The Loved Ones 2009

8/10. Clever writing. Brilliant casting! The "princess" character is one of my favourite horror movie villains; surprised that a teenage girl could be so maniacal. The film has a couple of very good cringe-worthy gore scenes and a fantastic ending that wraps up this twisted story nicely. I will watch this many times again.

Rubber 2010

7.5/10. Who wouldn't love a movie about a psychokinetic tire on a homicidal rampage? This one is not for everyone. It kinda does the movie-within-a-movie thing and is sometimes difficult to follow. It's also very slow-moving at times, and doesn't contain the best, or even a lot of dialogue. I purely enjoy the concept of this tire killing people.. I think it's bizarre and hilarious and I really like it.

Maniac 2012

8/10. One of my recent favourites. Elijah Wood does a stellar job of playing a serial killer, scalping women in the night and patching up mannequins in the day in this POV-style slasher. Super gory, intense movie with a lot of edge. I especially enjoyed one scene in particular, that pays homage to the original 1980 version. I felt the ending could have been stronger, but still very much enjoyed this experience overall.

I want to see The Loved Ones.

Rubber......not my thing. I thought it was terrible.

Maniac.....I thought Elijah Wood was incredible! I want to see more of him in these type of roles. I knew he was going to be great with "dark" characters when I watched him in Sin City.

Low-budget flick on a group of people trapped inside a sauna trying to escape. Seriously, that's the plot. Skip.

This wasn't very good. I don't mind occasionally having characters contain cliched personality traits but introducing them using those traits makes them a cliche. Terrible dialogue, uninteresting characters, an incredibly slow and boring story with a reveal that you won't even care about by the time you get there.

THE CRAFT (1996)-Really like this one about modern day Witchcraft with kudos going to Fairuza Balk who delivers full throttle. ****

The Babadook

"The Babadook" is a crazy, scary, metaphor-rich, and beautifully creepy psychological horror-drama. The ambiguities, amazing cinematography, and subtle imagery make the movie so terrifying, rather than the jump-scare fest it could have been. The house itself is so dark and morbid, which perfectly reflects the somber tone of the film. The acting from both Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman (a very talented young actor) was outstanding and made the tension between mother and son so realistic. This movie will mostly appeal to the horror buff due to its slow pace, but I give it my highest recommendation.

Wrong Turn 6 (2014)

Wtf was I thinking??!! I might as well had watched a redneck hillbilly porno!!

D

Venom (2005)

I found it to be an interesting story and I recognized some of the actors. I'm surprised that there was not a sequel made.
