I just now ordered (I still have some birthday money and what not) the original Shutter solely based on your recommendation V. I hope it is really good. I should note that supernatural movies tend to scare me, so hopefully it will be both good and scary. Is it anything like Tale of Two Sisters? The reason I ask is that I really liked that movie and I have to admit that is one of the only films that I actually screamed at one part.

If you loved Ju On, Ringu and The Eye, it's tailor-made for you.

Okay, I haven't seen those yet, but I have seen their remakes and I liked them (for the Grudge and The Ring). But, from what I know and have seen from those movies, it sounds like I would like it. I will find out this weekend if that will be the case.

Oops - yes, in my case, it was a mistake. I didn't even know it was a remake... sorry about that. If the original is really that scary, then it must be the worst remake ever, because it couldn't have been any more boring in my opinion.

I'll definitely give the original a chance if I can find it, although I have to say that the typical Asian horror "girl with long black hair staring at the floor" stuff doesn't work on me - except for "The Grudge" for some reason, especially the originals - and the TV versions, which I think are WAY more creepy even though they are less graphic.

MichaelMyers 06-19-2013 07:45 PM

Candyman - 3.98

Ringu - 4.09

Ya, I hope not, as well. Might be a good idea for you to specify which version when you post the pics. Some aren't as good recognizing by "the box" as we might be.

Candyman: 1.5 (i was more scared with the feeling of being in the projects than the Candyman.)

Ringu: havent seen Nip org

Stir of Echoes: never heard of it = )

Stir of Echos is a top notch supernatural thriller starring Kevin Bacon. It's a classic. I'm frankly appalled there are so many who haven't seen it.

Im gonna watch it right now. I've chatted horror movies with people for decades, never heard anyone mention this one. I never see it on best horror lists. Wonder why this one seemly dropped out of minds.

It got a lukewarm response because it came out right after The Sixth Sense and was in a similar vein. It wasn't as well-received and has never been able to shake that stigma. I agree with neverending -- it's a very good horror thriller, and its too bad it hasn't been better appreciated.

Plus, Kevin Bacon.

I know the title, I've just always been under the impression that it was an action movie for some reason. I'll put it on my list of movies to watch.

I liked Stir Of Echoes better than The Sixth Sense in all honestly. It's a very good movie and it's very well done. My rating isn't that high because I just didn't find it all that "spooky", but it's an extremely underrated movie.

_____V_____ 06-20-2013 09:12 AM

Scare-O-Meter scores (out of 5)

Candyman (based on 9 ratings) - 2.7
Ringu (based on 6 ratings) - 3.3
Stir of Echoes (based on 4 ratings) - 3.0

All 3 films achieve pretty decent scores, with Ringu topping the trio. More people definitely need to see Stir of Echoes - an underrated horror gem.

All 3 films added to the opening post.

House of Usher: 4

Pit and the Pendulum: haven't seen

Masque of the Red Death: haven't seen

Straker 06-20-2013 09:42 AM

It's tough to separate these three movies, they are all beautifully spooky/ scary in their own way and full of atmosphere...

House of Usher: 4 (My favourite of the three and sets a perfect tone and atmosphere).

Pit and the Pendulum: 4 (The most intense of the Poe adaptations)

Masque of the Red Death: 4 (Amazing atmosphere, great performance from Price!)

Loving that movies aren't being pitted against each other in the traditional tournament format, but instead are being rated without a winner/ loser format.... Always feel so guilty/ disappointed in the tournaments where I effectively have to vote against amazing movies and usually end up abstaining or throwing a vote to a good movie just so it doesn't get whitewashed!

Kandarian Demon 06-20-2013 11:06 AM

House of Usher: 4

I would like to add that these 3 movies are among my absolute favourites, even if I don't find all of them particularly spooky.

Neverending -- thanks for the heads up on Stir of Echos!

I saw Stir of Echos last night, so (_V_) you can add my spooky rating to the Stir total. Loved the subject matter of hypnotism, and sensitivity the spiritual world. Quality cinematography, shots, directing, acting. Found it hard not to judge it against other movies of it's general type, Dead Zone, Shining, Jacobs Ladder, (seeing dead goes back: Topper, Beetleguise, Frightners), 6th Sense, etc. Stir didn't really have any new take on this old plot line (wouldn't count hypno as new). Nice escape movie of the genre. I personally like 6th Sense much better.

Stir of Echos - 1
House of Usher: 3
Pit and the Pendulum: 2
Masque of the Red Death: 1

Some bipolar ratings

The Exorcist - 4.97

The Sentinel - 1.01

Burnt Offerings - NO DATA

Straker 06-21-2013 10:40 AM

Three great 70s flicks....

The Exorcist: 3 (Expect this one to score high, some amazing scenes and a quality movie, but 3 feels about right for me).

The Sentinel: 4 (Camp as hell, but so effectively creepy. Surreal and offbeat nature just add to the atmosphere.)

Burnt Offerings: 3 (Some really effective scenes, great cinematography, hugely atmospheric).

Two movies featuring the great Burgess Meredith too, his performance in The Sentinel is probably his best outside of Rocky... Quality actor.

neverending 06-21-2013 10:43 AM

The Exorcist - 5
The Sentinal - Can't recall if I've seen it.
Burnt Offerings - 3

Kandarian Demon 06-21-2013 11:10 AM

The Exorcist - 2
The Sentinel - Haven't seen it
Burnt Offerings - 3

I know my rating for "The Exorcist" is probably going to cause a few raised eyebrows, but it just doesn't scare me.

The Exorcist 5
The Sentinel 3
Burnt Offerings 4

I saw Burnt Offerings several times as a child and was horrified that the father could become influenced by spirits to the point he would attempt to drown his child. The pool scene and the final scene left an impact on me.

The Exorcist is the only movie I can think of that scared the crap out of me before I ever saw it. In fact, I never saw it until I was almost 30. I remember one time while I was in college, I thought I was going to finally watch it. I lived in a big house by myself and was taping the movie in the living room while doing dishes in the kitchen. The TV was on and I could hear it from a distance. It creeped me out so much I never watched the tape.

Now the movie is in a constant battle with The Shining as my favorite horror movie of all time.

Anyway...

Scare-O-Meter scores (out of 5)

Insidious (based on 6 ratings) - 3.0
The Grudge (remake, based on 7 ratings) - 2.7
Shutter (based on 7 ratings) - 2.7

All 3 films achieve more than decent scores, although Shutter should have had a much higher rating, IMO.

All 3 films added to the opening post.

I just wanted to mention that I was able to watch the original Shutter (2004) last night. I have to agree with V that it was one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. Of course, ghosts and demons tend to scare me. The ghost herself was not what was scary, it was how well they built up suspense, at least in my opinion. I definitely thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Scare-O-Meter scores (out of 5)

The Exorcist (based on 10 ratings) - 4.1
The Sentinel (based on 4 ratings) - 2.8
Burnt Offerings (based on 6 ratings) - 2.8

The Exorcist gets a super solid rating, while the other two score more than decently as well. All are added to the opening post.
