A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
No surprises in this one. Everything went exactly as I figured. I like the premise of having to be quiet or else you are ripped apart so part of me was still entertained but it's nothing I feel like I would ever watch again. |
The Jonestown Massacre: Paradise Lost - A documentary on Jonestown with a mixture of interviews and actors recreating the last few days.
Scary stuff. |

I liked it too. Created with dedication. I didn't love it as much as you. I'd like to see it again. I don't think I saw it under the best conditions.

The Borderlands
The first thing that struck me about this movie was how much we are now used to things like exposition. Some people, myself included, like to be smartalicky about it, going: oh look, exposition, hihi. But it has become a bit of a crutch for the viewer. So you notice that you need more time to get into the story when you don't have that at your disposal. The story itself takes its time to build up but I have to say that it does that well. With the sounds at first and then the dog, not to mention the priest committing suicide. But it's in the last 15 to 20 minutes where this film really delivers and makes it scary and eerie. And while the makers do a very good job with the budget they have, part of me would wish for a master of body horror to jump in and give them that little something extra. Or would you then run the risk of making it cartoony? |

It Follows is the real deal. I tell anyone I can to see this one. It should have made far more in theaters. I believe it was going to be a direct to video originally. |
Don't Listen (aka Voces) is one of those recent films that cements Spain's reputation as a strong country when it comes to horror. Is that reputation co-cemented by Netflix? Perhaps. Once you are down the rabbit hole and all... But when it comes to content (REC, La Influencia, Veronica,...), one must admit that there definetily is something there.
The actors do a good job and the jump scares really work. Where lesser filmmakers use them as a cheap ploy, these grab you because they genuinely come from out of nowhere. It also leaves me wondering about the themes in this film. On how much they reflect Spanish culture and the influence of religion. One main theme there is the Spanish Inquisition. Another that comes up here (and in La Influencia as well) is the importance of family. Is this a subconscious consequence of growing up in a society where Catholics present the family as a cornerstone of society? And how big is the taboo on suicide ina country like Spain? The scene with the writer at the kitchen table takes a bit of the speed out of the story. I can see what they are trying to do there, how the ghost/witches uses your fears and traumas against you, but one cannot help but ask how such an experienced man can fall for this. But that is really the only point of criticism. Overall, an enoyable with a few suprises and some good scares. Well recommended. |
RACCOON VALLEY 2018
A deaf woman is left to fend for herself after the small town she lives in is evacuated after a military plane crashes into the water supply. The plane is carrying a chemical which infects those who drink it, making them ill and very contagious. Different and pretty good. |
![]() 8/10 Must be my first Asian found footage and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. I did not expect much, but the scares were really smart done and the characters really delivered, all of them. Reminded me of Grave Encounters. Fun fact: They wanted to film it in the actual place in Gonjiam, but the South Korean guv. refused and they did it in Busan, but making the place as close as they could. |
Assault on Precinct 13
Not sure if this is good as a remake, but it is enjoyable as an action flick in itself. And the cast does its job. |

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1990). Remake of the seminal 1968 classic isn't as bad as it's been given to be, but a lot of gaffes dilute what could have been more enjoyable. As much as I like Romero, He really should not have written the script as too close to heart and also He declared publicly that He was doing it strictly for a chance for the original investors to make some money back. Scenes that are all but copies of the original and just becomes silly towards the end with a less than impressive finish.
Cast isn't bad...Tony Todd is probably the best choice for Ben and Patricia Tallman (KNIGHTRIDERS, MONKEY SHINES etc) makes a more assertive Barbara, even if the hairstyle is hideous. The rest of the cast are not really impressive, even normally reliable Tom Towles. Also, the Zombies here just are not scary (unlike the Creepy ones in the '68 version), despite the good makeup job here. It also drives Me nuts how the film seems to start in early afternoon and also how the kitchen door window stays broken for so long. This was Tom Savini's Directorial film debut and he has related that it was an awful experience for him with Exec producers John Russo and Russ Streiner shooting down any ideas He may have had. He probably wanted to get it over with, which may explain the sluggish tone that occurs. **1/2 |

And I love Barbara's haircut and that final shot. |
Wrong Turn (Remake) -
Seems like the studio got the memo on the casting for this one. It's kind of funny. They only missed having an Asian character or African American female character. They could have squeezed them in somewhere as school friends of the lost group. Still I found the movie kind of entertaining up to the twist. SPOILERS!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!! SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok. I thought that Wrong Turn was supposed to be about Redneck inbred mutants or something. That seems to be what I caught in the pieces of the others that I saw on TV. But apparently this new one decided that The Village had a good twist and they used that. I don't hate The Village but it's not a movie I'll ever see again. I was ahead on the twist in The Village because Shamalan always has a cameo appearance. So I knew he wasn't going to play a Native American character. But back to Wrong Turn. It's like they couldn't fully decide on who they wanted to play the bad guys. It's all over the place. And then the lead girl makes I guess decisions based on their situation. But towards the end I was thinking why are you carrying this guy's baby? I really didn't like her character at that halfway point and then didn't care about the movie. I'll still check out the original movies. But this felt like a waste to me. The best things in the movie are the overhead shots of the dense forest. I like the idea that anything can be out there. However there are far better movies than this with that subject. |
The Suicide Squad 8/10
Much better than the first. This one I actually liked. |

Though, good to hear. Have loved the various iterations of the comics over the year...and while I think it would work better as a series, it's nice to know it's improved. Quote:
Yeah, I didn't hate it or anything - but they really ought to have called it something else to avoid the comparisons to the earlier series. When I heard it was a remake, I was looking forward to something that represents more like what the first one was on tone, darker, grittier, less comedy, maybe a different version (but not that different) of the villain/s, or like, a different setting showing the family was bigger than we thought it was. Ah well. |
DEADLY MANOR 1990
A group of teens stop for the night in an abandoned house with a strange car parked on a pedestal in the yard. Not scary but fun. |
![]() 11/10 Re-watched last night this masterpiece, the first time since my childhood. Was worried it would suck, but what a ride! The two Peters were incredible actors, just incredible. Cannot say what I liked more, the comedy, the atmosphere, the cast, the location, the plot. Everything comes together so smoothly. |

I still need to see Murder by Death. I keep hearing good things about it. I think that it's as good as Clue.
The Suicide Squad - I wasn't planning on watching this so soon. But it was reviewed on HorrorDVDs. And I read something about the upcoming Batman movie so I decided to watch it. First, I hate how they attempted to sell this movie early on. They should have titled it something different. It's feels like a sequel. And it's not a true reboot. Also, it seems like DC basically thought the director of The Suicide Squad would be able to do Guardians of the Galaxy for them. The Suicide Squad is an entertaining movie. However, it's very violent. And mean spirited in many scenes. Almost right from the start. There are some extremely dark moments and it's disturbing at times with the main bad guy. But if you are a horror fan wait for those scenes. They are like something out of the darkest sci-fi / horror movies. Idris Elba always gives a strong performance and he's good in this as well. Harley Quinn's character is far darker than I've ever seen in the comics and cartoons. But I guess it fits with DC movie Harley. She's still a funny character though. There is one character that is getting a spinoff and I don't know why. I'm not interested in that character at all. I know the main bad guy from a few comics and a really good Batman Beyond two parter. I do wish that some of the Justice League showed up as this is their thing. A line discounted one of them. Even then that one line doesn't give a time period. Plus it doesn't discount the others. Nor a character they included in the Snyder Cut although that's not official. But still, it's just another example of bad development of the DC Universe. Too bad we still don't have this virus under control. The final scene deserves to be seen on the big screen. I'll probably watch it again just for that one day when I get a really good home setup. But it's not a movie I want to own or re-watch completely. It is better than the first one though. But that wasn't a real difficult task to accomplish. |

"Fried Barry".
Er...weird. Quite entertaining though. Involves a degenerate, deatbeat father junkie who get abducted and replaced with an alien consciousness. Think...bits and pieces of "resident alien" meets "trainspotting" with a little bit of a Lynch feel, and a little bit of a Hardcore Harry aesthetic. It's worth a watch. |
