Out of the Past (1947). Opening in the sleepy town of Bridgeport, the tone seems more appropriate for an episode of The Walton's than a film noir classic, but the shadows are not held back for long. In rolls Paul Valentine, an unctuous character from our hero's past, a city-slickin' smudge quite out of sync in this idyllic town whose industry is trout fishing. The story employs a simple yet wonderful mix of timeline and narration, ploys that oft not work but that are supreme in this director's hands. The story itself keeps the viewer just one notch behind the moment, with perfect twists and turns and never a dull moment. Even more snappy than the story is the dialog, with poetic delivery on all accounts. Robert Mitchum is stellar in this role he was made to play, a witty detective with but one shortcoming, a stupidity expressed in the company of dangerous dames, and Jane Greer's role proved just the chemistry for Mitchum's IQ adjustment. No greater dame noir has better lit up the screen, with her understated performance of ostensible alliance shifts only belied by the slightest of glances. Jacques Touneur's direction is nothing slight of masterful, and this was probably the best work of his career. With the wholesome out-of-doors mingling with the seedy underbelly of city life, the shadowy world of the latter proves too dank a character, leaving its stain on the otherwise pristine countryside. These two worlds make better neighbors than friends. In the end our protag must come to a choice between that which is good and that which he is only good for. No greater ocean could fill this chasm.

An excellent & beautifully tense French thriller with an art house treatment! What a game of gambling! Loved it.:)

Like the terrible way George Sluizer remade his masterpiece (Spoorloos aka The Vanishing) in Hollywood, Gela Babluani almost did the same thing here to his own original work.
May be it wasn't actually that bad as I'm saying but it wasn't actually a good experience at all to watch it just after seeing the original. I think their intention to get too smart with the story & the characters mostly done the damage along with a bunch of wrong cast.

Agreed. Unbelievably good!

Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny, & Girly (1970). Girly is a Mother Goose and Grim Fairy tale gone horribly and delightfully wrong. The slow buildup in its incipience lays the foundations of a family ostensibly perfect but deeply tragic, with the elements of tragedy to be foisted upon anyone unfortunate enough to stumble into this sinister family's neighborhood. Once the incredulous nature of the family is accepted, what follows is but a brilliant and black comedy with an unsettling nature. Girly not only drags the viewer along, but lures us into the agency of misconduct in its sordid and naughty affairs, rooting for the most seductively corrupted Girly. The story is nothing short of zany, but its premise is easily swallowed once the savor of this cinematic dish is tasted. As the thick of the plot develops, nothing is apparent or predictable, leaving us nothing to do but relish the next bout of mischief. The acting was splendid, with Vanessa Howard leading the fray, seamlessly changing her polar deportment like a diva changes outfits. The rest of the cast is just as delightful, but it is Vanessa that captures the dark shadows in our hearts. The sing-song dialog only adds to this inappropriate affection. The direction is magnetic, taking an outlandish premise and crafting it into the darkest of comedies, where backstory and plausibility are thrown to the wind in order to exact the most devious pleasure possible. The camera occasionally flexes its prowess, but for most of the run time it seems happy to take a back seat and let this audacious dispatch tell the story without need of overbearing celluloid arrogance. As this flick finally begins to wind down, its denouement sets aflame another volatile fuse for our imaginations to cogitate upon, more shenaniganry to be explored after the eject button has been employed. Merci beaucoup.

Great flick! I love TPBs, I discovered them a few years back and now own all 7 seasons and both movies! Funniest show ever!!!!!!!!

Have you heard anything about the new series the actors from TPBs are doing? I thought it was supposed to be out by now.....

Decent and enjoyable but I'm such a William Forsythe fanboy. Great story that could have been better with a better script and protagonist..still worth seeing..

I'd be interested to see how close this is to the real story..
