CHAPTER 9

EXT. BLAKE CITY ROOFTOP - NIGHT

A rooftop of a lone, abandoned building in Blake City, attached to the side looking over the street is a billboard for "Jade Brew," it features a drawing of a girl dressed in green shorts, a green shirt that shows off a bit of her stomach, and green knee-high boots. She has two mugs in each hand, overflowing with a green beer. On the ledge next to the billboard a four-leaf clover-shaped grapple grips on, soon after Moira climbs over dressed as the girl on the billboard.

She sits on the ledge looking down to the street, few cars are out. The occasional vehicle honks at the billboard. Moira stands and walks across the thin ledge. Looking down at the cars while walking instead of straight ahead, she isn't scared. Suddenly a figure dressed similar to Renegade, but white instead of black appears behind her and grabs her shoulder. She leaps away in fright, falling off of the ledge onto the rooftop. The man in white jumps down, his face is now visible and he raises his goggles. It's Wayne. He laughs.

WAYNE
I thought you had luck on your side. Why did you fall?

MOIRA
Well I didn't fall off the other end, luck enough. Why are you dressed like that?

WAYNE
He dresses in black and hides in the shadows. If I'm moving fast enough I should blend in with the sterile white hallways. The hall lights are on all night.

Moira runs her hand up the sleeve.

MOIRA
I like it. Shouldn't you be at the asylum?

Wayne grins.

WAYNE
I wanted to show off the new threads.

MOIRA
No, you wanted to check up on me.

WAYNE
Ya saw right through me!

MOIRA
When are you going to stop treating me like a sidekick?

WAYNE
When you stop wearing sidekick shorts.

Moira glares at Wayne

WAYNE
Moira, I'm kidding, come here.

Wayne holds his arms out. Moira leans in and he gives her a hug.

MOIRA
How's your chest?

WAYNE
A little sore. But I'll be fine. I'm going to go now, good luck tonight. If you need help Gore The Red is back in town.

MOIRA
Alright. Thanks. Bye Wayne.

WAYNE
We'll talk more about this sidekick thing tomorrow, alright?

MOIRA
OK.

Wayne vanishes. Moira is still in a hugging stance when he leaves, she stumbles forward and catches herself. She looks at the ledge, takes a few steps back and runs for the ledge, she leaps when she gets to it and lands on it perfectly with her arms spread out, looking down on the city. Moira then leans forward and falls off. Her eyes close as she drops and the wind blows against her face. Nearing the bottom, she pulls out her grapple, latches onto the side of the building and lowers herself safely.

EXT. BLAKE CITY STREETS, SIDEWALK - NIGHT

Three men on the sidewalk are walking together when they spot Moira. Their faces light up.

MAN #1
It's Jade!

MAN #2
Can we get a picture?

MOIRA
Sure!

One of the men pulls out his cell phone and each guy takes an individual with Moira smiling.

MAN #2
Hey, thanks a lot.

MOIRA
Have a good night.

The men walk away, Moira rolls her eyes.

Nah, it was a very good piece. I'm impressed, and I like the idea of Wayne having different costumes to suit the environment. Reminds me of Nite Owl II.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Gore The Red.

Note: Takes place before the Brix and Roland Kassir preview.

CHAPTER 10

FADE IN:

EXT. BLAKE CITY, THE JADE PUB - NIGHT

A large pub, featuring another image of Jade on the sign. The parking lot is nearly full. The windows are stained green.

INT. BLAKE CITY, THE JADE PUB - NIGHT

Drunken customers fill the place wall to wall. Irish music plays over everyone's conversations. At the bar sits a large, muscular man with red hair, bits of his black hooded-sweatshirt are torn around the sleeves. He's got a half-empty mug of green beer clenched in his fist. This is RON KOKKIVOC, aka GORE THE RED.

A bartender leans in to his face and gets his attention

BARTENDER
Excuse me, you're Ron, correct?

RON
Yeah. What's it to ya?

BARTENDER
You were requested in the back room, sir.

RON
By who?

BARTENDER
Ms. Jade.

RON
Oh. Where is this room?

BARTENDER
Right behind the bar, sir. If you just go around-

Ron climbs over the bar and walks to the door.

BARTENDER
Or that.

INT. BLAKE CITY, JADE'S PUB, BACK ROOM - NIGHT

Moira sits on a couch, still in costume, holding an empty bottle of Jade Brew. She places it among several other empty bottles on the table. Ron walks in and smiles at her.

RON
How do you get in without getting noticed.

MOIRA
Window.

RON
That's a shame, you own this place and you have to sneak in through the window.

MOIRA
I was kidding. There's a back door...

RON
Nevermind then. How have you been?

MOIRA
Fine. What are you doing back in town?

RON
Decided I would see what you and Blur have been keeping yourselves busy with these days. Thought I'd bust up a few baddies with you for old time's sake. Where is the quick little fella anyway?

MOIRA
The asylum.

RON
I knew it!

MOIRA
No, somebody is trying to break in and kill the Red Dynamo.

RON
Oh. What did ol' Macky do?

Moira shrugs.

MOIRA
So, Wayne left the city to me tonight. Unless you would like to join me.

RON
You're such a flirt.

Moira's face turns red. Ron laughs.

RON
I'm just kidding. I know you're Wayne's girl.

MOIRA
What, no I'm not. We're just-

Ron interrupts.

RON
Whatever. I'd love to go out for a night on the town with you.

EXT. BLAKE CITY, TOWNHOUSES - NIGHT

One of the worst places in Blake City, a neighborhood full of connected townhouses. Nothing is well kept, the state of the lawns and exteriors of the homes are ignored. A large van parks outside of one of the houses. A man runs inside of the house. Moira and Ron sneak up to the van, they open up the back. Several large bricks of cocaine wrapped in tape populate the back of the van.

MOIRA
Just as I thought!

RON
Lucky guess...

Ron looks at Moira waiting for a laugh. He eventually gets it.

RON
How would you like to execute this?

MOIRA
I have an idea.

MOMENTS LATER:

Moira and Ron are nowhere to be seen. The man with the van walks outside and around to the back of the van. He opens it up and starts grabbing the bricks. After he removes a few of them he sees Moira sitting in the back with a bright smile. She points her grapple at him and extends it, it hits him in the face and knocks him out.

The door to the house breaks in half and another man bursts through it. Ron steps out over top of him. He's still awake. Moira gets out and runs over to them.

RON (to man)
Who told you to sell this stuff.

MAN
I don't know! I was just buying some!

RON
Just?

Ron punches the man and knocks him out. Moira runs over to the man she knocked out and shakes him back awake.

MOIRA
Hey!

DEALER
What did you do to me, bitch?

MOIRA
I knocked you out. Who gave you all of this.

DEALER
Fuck off.

MOIRA
Do you know my friend? They call him Gore The Red.

DEALER
I said "Fuck off."

Ron stands over him.

RON
Hey. I'm Gore The Red!

MOIRA
Now, if you don't tell us who you got all of this from my friend is going to have to force it out of you.

DEALER
It was Roland Kassir. OK? Let me go now.

EXT. BLAKE CITY POLICE DEPT. - NIGHT

The dealer and his customer stand with their hands behind their back tied to a light post. The van full of drugs next to them.

INT. ROLAND KASSIR'S MANSION - NIGHT

Several men stand guarding the home. Guns ready. The door is punched in and Moira runs inside. The guards open fire. She manages to duck and dodge every bullet. She trips one guard and the gun manages to shoot out another's knee. she charges at one and punches him in the face. He drops his gun she grabs it by the barrel and tosses it at the last standing guard, knocking him out. Ron enters after the gunfire stops.

INT. ROLAND KASSIR'S MANSION, ROLAND'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Moira opens the door and Roland opens fire. He stops when Moira goes out of sight. Ron steps in and Roland shoots again, hitting Ron in the arm. Ron angrily glares at Roland. He runs at him full-force and kicks his desk which slides backward and knocks him out of his window. Moira jumps onto the table and uses her grapple to pull him back up. Roland's head is badly scarred. Police sirens can be heard in the distance.

MOIRA
I think we should go...

FADE OUT.

CHAPTER 11

EXT. TWILIGHT CITY, WESTWARD POST, EMPLOYEE PARKING LOT - NIGHT

Eric walks Sydney to her car. He clearly still feels nervous from the small shake in his step and heavy breathing. Sydney seems to be nervous too, keeping her head down. They get to her car.

ERIC
Here we are.

SYDNEY
Thank you, Mr. Westward.

Sydney opens the door to her car.

SYDNEY
I'll see you tomorrow.

Eric grins.

ERIC
First thing in the morning!

The grin fades as Sydney gets in the car and he rolls his eyes at what he'd just said. He grabs the door and stops her from closing it.

ERIC
Wait, did you enjoy the uh... The lunch?

SYDNEY
Yes, sir, it was delicious.

ERIC
I meant... Did you like going to lunch with me?

SYDNEY
Yes, sir. I had a wonderful time.

ERIC
You don't have to keep calling me "sir," office hours over. You don't even have to call me that during office hours. My first name would suffice. How about we do it again tomorrow? If you don't have any plans.

SYDNEY
I never have any plans, Eric. It's a date.

ERIC
A date? A date.

Eric smiles. Sydney smiles back.

SYDNEY
Goodnight.

ERIC
Goodnight.

Eric waves, Sydney waves back through the window. After she drives off Eric stands watching the car. He puts his hands on his hips and points his head in the air and laughs to himself, a hug gust of wind knocks him off balance, he catches himself. Wayne is standing directly in front of him.

ERIC
Nice getup, Lucas.

WAYNE
I have a quick question.

ERIC
Everything is always so quick with you. Sometimes I think you don't want to spend any time with me.

WAYNE
Cute. I want to ask about a... Well, I guess you could call him a Vigilante. Wears black, sticks to the shadows, carries a lot of knives in guns.

ERIC
Wayne, that's pretty much the entire lower-class population of Twilight City.

WAYNE
This one killed a couple thugs doing a break-in with James Macky.

ERIC
No way, somebody killed The Red Dynamo?

WAYNE
Not yet, at least. He's breaking into the Asylum tonight to finish him. I'd like to know what I'll be dealing with.

ERIC
I don't know anything. But of course, you're Blur, when have you ever known what you were dealing with?

WAYNE
Thanks for your time.

ERIC
Oh, you've got to run now?

Wayne makes his exit so quickly it's as if he'd vanished. Eric laughs to himself.

ERIC
Oh, Wayne. Always in such a hurry! I like him better when he's not chasing bad people.

Eric walks to his car.

INT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM, BASEMENT - NIGHT

A dark, leaky basement. the only things in there are pipes, spare mattresses, boxes of deceased resident's possessions, and a small window letting moonlight in. Huddled in the corner is Kemal, the orderly. He has his head buried in his hands.

KEMAL
He was innocent! I doomed an innocent man! I forced his soul out.

Wayne appears next to him kneeling down.

WAYNE
Kemal, what are you doing down here?

KEMAL
He's gone. Kemal's gone.

WAYNE
What happened to you?

KEMAL
I'm not Kemal! I killed him! I didn't mean to. It was supposed to be an inmate! I'm sorry! I killed him!

WAYNE
Kemal, I don't know what's gotten into you. But I'm going to get you help. it's safer if you stay down here for now though. After I take care of this I'll be back. I promise. I'll get you help for whatever's gone wrong.

Wayne vanishes again. Kemal sits up and looks for him, his head returns to his hands shortly after.

INT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM, PSYCHIATRIST'S OFFICE - NIGHT

A psychiatrist for the asylum wanders around his office, looking for all of his missing files.

PSYCHIATRIST
Where did they ge-

Renegade emerges from the shadows and grabs his neck. He puts a finger over his mouth and puts him into a sleeper hold. The psychiatrist passes out quietly and Renegade drops him on the floor. He steps over to fusebox on the wall and opens it.

EXT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM, HALLWAY - NIGHT

The hallway containing all of the most dangerous patients. All of the lights go out. The manual locks on the doors are the only things keeping the prisoner's indoors. The door to the psychiatrist's office sits at the end of the hallway. It slides open and Renegade steps out, holding a 9mm in his hand.

Love it as usual. I thought the dialog in the first scene between Eric and Sydney was very well done.


And I remember the character who's inside Kemal's head, I just can't remember who's he is and what his name is. It's the one who's power is pretty much a curse, isn't it?

CHAPTER 12

INT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM, HALLWAY - NIGHT

Renegade makes his way down the hall his eyes glued to the names on the doors, he doesn't know Red Dynamo's name. He looks off-screen toward the opposite end of the hallway from where he entered. He shouts in the darkness.

RENEGADE
White isn't a good idea in the dark.

The white figure he's yelling at can be seen in the distance, it quickly turns back around the corner after he yells at it. Renegade raises his 9mm and progresses toward the corner in pursuit when the white figure turns the corner again at great speed and SLAMS into Renegade, he and Wayne break through the door of the psychiatrist's office on the other end of the hall.

INT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM, PSYCHIATRIST'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Renegade stands with his gun, the little light in the room prevents him from spotting Wayne at the speed he's moving.

WAYNE
I know you're quite fond of hiding in the shadows. So I equipped my goggles with night vision.

Renegade fires blindly and misses every time, Wayne continues to punch him at his fastest. Renegade grabs his arm and throws him to the ground.

CUT TO:

EXT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM MINIMUM SECURITY HALL - NIGHT

All of the personnel have responded to the commotion from the hallway Renegade and Wayne are fighting in, other than one guard left to watch over the minimum security hall. He has his flashlight out looking down the hall, extremely nervous that something he is in no way prepared to deal with will appear at the end. Pan to Artaud's cell, the eye slot slowly pulls closed then the door begins beats over and over with a wailing scream from Artaud.

ARTAUD
Help me! There's somebody in here! Oh my God, help me!

The guard hesitates but inches toward the door and slips his key in, he takes a long swallow before turning the key. When the door opens he is tackled to the ground by Artaud, but his eyes now look empty. We finally get to witness the darker side of David Artaud, this is MOMUS!

He grabs the guards head and slams it into the floor hard enough to put him into a daze, but not enough to knock him out. Momus continues speaking to him.

MOMUS
Don't worry. Don't worry. I'm sure that the company's life insurance plan will more than take care of your kids-

Momus grabs the guard's face and looks into his eyes, almost as if he's studying them.

MOMUS
Both of 'em.

The guard is speechless.

MOMUS
Oh, I know you!

Momus punches the guard in the skull until it's shattered inside of his head like broken glass in a sack. Two of the fingers on his right hand are clearly broken. He grabs the keys to the cells and returns to his, he closes the door behind him.


CUT TO:

EXT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM - NIGHT

Eric Westward's car arrives outside of the asylum. He gets out dressed exactly as one of his robots. He looks up at the windows and takes a deep breath, he uses his talent to restore all of the lights. He runs toward the building.

CUT TO:

INT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM, PSYCHIATRIST'S OFFICE - NIGHT

The lights return, Renegade looks up, when he looks down he's only holding Wayne's coat by the sleeve, he runs at Renegade again from the opposite end of the hallway. This time he smashes him through the wall. Wayne stops, Renegade falls to the ground outside. Unconscious. Wayne puts his coat back on and jumps out to him. Before he can even land he is punched and sent crashing back into the building.

Renegade jumps back in and pulls out a knife and presses it against Wayne's throat when a flying red capsule hits him in the chest and bursts into flames. Volpone stands outside of the Psychiatrist's office holding a specially-made gun. He opens the gun and puts in a blue capsule, he hits the flaming Renegade and though the fire is extinguished, his chest, arms and stomach are surrounded in ice.

Wayne delivers one last blow, which knocks him out cold. (No pun intended)

WAYNE
Thank you, Volpone.

Volpone nods.

VOLPONE
Did he get The Red Dynamo?

WAYNE
Thankfully, no.

Wayne punches and shatters the ice and removes all of his weapons. He takes the jacket and checks all of the pockets, he removes the boots and the goggles. He's only got his T-Shirt and pants left. Wayne cuffs his hands behind his back.

WAYNE (to Volpone)
Did you want to give me a hand?

VOLPONE (to Wayne)
Sure. No problem.

Wayne and Volpone pick him up by his arms and drag him down the hallway. Wayne's other arm is filled with Renegade's possessions.

EXT. BLAKE CITY INSANE ASYLUM - NIGHT

The police have already arrived outside and Renegade and his possessions are handed over. Wayne grabs Volpone and they both quickly vanish. Renegade starts to fade back into consciousness as he's put in the back of the car.

Wayne takes Volpone back to his car.

WAYNE
Why did you come?

VOLPONE
Let's just say a hunch.

WAYNE
No, really. What told you to come.

VOLPONE
I wanted to see you get your ass handed to you. And I hadn't had a chance to test out my capsule gun in person, well, ON persons. I can make you one-

WAYNE
Don't need it.

VOLPONE (Cont'd.)
You wouldn't have to pay me anything.

Wayne smiles.

WAYNE
Go home, Eric.

VOLPONE
Just trying to share my gift!

Wayne vanishes.

VOLPONE (To self)
Why does he always leave me in a parking lot?

CUT TO:

INT. POLICE CAR, NIGHT

Renegade is now fully conscious in the back of the car. He moves his arms a bit and covered up by the sound of the police radio, Renegade breaks the chain to his handcuffs.

CHAPTER 13

INT. TWILIGHT CITY, WESTWARD POST, ERIC'S OFFICE - DAY

Eric sits at his desk, clearly tired from the previous night. He begins to doze off in his chair when the door slides open and Sydney pokes her head in.

SYDNEY
Eric, Mr. Downey's here to see you.

ERIC
of all the luck! And i was having such a great morning!

Eric grins at Sydney, pausing for laughter, she sends a smile back his way.

SYDNEY
Should I send him in?

ERIC
I guess, I mean, if you want. If you don't you wouldn't get in trouble or anything.

Eli Downey bursts in, holding a video tape.

ELI
You won't believe what we got our hands on!

ERIC
You're right, I don't believe you, in fact, you shouldn't even waste time trying to convince me!

Sydney laughs at the door, Eli looks at her, she silences herself and backs away, closing the door as she exits.

ELI
It's security footage from the break-in at the Blake City Asylum!

Eric suddenly seems shocked, he glares at the tape, then back at Eli.

ERIC
Wh- What exactly is it proof of?

ELI
The supernatural!

ERIC (bewildered)
Supernatural?

MOMENTS LATER:

A TV and VCR have been wheeled into Eric's office, he and Eli watch the footage, it's just footage of an empty hallway. When suddenly Wayne in his white costume suddenly appears in-frame then vanishes in one split second. Eli smiles at this while Eli points repeatedly at the screen.

ELI
Did you see it?

ERIC
No, what are you talking about.

ELI
A ghost! The asylum is haunted! Yesterday some inmate died and drove one of the orderlies insane. He's hiding somewhere in the building. I'll bet you this is the ghost of that inmate!

ERIC
Or a certain someone forgot to take their medication this morning?

ELI
We have to run this!

ERIC
We're not going to run a story about a ghost in an insane asylum. That's a terrible idea.

ELI
Why is it a terrible idea?

ERIC
Well, for one, it's ridiculous. Two, it's stupid. Three, it would make the ghost nuts swarm to the asylum like flies to, well, you in your sleep.

ELI
Why would that be our problem?

ERIC
Because I don't want to be responsible for dozens of camera-toting crazies mingling with a bunch of knife-toting crazies. Now get out of my office and leave the tape.

Eli, speechless, leaves the office. Eric reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone. He dials a number and as soon as he puts it to his ear he begins talking.

ERIC (into phone)

Sydney lets Wayne in, Wayne's wearing a suit and tie. Sydney returns to her desk.

ERIC
Why the suit?

WAYNE
I didn't want to look suspicious or anything.

ERIC
Suspicious of what? Your income?

WAYNE
No. I just thought it would look strange, somebody not dressed like a tool coming into your office.

ERIC
Oh, you're clever, Mr. Lucas.

WAYNE
Guess I've spent too much time with you, Mr. Westward. So what am I looking at?

Eric sets up the VCR. Wayne crosses his arms, waiting.

WAYNE
You can just tell me.

ERIC
If I could I would have.

Eric starts the video, he and Wayne sit on the desk and watch the video.

WAYNE
After all of the news vans rushing to crime scenes and amateurs with camcorders a mounted security camera finally captured The Blur.

ERIC
Not according to the people who have seen it. Your choice of wardrobe has lead them to believe that you're a ghost.

WAYNE
Well, I did have a hole blown in my chest yesterday. It's possible.

ERIC
You did?

Eli bursts in, out of breath from running to Eric's office. He completely ignores Wayne.

ELI
I got another Asylum story!

ERIC
Tupac works in the kitchen!?

WAYNE
Does Bigfoot empty the bedpans?

Eli gives Wayne an "I just met you and I already hate you" look. Then proceeds to tell Eric the story.

ELI
No, the guy they caught last night, the one that broke in, he knocked out the cops and stole the squad car.-

Eric and Wayne both freeze up.

ELI (Cont'd.)
They found the cops hand cuffed around a tree this morning. Both of their noses were broken. The car was abandoned in a field about a mile up the road.

ERIC
... Run it...

Eli leaves, Eric and Wayne exchange a look of terror.
