Dante's Peak

I watched Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb again recently for a critical analysis essay I had to write. Honestly, I'd give it 9/10...maybe even 10/10. It's one of my favourite films of all time, brilliant satire and hilarious!

Also, I watched Enter The Void most recently. Crazy, crazy film. Really trippy. I'm not sure how I felt about it though. The unpleasant scenes make it not great to watch whilst high but the trippy scenes almost make being high a prerequisite. I guess I liked it more than I disliked it though so...6 (maybe 7)/10.

what it is

The Shrine (2010)

holy crap, it wasn't wholly crap. i'm smashed so idk if i'll type spoilers so here's your

***SPOILER ALERT*** just in case

this movie was... the shit. amazing. had everything i could expect or hope for from a horror film, let alone a MODERN horror film. the fact that one third of the movie was in polish was a huge deal to me. i'm american, and when an american film is dedicated enough to not only produce a good portion of their movie in a 'foreign' language, but to cement that with some bitchin folklore, cool cinemetography and... sub-par(but it's a horror show so who gives a flip) acting, that's an em-effing win. scene that smacked me in the face with awesome (though predictable): first girl in the mist with the statue. also a twister: bad guys are the good guys and good guys are the bad in the end? = baller. this reminded me of everything i like about horror movies and i would highly recommend it to any of you blokes who haven't seen it yet. sry if you watch it because of this review, but i warned you about spoilers yo.

Darbareye Elly aka About Elly (2009)

Quote:

A group of 3 married couples (Sepideh-Amir, Shohreh-Peyman, Nazi-Manoochehr), some with children, visits to a seaside town & stays in a seaside villa for a short break. The only single people in the group are Ahmad who has recently separated from his German wife and Elly who is a nursery teacher to Sepideh's child. Sepideh (who brought Elly in the trip) has organized the whole trip, as well as playing matchmaker for Ahmad and Elly.

After the very first night, in next morning Elly wants to go back home because of her worried mother but Sepideh doesn't let her. Sepideh and Shohreh went shopping, men were playing volleyball and little girls were playing at the beach with Elly while the other kid (Arash) was swimming. After a while, the girls came and reported to their fathers that Arash was missing. The film really takes off just at that point when, in an apparent attempt to rescue the 'missing' kid, Arash from drowning, Elly disappears. Was she drowned too or did she just leave...but why would she do that?...whatever actually happened to Elly?
Iran's official submission to 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language category in 2010 (though didn't get the final nomination) is a very nicely crafted suspense-drama that interestingly play with its characters, somewhat in a 12 Angry Men fashion where lies, suspicion & speculation slowly starts to digs off some dark sides of each others very human nature.

Highly recommended.

A "good-looking" film with a ridiculously funny concept & predictable twist.

A fascinating documentary that looks at the fallibility of perception and memory, bias, and especially how that plays into our justice system.

Agreed totally on Slaughter Hotel. What a waste.

Nice! Definitely do. It's a great film, particularly with respect to Bruno S.'s performance.
