Halloween III is a really bizarre entry in the franchise. It is so unrelated it could have been a standalone film. There were probably a lot of pissed of movie-goers when they realized Michael Myers wasn't in the film.

I however knew what to expect when buying the DVD so I wasn't really disappointed. In fact, I kind of enjoyed the title. It wasn't terrific by any means, but it was a fun little flick.

It was a VERY dark movie with a surprising brutal ending.

The Bad Sleep Well (1960). This lesser known phantom of Kurosawa's Shakespeare trilogy turns out to be a masterful study of the moral corruption of Japan, as if this degeneracy is for corruption's sake, sans any avaricious designs. The usual suspects turn up to the show, with Mifune and company giving their usual standout performances. The story, with its relaxed Shakespearean association, takes its time letting loose its plot; AKA, it tends to drag a bit. For those with patience, the morass is worth the wait to see how the tragedy ties up its evil threads. Direction and shot composition were splendid, as should be expected from this master. For a different take on Shakespeare and even Kurosawa, this classic might be worth a go. Merci beaucoup.

Highlander: I can't even remember the last time I watched this film all the way through. It was probably when I was about 15 and thought the movie kicked so much ass. Now? Not nearly as much. If any movie deserves to be remade, it's Highlander. The storyline is great, but everything else sucks. The acting is terrible. Clancy Brown is great, but Christopher Lambert? He couldn't act to save his life. Even Sean Connery's perfomance is pretty lackluster and far too cheesy. I guess the fact that he's an Egyptian with his trademark "Shcottish acshent" doesn't really help. The special effects while passable at the time are severely dated now so a remake with good actors and proper special effects would rock all kinds of ways. Still a good watch, but I can't help but wonder how much better a remake would be.

Predators: Easily the best Predator movie. Holy crap. Take everything that was awesome about the first Predator movie and throw out the cheesy one-liners and rippling biceps. I was thoroughly impressed from start to finish. The only thing that had me worried was this: (spoiler) It seemed like they ditched the whole Topher Grace is a serial killer character angle and made him a doctor which might seem plausible. The predators might include a doctor just to keep the hunt more interesting? They really gave next to no clues that he was in fact psychotic until the very end. So in those regards it was well done, but throughout the movie I was worried that for some reason they decided that idea was too much or something? (spoiler)

Fantastic film. One of my Kurosawa faves.


Finished watching Battle for The Planet of the Apes last night, which completes the series.

And from tonight, till the end of October, it will be a continuous spook-athon for me and the wife.

Teed off with Stir of Echoes earlier. Now sitting down to watch Burnt Offerings.

Dead and Breakfast (2004). Horror comedies all walk the line between stupid and fun, with the former the usual victim of this difficult genre. Dead and Breakfast instead breaks into the magical realm of pleasantly enjoyable over the top carnage of blood strewn mayhem. The acting was solid for the genre, with horror regular Jeremy Sisto and even David Carradine showing his mug. The gore was more funny the disturbing, but those with weak stomach still might be best steer clear as heads do roll in this flick. The combination of the storyboard intervals laced with the hilarious music of Zach Selwyn were more than a treat. The technicalities were all up for the challenge of this comic and bloody affair. The end remarkably leaves room for a sequel that might best be left as a threat. Merci beaucoup.

Big Bad Wolf

if you like your werewolf's cracking wise like Freddy Krueger [ it even sounds like Freddy ] then this is the movie for you.

A couple of nice practical effects but overall, not so good.

I really found this one disappointing. I really did. Which is a shame because I believe I got the recommendation from a few people on here, plus a decent review from Rue Morgue, so I was looking forward to it... But it didn't deliver. I thought that the pacing was all off the the scenario was just unbelievable (what bothered me the most was the "wolf threat" - Wolves behaving more like human serial killers than animals - What they did was JUST NOT IN WOLF NATURE - sigh).

Noted. It's on the Netflix queue right now.

Also - The movie title you are searching for is Right At Your Door. GREAT movie and also recommended.
