Otis (2008). What a wicked blend of implied brutality and dark humor. The story wavers almost perfectly, leaving the viewer discomfited when the laughs are offered. Sublimely mean in spirit, alternating between comedy and inspirational torture, and with characters that become too likable for comfort, when things get dicey my heart threatened to burst from my chest. The characters, all too real but a tad askew of center, were wonderfully portrayed by a stronger than usual cast for this genre. The direction was strong, and that dialog, perfectly timed and delivered, gave course for nervous giggles. The rockin' 70s soundtrack was apropos and worked wonderfully to set the tone. The ending was fair, though it is lamentable that the superior alternate ending was not used. No matter, for Otis still makes for a deliciously satisfying, albeit guiltily so, movie experience. Merci beaucoup.

I also enjoyed Otis. I thought Daniel Stern and Kevin Pollak were fantastic in it.

I really need to pick that up. Got it on tape... but should upgrade it to DVD or Blu-Ray. De Palma sure put out some amazing stuff back in the day. It'd be nice to see a return to form.

Get the Special Edition if you can - contains the documentary and those features mentioned above, plus it's got the unrated version. There is a comparison feature too, between the unrated, R-rated and the cable versions of the film. Pretty nifty to get to know about all the stuff related to it.

De Palma and Richard Franklin are both great directors for their unadulterated Hitchcock worship. Psycho II and Patrick rule I don't care what anyone says :p

I remember the first time I saw it on VHS and having a huge crush on Deborah Shelton. It became one of my oft-watched films back then. And that whole dancing sequence (with that killer background score)...ooh baby!

Ripoff of Hitchcock or not, gotta love these 80s slasher stuff!

Ace in the Hole (1951). A flop at the time, this Billy Wilder noir classic just gets better with age. Fueled by opportunism and greed, the characters in this film are all too believable for their ugly portrayals of humanity willing to glean the profits of another's suffering. Kirk Douglas helms the gaggle of ugliness in an over the top performance of exploitative manipulations, ending in a literal carnival of tragic proportions. The conspicuous lack of a hero may have accounted for its poor box office performance, the masses were not geared up for journalistic film noir; or maybe they did not want to face the untoward reflection of the media- the gawking masses. With great direction, impressive performances, and an ending that was a director of photography's dream, today's audience might just be a little more real about the veritable nature of the media and its audience.
