Yeah, the whole "I'm going" thread thing, again...If a person has formed genuine bonds with a group over time, and say has to go away for one reason or another, cool - it can allow you to clue in the people that you want to that you're leaving, why (if relevant), how long you'll be gone for if it's temporary, and to give the opportunity to leave some contact information...but...for a person who hasn't really contributed or associated with much of the community at all (I mean, I know I wasn't the only one who wondered who the fuck this guy was), it really is just a "please, tell me you want me here" package.
You don't GET that kind of validation online.
