I just watched this one and liked it.I was surprised after all the bad reviews I had read.

I think I had the opposite experience - I was disappointed because I read a lot of hype about it. Kinda wish I had heard the "bad" reviews first; I think I would have liked it more. ;)

Hey - Have you watched Red State yet? You mentioned it was On Instant and I watched it last week (or so) - Was wondering what you thought. We could PM about it so as not to clog up this thread, but it really riled me up and I want to hear more feedback about it.

...

On another note, Labyrinth is also On Instant.

I think it would be fine to discuss it here.

I didn't like Red State. I felt like Smith was simply trying to be shocking. I just couldn't find any redeeming qualities....

Gotta say I agree with you. It riled me up because I can't stand the notion that crazy zealot fucks like that exist... But it wasn't new territory. Just reminded me of evils I already know were out there so ultimately I found myself asking... "No kidding. Your point is...?"

Exactly. It almost felt like a watered down version of A Serbian Film or Gutterballs. Shocking me doesn't make the movie good...I was so pissed...How long did us Kevin Smith fans wait for this friggin movie? I am CERTAIN i heard about this flick for atleast 2 years....The wait ended in an utter pile of shit, imo. He could have atleast gave Mewes a cameo........

I didn't think Smith was going out of his way to shock. I thought Red State was like the In The Line Of Duty TV movies of the late 80s early 90s (Ambush In Waco being the obvious one) but with a modern twist i.e combining elements of recent horror films like Eden Lake, Frontier(s) and Wolf Creek. I thought it was an effective homage to those flicks melding fact with pure fiction to make a entertaining movie.

How? Arguably those two flicks only intention was to shock the audience. Completely different kettle of fish IMO from Red State which had a few harsh moments but didn't venture into territory any where near as extreme or vile.

Agreed...I may have used two movies a little extreme as an example. On the same token though this is a hot topic in my area(not the movie as much as the topic). I live less than 2 hours from Wichita. I respect anyones religion as long as it doesn't intrude on my or my families lives. The things this Westboro Baptist or whatever its called does intrudes on my emotions. I felt the film did the same. Maybe thats a good thing but on the other hand I wouldn't want anyones religion being defamed(not that I am saying Smith did that).

Extreme and vile were both there for me. Not necesarily as graphic as the films I mentioned but more implied.

I guess the movie just struck me wrong...like it was using the religious fanatics in my state to further paranoia. I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to summarize exactly what I mean....I hope I haven't pissed anyone off....:(

This statement made me think of a documentary I watched a couple of years ago: "Jesus Camp". Truly fucking scary shit!!
