Darren Aronofsky's eagerly anticipated Robocop reboot might have hit a snag, with the helmer apparently keen to shoot supernatural horror Black Swan next.
With Natalie Portman already cast in the lead, and only minor budgetary issues left to settle, RiskyBizBlog is reporting that Aronofsky could shoot the passion project later this year, which would push production on Robocop back to mid-2010. According to the site, although the delay could still conceivably see the film hit screens in 2011 - as previously planned - it's also making MGM nervous, with the studio apparently "quietly putting out feelers for other directors who could come on to Robocop in case the timing doesn't work out." MGM declined to comment on the story, but would you want to see a Robocop flick in anyone other than Aronofsky's hands? |
i could care less about remakes .. see them or dont - if it's good its good if its bad its bad ..vote with your wallet ..etc.
i've said this a million times befire, and people complain the same way as they have a million times before.. my only comment - for this movie specifically - is this : The origional Robocop was made by a Dutch director - so satiring the USA was a huge part of this film .. where the biting humor came from. I cant see an american director stepping far enough outside to have the same approach .. so expect the remake to have a different approach ... I cant picture for the life of me what Aronofsky will do with this one.. |
To the surprise of no one, MGM has canceled its planned remake of Paul Verhoven’s Robocop.
Movieline spoke to a source at the dying studio and were told the movie, which was at one point set to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, was, “Gone. Kaput. Canceled. It was one of the first casualties. [Aronofsky] has lost interest anyway, I believe. Think we’re all just going to have to be happy with the three RoboCop movies that are out there”. Fans will just be happy with the first one since it’s the only one that’s good. They were only interested in the remake because of Aronofsky’s involvement. Without him or an equally talented director at the helm, a Robocop movie is unnecessary since Verhoven created not only a great action movie, but a terrific satire that wasn’t afraid to be weird. Of course, once MGM’s financial mess is cleaned up, this movie could be revived. Pray it doesn't happen; the revival, that is. |
Deadline.com reports that MGM has offered The Killing star Joel Kinnaman the chance to fill Peter Weller‘s iconic robo-shoes for the upcoming RoboCop remake.
With Jose Padilha on board to direct (not Darren Aronofsky) a script from Josh Zetumer, Kinnaman, who recently appeared on the big screen in Safe House and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, would be the first major casting for the reboot. Michael Fassbender has been linked to the RoboCop role for some time, although it seems as if he never officially entered talks for the role. Kinnaman recently signed on to Arthur & Lancelot (playing the latter), and he has previously had small background roles in some fairly big movies. While we haven't quite seen enough of Kinnaman to assess his leading man potential, his name won't exactly be a box office draw. Without the popularity of a Fassbender-type, it's difficult to know if audiences will accept a remake of an '80s movie that still plays exceptionally well today. RoboCop (the remake) is currently awaiting a release date, which we expect to find out once a star is locked in place. |

Did nobody see the Robocop mini-series Prime Directives that came out in the early 2000's? It was awful! The sequals were awful, and a remake will be awful. The original is the only one worth a damn!
