Halloween 4 has some very nice moments, with some clever framing and horror timing in it one could say might amount to being scary.

Point is; with firm direction, good old fashioned bogey men running around outdoors could still cut the mustard back in 1988 - perhaps only psychological horror can be deemed as truly scary today.

I still think slasher movies can be scary...and i really like Halloween 4....its a true slasher classic :D

Part of the problem with slasher films lately is they use disposable characters. You're not scared for yourself when you watch a movie, but for the characters you relate to. If the only people killed are the stereaotypes of the Sheriff, the town slut, the village idiot and the jock, who cares. You know the main couple will get through it OK. Set up a cast of characters an audience can identify with and kill off the one everyoen thinks will outlive the rest first and you can keep people guessing for 45 minutes or so as the rest of the characters fall victim.

yep, lack of character developement and predictability ..

you dont see a slasher movie to be scared .. just to have a laugh at some special effect kills (hopefully)

It started out scary....Psycho....cause i really think people got scared when they watched it back then...
It had strong characters and good plot twists....
... i hope slashers in the future have strong characteres and twisting plots....but i guess you gonna have both...
It is easy for a first time director to try out the slasher genre...you dont need a high budget and you dont need expensive good actors (anyway.... they think so...)

Yes, Psycho and Night of the Living Dead made the audience shift in their seats by killing off the presumed hero/heroines early in the film.

Once everything isn't so predictable, we have the viewers' full attention.
