Those Who Wish Me Dead 7/10

Lots of questions left unanswered. But it was entertaining.

The acting was a 10. The story could have been better.

Did they use "She's a Beauty" by The Tubes as the theme song?

I'm not quite sure what to think of this one.

Took forever to get going. About 50 minutes. Lost my attention and I missed the whole purpose of the mission.

What was up with the zombies? Some of them reminded me more of cannibals than undead flesh munchers.

And does money have any value in a world overrun by zombies?

Zombies got to buy things too, right? I think a good "zombie movie" would be one where people go FAIRLY crazy and cannibalistic, but not totally crazy. Like it's living people who become infected, but they have their full mental faculties, they know who they are, and who their family and friends are, they go to work, take care of their children, but are also definitely somewhat crazy and various degrees of cannibalistic. Might be too sad... but would definitely be horror. ::big grin::

Synchronic (2020)
4/10

Two buddy paramedics deal with the effects of a powerful psychedelic drug hitting the neighborhood, including the disappearance of one of their daughters.

Not a bad start to an interesting concept, but along with rather surfacey main characters, the execution of the ending half was so incredibly long, talky, stifled, and labored. I understand the budget may have been on the low side, but that's never stopped creative filmmakers from creating some fun action and suspense when it's a good time for it. The film's ending third had lots of opportunities to have some "Star Trek" fun, but it was always blunted... a tease, and then muffled with a wet blanket of somberness. The relentless somber soundtrack didn't help, but I can understand matching the socks.

Sounds like Army of the Dead might be a movie for you.

Speaking of soundtracks. It was probably the worst part of AOTD. Odd, odd song choices.

I appreciate they try to keep the Saw franchise going. That being said, This addition is the weakest so far.

CARLITO'S WAY (1992). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>

DePalma film of a former Gangster getting out of prison and determined to turn his life around, but environment and an outdated moral code stymie this.
For whatever reason, we are shown the ending of the story at the beginning of the film and it almost make's You wonder why time should be spent watching. Stick with it as Al Pacino gives a restrained performance (and I think He deserved the Oscar for this instead the overrated SCENT OF A WOMAN) and an almost unrecognizable Sean Penn nearly steals the film as his corrupt attorney. Good supporting cast, but lovely Penelope Ann Miller whines a lot (it seems like she says "Charlie" at the end of every sentence) . ***1/2

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a fun ride. It tapped into a similar vein as Stranger Things with the nostalgia and the looks.

That said, the real horror is Nixon getting elected. ::wink::

I don’t know a whole lot about grain, but I still have a very hard time believing the probability of the events in this movie. Can’t you just dig yourself out? And if you were his mom, wouldn’t you be up there with your son 24/7?

The acting was good though.

The premise is indeed odd, but if it has it's own term and wikipedia page, I guess it has at least some validity.

Also... wtf, Minnesota?

I liked it. Watched it twice. I read the backstory about the changes they made. I knew something was weird with the helicopter pilot.

I'm gonna watch it again now that I read some hidden shit going on in this film. Interesting stuff.

Kinda skipped through some scenes. Kinda dragged. Many beatings were given and were a bit violent. The end kills were quite good.

Land of the Lost (2009)
6/10

I laughed and enjoyed it. Some nice special effects. It's pretty mild on everything. Considering Land of the Lost was a childrens' TV show from the 70s, I thought it might be OK for kids, but was surprised how sexualized it was. But I guess they were just shooting for older adults who saw Land of the Lost TV show in the 70s.

THE RAPTURE (1991). Mimi Rogers is quite good as the bored promiscuous women who becomes a Fundamentalist Christian and finds that devotion may not be enough. But the story becomes a bit, shall We say, Preachy and it seems there is no resolution in sight. Not bad, but overrated. Was interesting seeing David Duchovny here with a Mullet and knowing that he and Mimi played former partners years later on THE X-FILES>. **1/2

Interesting. Good to get your opinion on this one. I remember seeing parts of this some 20 years ago, but I don't think I ever saw it beginning to end. And I certainly don't remember how it was resolved. Unusual film for sure.

Saint Maud -

I saw a topic on this at the HorrorDVDs forum. I thought this would be a movie like The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Something slow but interesting in the end. But I thought Saint Maud was more artsy and well directed. But not high on the horror. And also not too sure of the story it was trying to tell.

Even posting the link would spoil the movie as it's in the text. Go to Bloody-Disgusting.com and look on the front page if need be. It's still in the trending section. But I wouldn't.

As a straight up action film, Army of the Dead has it's merits. No memorable lines, though. Just a lot of machismo BS and all the predictable clichés.

As a zombie film, it's bollocks. Which is probably why they throw around different names for these things. Cover themselves and stuff. And the whole alpha zombie, dystopian subplot can F right off.

Is the killer as cool as he looks?

classic_horror_fan 05-31-2021 02:16 PM

I just saw two comedy horror anthology films called "Fun Size Horror: Volumes 1 and 2," with a lot of short segments that turned out be very creative and entertaining, to say the least. They are also very original as well. They are not the greatest or any big budget by any stretch of the imagination, but they are still worth a lot to most horror fans, especially those into the horror anthology sub-genre. ::danger::
