Robert E. Howard was a writer in the late 20's and early 30's who invented the whole Sword and Sorcery genre that was popular in the 80's movies. His also incidentally was friends with H.P. Lovecraft.

Howard's greatest character was Conan, a wandering barbarian, kind of an anti-hero, who encountered evil wizards, monsters, tavern wenches, and the like.

That wasn't the only thing. Besides, it was 1930, way before Civil Rights. It was just a different culture.
