and Walter R Booth just to name a few. Melies is famous for making the 1st movie studio in the Parisian suberb of Montreuil. He is also credited as being the 1st film director. He was also called the King of the Phantasmagoria the Jules Verne of the cinema and the Magican of the screen. Of course Meiles movie influences were Thomas Edison inventor of movies and Louis Lumiere. If you think about it Willis O Brian couldnt have made The Lost World or KingKong had it not been for Georges Melies. After all Melies invented stopmotion and Willis O Brian used it for his movies. And your right Melies inventes Special effects in movies which is what made him diffrent than Edison. Just imagine back then when you made a movie that was 10 or 12 minutes long thats what we consider a 3 hour movie to be like today.

Ok....I wanna be Karloff. Yes you don't have to spell the best Copecope. But you spell REALLY bad and you really need to look at, I mean you're talking like it's ok to spell bad and IT IS ok but not as bad as you do. |

I agree 100%.
He may have only played him once but he is the original. The way he was, WAS the reason I love myers so much. The way he moved and everything is freakin sweet. I love the sequels but they screwed it up everytime. He also directed 1991's Hook. That movie is freakin sweet. Makes him even cooler. |
Nick Castle directed Hook???!!! Wow he's not a bad director.
|
YEAH I KNOW not only did he play my fave villain
He directed a kickass movie |
And one of my favorite actors is in it: Dustin Hoffman!
