The opening of this movie has a beautiful and scary underwater scene. I thought the movie would be awesome from that scene. Also, whoever found the town is a genius. It feels like the town in Resident Evil 4. So do the inhabitants. Maybe Capcom was inspired by this movie. The town is the perfect setting for a horror movie. But then they introduce the main character. A guy who either can't act or was told to be annoying, bumbling, silly, etc. The female lead is beautiful and I wish she was in the movie a lot more. The story is pretty good but for the most part ruined by the main character and the silly humor that enters the story because of him.

I've never read a Lovecraft story. But I will one of these days. I've been curious about his stories since finding out that Ninja Gaiden on NES was influenced by the Cthulhu.

ya got to read a lovecraft, its essential horror reading

Bridesmaids.
It was a decent watch.
A bit overhyped I thought, but then I can see why chicks would like a female-centric comedy like this a bit more than I would.
I thought it was entertaining and well written. Funny in some parts, sad in others. Felt like quite an "honest" film, and definitely indicated female jealousy issues quite well.
I'd say 6.5 out of 10 for me.

Grave Encounters

meh....some decent jumps....but overall, I'm getting kind of tired of the found-footage flicks.

Tony

It's a film about a serial killer, based on the muswell hill murderer from London. It's rather bleak, a bit in the vain of HEnry, which was obviously an influence for the filmmaker , this being their first feature as well.

Definitely a must see, if gritty independent movies are your thing.

8/10

Sugar Cookies

A 70's movie written by Lloyd Kaufman of Troma fame, also made by his first production company armor, it is about a lesbian seeking revenge ona porno producer.... pretty easy to watch exploitation seventies style with a very dark side.

7/10

Evidence (2011)

For more than 1st half of this 'found-footage' flick it was like another "there's something in the woods" story but then it suddenly takes an unexpected turn & become one big mess & mix of different ideas; i.e. Blair Wicth meets The Crazies meets REC. and so on (except Grave Encounters :D). It was fun nonetheless.

La hora fria aka The Dark Hour (2006)

A pretty decent Spanish apocalyptic, Sci-Fi Horror thriller with a great sad ending.

Backed with stellar performance from the cast, this is a beautifully made an intense Spanish Psychological thriller from Jaume Balaguero (one of the directors of modern classic [REC.] movies!) where the plot revolves around Cesar, who is a 'concierge' in an apartment complex. He lives day to day at the front desk at the service of the building's tenants, all while being a generally harmless and friendly individual; but Ceser is unhappy. The thing is he has a problem to find or cope with happiness & thus to tolerate upbeat people around him. And now he has find a way to make some 'adjustments' for his long awaited 'happiness'.
It's one of those films that will only work if the performances can carry it and Luis Tosar on the role of Cesar does an excellent job like he did in great Spanish prison-revolt thriller Cell 211. On his dramatic counterpoint, Marta Etura (who was also in Cell 211) presents an optimistic, positive-thinking young woman Clara.
The film capitalizes on some very atmospheric set pieces, as most of the scenes take place in Clara's apartment, or in the entryway of the apartment building. The tension builds slowly over a period of weeks, as Cesar becomes more courageous and aggressive with his 'plans'.

Overall, another great film from a REC. guy. Highly recommended.

A Russian Horror flick, with good production value but very mediocre plot and disappointing ending.

Actually all the Russian "horror movies", which were made for the wide screen, are very mediocre. Funny fact - every given film was presented by its producers like a "first Russian horror movie" - and we still haven't at least one that would be really good:)
