Compiled Master List of the 70s updated. We now have 19 films finalised for our chosen 20. Still need to finalise ONE more 70s film.

Big thanks to roshiq, neverending, realdealblues and hammerfan for submitting their lists for the 80s. It takes the total tally to 5. I await plenty more submissions, folks!

Rabid (1977) (neverending) (seconded by Straker)

Can I back this? Or has it been added?

roshiq 05-13-2013 11:47 AM

Yup...Rabid is a well deserving one, I also like to share my support for it.

You can second the backing. The ones in bold are the finalised ones.

And we have found our 20th chosen one for the 70s, thanks to hammerfan and roshiq.

Keep the entries for the 80s coming, folks!

Wow, this is ridiculously hard to choose 20.

It's interesting that originally it was contemplated that ten films per year would be picked.

For these three decades, I've decided to stick with the ten best movies of the decade instead of year by year. Why? Because some years are very poorly represented, or practically not represented at all. Not a lot of movies were being produced at this time, and the medium was still new and experimental.

That makes sense when there are only 79 movies on the Master List for a decade. But when there are 973?! Yikes.

So no one likes the idea of submitting more than 20? (I already know how you feel, neverending!) :) Just throwing it out there.

So far I'm managing to keep my list pretty strong and avoid going down the nostalgia route. If we increased it past 20 my list would probably include movies I loved as a kid but deep down I know are total crap..... Ghoulies would probably make my top 30, so lets just save me some embarrassment and leave it at 20 please.

@ V: should have my list done by the weekend.

Take your time, Straker.

Big thanks to fortunato for submitting his list of choices for the 80s. I expect at least 6-7 more lists before the weekend runs out. Keep sending in those entries, folks!

Just submitted my 80s list. Wow, that was tough. Interestingly, for the 80s being the slasher decade, I don't think I had a single true slasher film in the top 20.

As far as being able to keep the list strong past 20 -- I hear ya, Straker -- it's tempting to want to include childhood favorites that aren't all that great. I managed to resist the temptation too, and I think it's still pretty easy to keep the list strong. Just for fun, here's my next 20.

21 Re-Animator (1985)
22 Altered States (1980)
23 Sleepaway Camp (1983)
24 A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
25 Day of the Dead (1985)
26 Christine (1983)
27 Aliens (1986)
28 Halloween II (1981)
29 Prince of Darkness (1987)
30 Cujo (1983)
31 The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
32 Friday the 13th (1980)
33 Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)
34 My Bloody Valentine (1981)
35 Tetsuo (1989)
36 Pet Sematary (1989)
37 The Changeling (1980)
38 Deranged (1987)
39 Tenebre (1982)
40 Amityville II: The Possession (1982)

Five of those made it in my top 20.

I'd love to see your list at some point. Maybe once all the votes are in? Your 70s list too.
