I believe Evil Dead II did live up the first, but yeah... the third... it lost the charm. Was the third a studio film? Universal has the rights to it now, Anchor Bay having the rights the first two.

Invaders From Mars.
Bad acting, great special effects.
Not a bad movie to sit back and veg out on.

I've heard nothing but terrible things about this. Ultimately, I only watched it because I like Kristen Bell (Being a VMars fan) - but I was pleasantly surprised. Very plesantly surprised. It's not at all terrible, though it isn't exactly good. First off, it's visually stunning. CGI is well rendered, cinematography is good, and the digital color overlays create a certain atmosphere. I swear I haven't seen a movie so limited to certain colours (blues, reds) since the black and white ages. Second, there are some genuinely eerie moments. Tense. If you like movies that make your hair raise, and are heavy on the computer graphics... you might like this. I have seen the original, but fell asleep halfway through. Of what I saw, this doesn't even compare. However, when placed aside the other PG13 horrors out like The Messengers... it's the better option.

And that hand-grab scene? Breathtaking.

I’m a huge fan of the entire Dead series, Evil Dead I & II and Army of Darkness are three of my all time favorites. I think Army of Darkness was more of an achievement for Sam than the first two because he was able to inject enough comedy into a “horror film” that it made it almost universally watchable while the other two were less accessible movies. Evil Dead I & II are both great horror films and sprinkle in comedy here and there which doesn’t make the terror too saccharine or pull the movie off course. Army of Darkness however really manages to cross into the next genre and hang there a bit and it makes sense that a lot of horror fans would like the first two because they’re truly horror movies while the third isn’t. Like I said, I love all three for different reasons, but I think Sam did a wonderful job of making a comedy a bit horrific with AoD.

Ghost Rider

Popcorn entertainment at its finest. No substance what-so-ever, but it looks pretty and turns out to be really enjoyable.

Worth seeing in the theater?

For sure.

Any of these big budget CGI popcorn flicks are best in the theatre...the massive screen and blaring speakers really enhance the experience.

However, if you are planning to go see it I have one question - do you appreciate cheese? If not, you will HATE this movie. The script is just like an old school comic book...filled with really corny one-liners and bad jokes. I thought it was alot of fun, but I can totally understand how someone would disagree. Be forewarned.

Party Monster 6/10

Napolien Dynamite 6/10 it was much better the first time round

The nostril picker 5/10 shity slasher flick

Wrong Turn 5.5/10 I forgot I had already seen some of this rip of flick before.

Bad Lieutenant

Bleak as hell but brilliant and the ending was amazing.

Unaboner3000 03-06-2007 11:53 PM

Saw 2. I had only ever seent his once last year at the theatrical release. I thought back then, that this was a mediocre film. After seeing the 3rd installment, and then going back and watching 2....I actually liked 2 alot better. I still wonder where the hell 4 will go...but I guess I will find out this Halloween because I will definitely be one of those in the theatres.

Gryphon

I'll set aside the fact that this was written by HDC's very own Roderick Usher and try to review it without any bias. The story was fairly engaging, the acting was pretty good for a Sci Fi original, the gore was decent too. (Sean is 2 for 2 when it comes to having decapitations in his films. Nice!) The one major problem this film had was very bad/obvious CGI in just about every scene the Gryphon creature was in. I was also not a very big fan of the actor that played the main villain. He just seemed more like a drunk uncle than an evil sorceror to me, but all in all I found this to be pretty entertaining. If it had a little better budget for better CGI & actors, it'd probably be an above average fantasy adventure flick, but since it didn't have the budget for those things, I'll give it a.....

The Lost Tomb of Jesus

This was interesting from an archaeological standpoint. I'm not neccesarily convinced that what they found was actually the tomb of Jesus, but it's a thought provoking documentary nonetheless. The main issue I had with this was that they seemed to be jumping to conclusions too much and stating their own speculations & opinions as if they were facts which is not what a docmuentary should do. And where was James Cameron? I thought he made this documentary, but evidently he must have only produced it because I didn't see him in the film at all. Anyways, it was good for making people think, but it was bad for trying to make people think along the lines of the filmmakers own biased view. Bottom line is that I didn't neccesarily feel like this project was approached objectively from the start. I would have liked to have seen an equal amount of people trying to disprove that this was the tomb of Jesus, instead of everyone involved in the project really, really wanting it to be the tomb. It seemed like they were using their own biased opinions/guesses/speculation to fill in the gaps to reach the conclusion they wanted.

Even with all the hype and praise surrounding it, which I've been exposed to for years, I still wasn't dissapointed. Simply amazing. The twist was predictable, but the explanation of his exact illness was excellent and very creative. Loved it, and will definitely be looking forward to more Hitchcock.

Evil Dead 2 & 3 tonight, Vertigo tomorrow.

Check out Psycho 2. IMO, it's one of the most under-rated sequels of all-time. I loved it.

The Dead Next Door

Pretty good low budget zombie flick with some fun and some really cheesy moments. Some things were a little much, like the last names (Raimi, Savini, Carpenter, Romero) of some of the characters but I'd suggest it to a zombie fan who likes low budget stuff.

Boogie Nights.
One of my all time favorite movies. It's brilliant, every part of it is pretty much flawless in my opinion. The script, the acting, even the camera angles are all perfect.
I can't hear "You Got The Touch" anymore without breaking into fits of giggles.
Which sucks, because we watch the Transformers movie.
A lot.:D

I liked Kraken a tad more and that got a C+ from me. Like I said, it was a decent film. The only big issues I had were the bad CGI & the bad casting of the evil sorceror. Other than that, I thought it was pretty good. *Shrug*

Godzilla 2000.

The St. Francisville Experiment

This was like a Blair Witch ripoff. It started with the producer telling us everything we see is real & everything we see all happened in 1 night. Neither is true and the fact that they tried to pass it off as such was annoying to say the least. 4 regular people are sent into an actual haunted house for a night of ghosthunting. This much is true, but that's about where the truth ends here. These folks see several mysterious occurances which all seem incredibly staged and then at the end they even capture some footage of "real" ghosts. As I watched this, I pretty much knew it was all a bunch of bullshit so when I finished it up, I did a little research on the film and come to find out.... I was right. Here's the scoop. The 4 people were real & the really went into the a house that is actually supposed to be haunted. The backstory about the ghosts in the house though was all total bull and the mysterious things that happened were staged by crew members operating things from a trailer parked behind the home. When the "documentary" was & 1 night stay in the home were finished though, the studio wasn't satisfied so they called all the characters in the film out to LA for some reshoots & to add some scenes, which turned out to be the most obviously staged parts of the movie. So, despite what the filmmaker said at the start, it was not all real & it didn't even all take place in 1 night.

Then when you throw in the fact that the 2 girls in the film happen to be just about the most annoying people I've ever seen in any film ever, you've got yourself one crappy movie. Steer clear of this one.

D

I'd give it an F, but the concept was decent. It was just terribly executed & there was no need to have the film maker flat out lie to us at the start of the film. That's just annoying.

Borat

Can a movie this hyped up live up to the standards being set for it? Almost. It was pretty funny throughout, but I have to question how much or how little some of the people he fucks with really know what's going on. For instance, Pam Anderson lives in Hollywood and The Ali G Show was popular before this movie was filmed so are we really supposed to believe that she had never seen or heard of Borat before? I doubt it. Some of the people really seemed genuine, others it was hard to tell.

In any event, it was pretty funny, but by no means the funniest thing I've ever seen which is what some people will tell you.

B+

I watched Stranger Than Fiction last night and this morning. That movie was amazing

joshaube 03-08-2007 03:25 PM

Stranger Than Fiction was pretty good. :) Last I watched?

Dirty Love - which, y'know, ISN'T as bad as IMDb would make it seem. It is utterly terrible, and the acting could make a baby cry, but there are some geniuenly funny moments. I rarely laugh out loud at "comedies" but I laughed a few times during this. I have an odd kind of humour. I'm sorry, but bleeding from a period all along the store as a store clerk yells "clean up on aisle #" as she runs around holding super abosrbant grannie pads just makes me giggle.

I am also watching the complete series of Point Pleasant. On episode 10 of 13. One disc left! :o It's getting good. Too bad it was cancelled before these episodes aired.

swiss tony 03-08-2007 05:22 PM

Spiderman

9/10

I like it about 70000 times more than the second one, despite what people think. The second one it almost TOO emotional, with the money problems, love, loss of family, coping with EVERYTHING, I think it's too much. The first is just, light, some thematic stuff, but mostly plot, much better.

My only problem with the first one is Green Goblin, otherwise I agree 100%.

IMO the Green Goblin wasnt a great villain to begin with. Making him look like a rejected power ranger villain sure didnt help either.

I don't care much for him either. He isn't the worst thing to ever happen to cinema or anything, and his ties to spiderman were cool, but he does look very childish. He has some very cool weaponry, like the razor disc bomb he uses in the burning building, etc.

The movie is literally defined by the "drop" scene. It keeps you in suspense even after seeing it so many times, although it's kinda unreal, how she falls and hangs onto that tram...
